My Pregnant Skin Has Been Terribly Dull - Until I Found This Miracle Worker

Pregnancy is a beautiful miracle, but damn, has it been taking a toll on my skin. Yes, there are ways to avoid acne while pregnant, but my first-trimester breakouts just gave way to dull, oily skin and blackheads due to hormone fluctuations in my second trimester. My lifelong obsession with skincare means approximately nil when I have to throw away my pricey, heavy-duty products in favor of gentle cleansers sans salicylic acid and moisturizers void of retinoids.

I stocked up on a few of my favorite organic skincare products and gave myself weekly facials, but still my skin had the texture of an old nail buff. Where was that pregnant glow I'd heard about from so many people? Even my mother told me I was probably having a boy, because when you're carrying a girl, you look extra beautiful. (Real cool, Mom.)

Then, like magic, an email landed in my inbox. "Safe Skincare Solutions During Pregnancy," the subject line read. It was a message from PMD Beauty about the brand's signature tool: a personal microderm device that was guaranteed to be safe enough for use during any stage of pregnancy. I could not request this product fast enough, y'all.

If you're not familiar with how personal microderm works, it's pretty simple. The handheld device has a plastic head that you press firmly against your skin. At the very top of the head, there's a small spinning disc coated with aluminum oxide crystals, which buffs away your top layer of dead skin. The key is that the tool also provide vacuum suction, so the disc gets as close to your skin as possible, increasing circulation and stimulating new cell growth. (New cells equals smooth, glowing skin.) Once that layer of dull skin is removed, the products you put on your face will be more effective, because you're not wasting them on skin that is dying anyway; those good-for-you ingredients are going straight to the new, clean layer of skin and making it even healthier.

There are a few different versions of the tool, and PMD Beauty sent me the Personal Microderm Pro ($199), which includes two speed settings and a full range of abrasion discs for your face and body. It also comes in nine colors, natch. It boasts a five-star rating from over 90 reviewers (many of whom included superhelpful photos) on the official website, while the Classic ($159) received a solid four stars on Amazon. It features fewer bells and whistles, but it'll get the job done.

The first time I used Personal Microderm was a bit jarring; it's not like any product I've used on my face before. The vacuum suction is real, and it took practice to be able to move it in smooth strokes across my face. As gross as it may sound, it felt extremely rewarding to see flakes of dead skin rolling off my cheeks as the discs exfoliated that top layer. It's a quick process, as you just want to go over each part of your face once in a swift upward motion. (Do not overdo it - you will end up with a tomato-red face.)

I added the Personal Microderm treatment to my weekly facial routine, and within a month I saw an improvement in the overall tone of my skin. My face was softer, I had fewer small acneic bumps around my chin, and my serums and moisturizers were noticeably soaking into my skin faster. I felt better about the gentle, organic products that I was using, because I knew the ingredients were penetrating below the surface and working beautiful skincare magic. While my skin isn't quite up to prepregnancy status, it might be good enough to trick my mom into thinking it's a girl.

Here's Why Divorce Just Isn't an Option For Us

A little over 11 years ago, my husband and I stood together in a room full of our family and friends - and a few random, obscure cousins no one had ever mentioned until it was time to mail out wedding invitations - and promised to love each other in good times and in bad. I meant those words when I said them that day, but the truth is I didn't really understand their true implication. We were just kids who fell in love and thought the security marriage offered seemed like a pretty solid way to go. But we also respected the institution and wouldn't have bothered getting hitched if we weren't planning on staying together. And even though we were young enough to stay out drinking all night, then go to work the next day without feeling even remotely hungover, my husband and I believed then that marriage was a lifelong commitment and that divorce wasn't really an option.

I know now how naive I was when I repeated my vows that day. Because I distinctly remember looking at our pastor and thinking, "How bad could times get?" Oh, if only I could go back and tell that dewy-skinned bride she would come to know very bad times. I'd tap my dapper new hubby's shoulder and gently whisper in his ear how our fairly naive sense of what fidelity meant would be more than tested. But the wiser, more-hardened-by-life me would also want that beaming, wide-eyed couple to know they'd get through the toughest of times, grow to appreciate their dedication to each other, and respect the sanctity of marriage more than they ever thought possible.

That may sound all glossy and pretty, but know that the word "divorce" has been uttered in our home many times. I whimpered it from the floor of our foyer, where I lay, deeply depressed, after losing a baby late in pregnancy. "How can we stay together when our lives have fallen so spectacularly to pieces?" I wondered, my grief so raw and out in the open, while his was hidden behind a strong exterior as he carried on with his life as if nothing had happened. The word "divorce" was paraded about again during the many months we spent apart due to career obligations. I figured, why keep trying so damn hard to keep our marriage alive if the universe was so intent on forcing us to be apart? There have been other tough times; we were eaten alive by the bad housing market, and we've fought bitterly over in-laws, finances, and, ironically, how we fight so differently from each other. We've been dug down deep in the trenches of raising four kids, working opposite schedules, and subsisting on no sleep, leftovers, and hope things would get just a tad easier.

Here's the beauty of surviving really awful, brutal, miserable, sometimes heartbreaking bad times: you realize that if you were going to split up, you would have done it already.

But here's the beauty of surviving really awful, brutal, miserable, sometimes heartbreaking bad times: you realize that if you were going to split up, you would have done it already. That if you managed to weather all that sh*t - and you've said the worst things to each other, you've thrown the "d" word out, you've cried and driven away, flown away, slept on the sofa, at a hotel, literally been sure you hated the other person for even being born - well, from there, you can exhale. And accept that the two of you are in this - really, truly, 100 percent in it. That there's no splitting up; there's only sticking together through it all. At this point, what we've built is so strong, the bad times don't have a chance to topple our foundation. I'll stop short at saying we laugh in the face of bad times, but you get my point.

It's hard to imagine that something else could happen in the future for us to even consider ending our marriage. Of course, before any of that other stuff happened, it was hard to imagine, too. Unfortunately, you just never know where life will take you, but that's something you're promising to deal with together when you say "I do." So, I'm sure in another decade, I'll be reflecting on the challenges my husband and I have faced. As I contemplate the many highs and lows we will have undoubtedly experienced, I can only hope he is right there by my side. And that we are as devoted to this union then as we are today. And that we have even more reverence for the vows we spoke to each other on our wedding day, all those years ago.

Joe Will Face Off Against Haunting of Hill House's Victoria Pedretti in Season 2 of You

Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House is one of those great shows that one half of you wants to go on forever, while the other, smarter half knows that it's best to let it end in peace. Despite the fact that a second season of the horror-drama is unlikely, we don't have to say goodbye to seeing the Crane family alive and well on the streaming giant (well, technically) - Victoria Pedretti, who plays Nell Crane, has just been cast in the second season of You.

After the show experienced a surge in popularity after switching from Lifetime to Netflix, fans of You have been desperate to find out what deranged serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is going to get up to next. So far we've heard that the show is moving from being set in New York City to Los Angeles, where Candace presumably runs off to after confronting Joe inside Mooney's at the end of season one and filling him in on the fact that - Surprise! - he didn't succeed in murdering her after all. Or, at least, it seems that way. Joe has been known to hallucinate quite a bit, so we won't be sure until the show returns.

Now, Netflix has confirmed through its See What's Next Twitter account that Pedretti will play a key character named Love Quinn (yes, LOVE QUINN) in season two: "Haunting of Hill House breakout Victoria Pedretti landed the female lead in @YouNetflix Season 2. She plays Love Quinn, an aspiring chef who doesn't care about social media. She's also tending to a deep grief - so when she meets Joe, she senses a shared knowledge of profound loss."

Based on that one tweet we already have a ton of questions. What "profound loss" has she experienced? How will Joe stalk her every move if she doesn't have social media? Is he really and truly over Beck? Will we ever figure out which You writer is responsible for coming up with the name "Love Quinn"?!?

A premiere date for the second season has yet to be nailed down, but we can likely expect plenty more stomach-twisting antics from Badgley's Joe (and Love!) come 2019. In the meantime, hopefully Netflix continues to churn out cheeky jokes about the news:

Michelle Pfeiffer Teases a Positively Regal Look at Her Maleficent 2 Character

Image Source: Getty / Christopher Polk

The new queen is here, and she's bad as hell.

Michelle Pfeiffer shared a look at her character from the upcoming sequel to Maleficent on Instagram on Jan. 29, which serves as the official first glimpse of Queen Ingrith (even though it only shows half of her face). In the photo, Pfeiffer wears a silver outfit and has her curly hair tied back with tiny pearls. She also has a multiple-strand pearl hairpiece hanging from two brooches clipped beside her ears. "A little tease of Queen Ingrith," the actress captioned the photo, adding the hashtag for Maleficent 2.

According to earlier reports, Queen Ingrith is the mother of Prince Phillip, who falls in love with Elle Fanning's Aurora in the first film. We're not sure if this queen will be friend or foe to Aurora and Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, but there's no doubt Pfeiffer will crush the role either way.

It's been almost five years since we were dazzled by Maleficent's tale of chosen families, and we're more than ready for the sequel. We won't be getting Maleficent 2 anytime this year (the film's release date was pushed back to May 29, 2020), but the cast has dropped enough sneak peeks to get us excited! While the first installment ends with Aurora and Maleficent ruling over their respective kingdoms, the second film will find Maleficent and Aurora facing new adversaries in their battle to protect the magical creatures living in the moors.

Will Pfeiffer's Queen Ingrith be one of those standing in their way? We all know Disney loves an evil queen, and frankly, so do we. But it would also be awesome to see the three women come together to lock horns and take down whatever nasties try to mess with them. We'll have to wait until May 2020 to see how it all goes down, but we can't wait to see how Queen Ingrith's story plays out!

Fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Say Goodbye to the Queen of Emojis, Gina Linetti

Thursday night's Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode said farewell to an iconic character in the most fitting of ways: Gina Lintetti bids everyone adieu with an interpretive dance to embody four aspects of her personality. Just kidding - though she does try to. The episode is actually divided into four movements (which also serves as the episode title), in which Gina's relationship with members of the Nine-Nine are highlighted and she bestows them with a special "Gina Moment."

The first movement is between Captain Holt and Gina, playing what the episode describes as a "high-stakes game of chess." In reality, it's a glimpse into the sweet relationship between them as the two turn their chess match into a life lesson. Holt's understated, yet clearly emotional, concern for Gina is plain to see, and it's a perfect way to drive home how close the two have gotten over the years. Though the movement ends with Holt coming to accept Gina's plans to quit the Nine-Nine, he finds it much harder to accept when she "wins" by way of having "done reinvented the game."

The second movement is between Gina, Rosa, and Amy. After Amy gifts Gina with a book comprised of all her tweets (callback to season three!), her Gina Moment is about Amy learning how to just be herself instead of trying to be "cool" like Rosa. It's a special scene between the three women, as their dynamic has always been fun to watch. Who doesn't love seeing three very different women who are all badass in their own right be best friends?

Movement three brings us back to Jake and Gina's friendship, which is basically two close friends who enable one another to be utterly ridiculous. Their Gina Moment comes after Gina rejects guest star Mario Lopez in the name of proving to Jake that the Nine-Nine are "all the splash" she needs.

The final movement is perhaps the most Gina Linetti of all. Gina orders a gold statue in her likeness to be delivered to the Nine-Nine and leaves a video to make sure everyone knows that she's always going to be there for them. She even pauses to give them time to applaud her, which prompts Jake to say, "This feels right." And it totally does! The entire episode is a seamless story that gets us from point A to point B - which is to be emotionally devastated by Chelsea Peretti's departure but satisfied that Gina goes out in the best way possible.

Fans of the iconic character said goodbye the best way they know how - by getting a customized hashtag trending during the night of broadcast. The #ThankYouChelsea tag on Twitter is full of heartfelt notes from fans letting the actress know that "the human form of the 100 emoji" will never be forgotten. Check out some of the sweetest tweets we've rounded up below!

Andy King's Response to All Those Fyre Festival Memes Is Nothing Short of Legendary

By now you've hopefully gobbled up every scrap of footage from Fyre Festival, replayed both Hulu's and Netflix's documentaries about the disaster, and laughed at all the memes. (And if you haven't, oh boy - you have a big obsession headed your way.)

The "greatest party that never was," orchestrated by "entrepreneur" and serial fraudster Billy McFarland, who's now in prison for his part in it, left many members of the Bahamian island of Great Exuma unpaid for hours of labor and, in some cases, out of thousands of dollars of their own savings. As disastrous and heartbreaking as some aspects of Netflix's documentary on the subject, Fyre Fraud, are, there's one hilarious, shocking, and disturbing highlight in the form of an anecdote told by event planner Andy King.

During the documentary, King appears in front of the screen to discuss a snafu involving the festival's water supply. As if things couldn't get worse for the event, "four 18-wheeler trucks filled with Evian water" ended up stuck at customs, and McFarland asked King, a gay man, to recover the water by bribing the head of customs of the Bahamas with . . . a blow job. Fortunately, King didn't have to go through with it, and the dedicated leader was able to get the water back without having to perform oral sex. Naturally, his shocking account has fascinated the internet, to the point where Netflix sat down with King yet again to see what his response has been to the countless memes created about his experience.

"I don't necessarily wanna be known as the Blow Job King of the World," he jokes to the camera. "But I'm blown away by the response to the documentary. Completely blown away. I'm now a noun, a verb, an adjective."

King goes on to discuss the wonderful GoFundMe created to raise funds for Exuma restaurant owner Maryann Rolle, and he also pronounces memes as "me-mes," which alone makes the video worth watching. Check it out ahead, then keep reading to see more of the memes that have made King the unofficial ambassador of Evian water.

1 Mom's Open and Honest Letter to Her Daughter's Speech Therapist Will Make You Teary

As a writer and mother of two, Mia Carella knows the importance of communication. So when she realized her 3-year-old daughter needed to see a speech therapist, she didn't hesitate to make an appointment. Now, four years later, Mia is thanking her little girl's speech therapist - whom she calls Miss Mel - in a heartwarming Facebook post.

"You met my daughter, a little pixie of a girl, almost four years ago," wrote Mia. "She had round cheeks and two tiny, wispy pigtails that you tell me you remember like it was yesterday. Although my little girl had recently turned three years old, she had less than 25 words in her vocabulary when you met."

Mia explained that parents may underestimate the bond between a child and their speech therapist.

"You and my daughter clicked almost instantly and began building the foundation for the unbreakable bond the two of you would go on to form. Your kind and loving nature put my timid little girl at ease," she said. "I knew from the very beginning that you were the right person for the job of helping her learn to communicate with the world."

"I knew from the very beginning that you were the right person for the job of helping her learn to communicate with the world."

And correcting a child's way of speaking is no small feat. It often takes years of hard work to see significant change. "As the weeks, months and years went on, you continued to work with my daughter," she said. "Your genuine care for her influenced your work, as it does with all your clients. You always wanted her to succeed and I just knew it. I could tell by the way you talked to me about her that you believed in her. When others doubted her potential, you advocated. You stood up for her. You said to give her a chance. You don't know what that means to me as her mother."

For Mia - whose daughter has special needs - having another person in her child's corner can make a world of difference.

"As special needs parents we are often put in the position of feeling like it's 'Us' against 'Them,'" explained Mia. "Like we have to fight for the services our children are entitled to, fight to prove what they are capable of, fight to be heard. With you I've never felt the need to fight because I have always known in my heart that we are on the same team. From Day One we always have been."

And as for the progress her little girl has made? It's in the category of leaps and bounds.

"My daughter, now almost seven years old, would be unrecognizable by her speech and language skills compared to the toddler she was when you met her," she said. "The girl who then struggled to put two words together now speaks in paragraphs with just a little bit of pre-tween sass thrown in. She can talk. Oh, how she can talk! And, while she still has a lot of work to do with speech and language development, you are helping her close the gap between her and her peers."

She signed off by acknowledging how much her daughter's relationship with her speech therapist means to her family. "I cannot thank you enough for your dedication to my child. Not only have you given my daughter the gift of communication, you have given our whole family the gift of support, understanding and encouragement," wrote Mia. "This has meant more to us than you will ever know. Truly."

Ellen Page Calls Out Mike Pence's Hateful Leadership: "This Needs to F*cking Stop"

Ellen Page initially sat down on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss her upcoming Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, but the conversation quickly veered into more serious topics. Clearly emotional and "fired up," as she herself admitted, Page ripped Vice President Mike Pence's hateful leadership and harmful views of the LGBTQ+ community a new one.

"It feels impossible to not feel [fired up] right now, with the president and the vice president, Mike Pence, who wishes I couldn't be married," she incredulously told Colbert, as the host pulled out a photo of Page with her wife, Emma Portner. "Let's just be clear: the vice president of America wishes I didn't have the love with my wife. He wanted to ban that in Indiana. He believes in conversion therapy. He has hurt LGBTQ people so badly as the governor of Indiana."

The actress, who came out publicly in 2014, then mentioned the recent, horrific beating of Empire actor Jussie Smollett in Chicago, a hate crime, and how it's a direct result of the president and vice president's homophobic, anti-gay rhetoric:

"Connect the dots. This is what happens. If you are in a position of power and you hate people, and you want to cause suffering for them, you go through the trouble, you spend your career trying to cause suffering, what do you think is going to happen? Kids are going to be abused, and they're going to kill themselves. And people are going to be beaten in the street. I have traveled the world and I have met the most marginalized people you can meet. I am lucky to have this time and this privilege to say this: this needs to f*cking stop."

Make sure you watch Page's powerful interview in full, above.

Hobbs and Shaw: Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Face Off Against a Superhuman Idris Elba

After a few badass teasers were shared on Instagram, the first trailer for Hobbs and Shaw has arrived. And, yes, we're already obsessed.

After seeing a deluge of approximately one trillion behind-the-scenes photos, some official portraits, and drooling over every casting announcement, this is our first glimpse of footage from the Fast and Furious spinoff. Luckily, it seems to have the same fun, action-heavy tone as the original franchise, only this time around, with the introduction of a superhuman villain played by Idris Elba.

Johnson stars as the titular Hobbs, a hard-ass US diplomatic security agent, alongside Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw, a former villain with a heart of gold. Together with Shaw's sister, rogue MI6 agent Hattie (The Crown's Vanessa Kirby), they're tasked with putting all their smack talk and fist fights aside so they can take down a cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist, Brixton (Elba), who's gained control of a bio-threat that could wipe out the world as we know it.

In Furious 7, the opposites-attract chemistry between the two characters was practically begging for a spinoff, so we can't wait to see how they make do without the help of Dom Toretto's (Vin Diesel) family of vehicle-savvy criminals in the David Leitch-directed film. Hopefully we'll get plenty more looks at the movie before the action-slash-buddy-comedy revs into theaters on July 26, 2019, but in the meantime, you can check out the rest of the short teasers for the movie's other characters, ahead!

Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs

Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw

Idris Elba as Brixton

Vanessa Kirby as Hattie

Big Fan of the Puppy Bowl? Here's What You Probably Didn't Know

If you're utterly obsessed with dogs, then there's no doubt you're a loyal viewer of Animal Planet's annual Puppy Bowl. Not so familiar with the event? It's exactly what it sounds like: a televised program where doggos split into teams by size (so big dogs vs. big dogs, etc.) and "play" each other on a mini football field for all to watch. As someone who got to go behind the scenes of the taping a few weeks back, let me attest that the pups are even cuter in real life.

There are literally dozens of pups playing everywhere! In its 15th year, Puppy Bowl XV is set to air on Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. ET and 12 p.m. PT. Think you know everything there is to know about this positively adorable tradition? Scroll through to learn a new factoid or two.

Meghan Markle's $120 Gemstone Earrings Are Holding Me Spellbound

When Meghan Markle visited the Association of Commonwealth Universities in London, you might have first noticed her black Givenchy coat (a repeat from 2018's Remembrance Day ceremony) or the pleated chiffon dress underneath it. But I was instantly infatuated with her earrings. They were small, yes, but the glistening gemstones caught my eye right off the bat.

Meghan's known to wear delicate pieces when she's not displaying one of Princess Diana's immaculate treasures, and these Dean Davidson Mini Knockout Studs ($122) fit her aesthetic. The semiprecious white jewels are set in 22 karat gold and they come in Rainbow Moonstone and Labradorite colors, too.

Meghan's stylist, Jessica Mulroney, follows the Canadian brand on Instagram, so it was only a matter of time before she plucked special baubles for Meghan's wardrobe. Once you get a good look at these stunners, I have a feeling you'll be right where I am: holding your credit card in one hand and typing the expiration date with the other.

Valentine's Day Is "Coming Prematurely" Thanks to Netflix's Big Mouth Special

Can you imagine a better holiday for Big Mouth to explore than Valentine's Day? With all the hormones and candy hearts flying in every which way, we can already guess that Andrew (John Mulaney), Nick (Nick Kroll), Jessi (Jessi Klein), and Missy (Jenny Slate) would be a little crazier than usual. Fortunately, Netflix is blessing us with a special in honor of the lovey-dovey holiday, titled "My Furry Valentine."

The trailer for the new episode of the coming-of-age comedy is unsurprisingly hilarious, with Andrew deciding to rock a questionable hat in his ongoing quest to win over Missy, while Nick seems to be out at a romantic dinner along with his parents (Cringe City, population: him). It also looks like we'll get a musical number of some kind and a sassy one-liner from Matthew (Andrew Rannells) about Topman that is already the best line from the show thus far.

Watch the tease for the special episode above, and keep an eye out for "My Furry Valentine" when it "comes prematurely" to Netflix on Feb. 8.

Can You Guess Which Random John Mayer Song Is Being Turned Into a TV Show by ABC?

If a TV network asked you to base a new series on one of John Mayer's songs, which would you pick?

Maybe "Your Body Is a Wonderland" could be turned into a rom-com? "Say" could be about a young progressive politician navigating her new role in DC? (Wink, wink.) Even "Daughters" seems rife with familial drama. But in what might be today's most unexpected piece of entertainment news, ABC has decided to base a new series on a track off Mayer's Continuum: "The Heart of Life."

The song from the Grammy winner's third studio album (while catchy, in my very humble opinion) was never even released as a single, and Mayer didn't bother to make a music video for it. Still, the network has clearly been inspired by its emotional lyrics - "Pain throws your heart to the ground / Love turns the whole thing around / Fear is a friend who's misunderstood" - and has already ordered a pilot based on the song, which will reportedly follow two siblings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rough plot is as follows:

"Heart of Life follows two sets of adult siblings from wildly different worlds who discover they are related and must reassess everything they thought they knew about their shared father. As they explore the mystery of their separate childhoods, they'll experience the difficulty in overcoming the sins of the past, and learn the joys of reuniting with long-lost family."

What's interesting is that the lyrics themselves don't really seem to tell a concrete story. Rather, they're a more general reflection on resilience during difficult times and the ties that bond us. Fortunately, there's a good team behind the show: Ben Queen (NBC's Powerless) will write the script and executive-produce with Mayer, Melvin Mar (Jumanji), Jake Kasdan (Bless This Mess), and Paul Weitz (Mozart in the Jungle).

Until we find out more about the show's specifics (like who will play those siblings, for instance), feel free to pick apart the lyrics to "Heart of Life" below.

I hate to see you cry
Laying there in that position
There's things you need to hear
So turn off your tears and listen
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
You know it's nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
But then the circle of your friends
Will defend the silver lining
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
Fear is a friend who's misunderstood
But I know the heart of life is good
I know it's good.

Penn Badgley Is STILL on a Mission to Stop Fans From Thirsting Over Joe in You

Ever since You got picked up by Netflix, the conversation surrounding the TV show has gone positively viral. Not only are Netflix subscribers devouring the short 10-episode first season, but they're bringing all of their thoughts to social media. (It's a bit funny given the context, right?) As such, we have a veritable flash flood of tweets about how creepy the show is, why it's hard to pity Beck, and even why Peach is an entire mood for 2019. But there's one part of this whole discourse that has caused some light ripples of concern: many people are thirsting after Joe.

Look, I get it, it's all just fun. Twitter has become a space to hyperbolize yourself and say edgy things (within reason), so saying Joe Goldberg is "bae" because of all the murdery things he does for Beck? I'd say it's par for the course. But for Penn Badgley, the man playing the monster, it's all kinds of problematic. I guess it tracks: even before the show blew up, he confessed how much he hated Joe and said he had a hard time getting into character. Badgley started responding to tweets that romanticized and humanized Joe (regardless of how serious said tweet-writer was). Eventually, his cries of concern blossomed into a full-tilt New York Times interview. Not only did You go viral on Netflix, but so too did Badgley as he attempted to shed light on Joe's monstrous core.

It turns out, Badgley is so dedicated to defaming Joe and undoing the toxic heart-eyes behavior surrounding his actions, he's been sliding into fans' DMs in hopes that he could state his case. "What I ended up doing after a few of those tweets went viral was follow some of the users I quote-tweeted, and DMed them just to check in," Badgley told the NYT. "So I actually had a lengthy conversation over DMs with one woman, and she correctly pointed out that I had sort of misinterpreted what she said. She was talking about why she was so charmed by me, the actor, rather than by the character."

But even Badgley's intentions had a downside: his decision to reply to this woman in particular made her a prime target for trolling. "What I just didn't anticipate was that so many people would look at her as a 'problematic fan.' People definitely were trolling her," he said. "And in fact, there was a person who did say in typical troll fashion, 'maybe we should send real murderers to your house to make sure you know the difference.' That's chilling, and that is exactly what Joe is, so it dovetails too perfectly, because we can't get away from Joe. I think what he's meant to be is an embodiment and a portrait of the parts of us that can't escape rooting for Joe."

At the end of the day, though, Badgley didn't cop to any sort of regret for his own viral status. "I wouldn't say I regret it, [but] all of this nuance is lost on social media, which I have to learn again and again." That circles back to my point: Twitter is often a landing space for funny quips, and not always a platform for in-depth discussions. It'll be interesting to see how the conversation will evolve in season two, if it evolves at all!

All the Ways Princess Margaret's 21st Birthday Was a Royally Fabulous Affair

Long before Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle became the center of royal attention, the queen's sister Princess Margaret captivated the public and garnered her fair share of headlines. Although she was often known as the scandalous party princess - in contrast to her always-proper sister - Princess Margaret was still a beloved royal and an icon for a generation of girls. It seems only natural, then, that when the princess came of age in 1951, her 21st birthday party would be one to remember. Now that her prized birthday gown is on display in London, we're revisiting the details of the momentous occasion.

The centerpiece of the party, was, of course, what the princess was wearing, and Princess Margaret certainly did not disappoint. She selected a gown by French designer Christian Dior, made of creamy organza silk, featuring an off-the-shoulder cut and a massive, full skirt, and covered in detailed embroidery, sequins, and mother-of-pearl. While her sister, the future Queen Elizabeth, had to be seen to be loyal only to British designers, Princess Margaret had more fashion options, and she took full advantage of that to utilize the talents of the top names in couture. In fact, she apparently loved this Dior gown so much that she wore it for multiple events.

"I imagine she had a very fun time in that dress," Museum of London assistant curator Connie Karol Burks told People at a preview of the exhibition that includes the gown. "It was one of her favorite dresses and she wore it more than once – there are photographs of her wearing it in Paris at an event later that year."

The princess's party had one shadow lingering over it: the worsening health of her father, King George VI. By the time Princess Margaret turned 21 in 1951, the king's many health issues - made worse by the stress of World War II and his heavy smoking habit - were piling up. Only a month after this party, in fact, he would undergo surgery to remove part of his left lung after cancer was found, and the princess would assist the rest of her family in picking up some of his duties. Her 21st would be the last birthday she spent with her father; he died in February 1952.

For the venue, the family chose the royals' Scottish estate of Balmoral. According to the castle's website, it entered royal possession in 1852, when Prince Albert bought the property for his wife, Queen Victoria, since the couple loved their visits to the Scottish Highlands so much. The castle that stands there today is not, in fact, the original one: Albert and Victoria decided the existing castle was too small for their sprawling family, so they built a new castle on the grounds, which was completed in 1856. Since then, the royals have kept the estate as a favorite getaway. The Queen spends every summer there, according to Town and Country, and it is reportedly her favorite of the many royal residences.

Princess Margaret's 21st birthday was indeed memorable, both as one of the last celebrations the family enjoyed together and as an official introduction of the princess into society as an adult. Although her style definitely evolved over the years, her Dior gown remains a symbol of the young princess and the glamour of the royal family of the era.

Taraji P. Henson Isn't Taking a Penny Less Than She Deserves: "Honey, a Zero Is Missing"

The gender pay gap is excruciatingly unfair to women of color, and it's an unfortunate hurdle that affects even those at the top of their professions, including women in Hollywood. Taraji P. Henson - who has been in the game for over two decades - knows the struggle well and opened up about her experiences with pay negotiations in Net-a-Porter's digital magazine, The Edit. The Empire star's quotes about salary negotiations and no longer accepting less than her worth have vision-board potential. Seriously, they're that real.

"'Honey, a zero is missing. Tell them to go find it then call me back.'"

Of the pay discrepancy she faced while working on 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Taraji was paid just $500,000 for her role, while costars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett reportedly made tens of millions - Taraji talked about having to "bite that bullet" and use it as a reminder never to settle for less again. "I didn't even ask for one million. But I had to see the bigger picture and bite that bullet," she said. "I knew that if I kept my ego in check I would get the victory. That performance was undeniable. I turned in an Academy-worthy f*cking performance. And what did they say? 'We shoulda paid her.'" Taraji's performance as Queenie earned her an Oscar nomination, as well as the respect of her peers and critics.

Since then, Taraji has remained outspoken about the gender pay gap, and when it comes to her work, she isn't taking a penny less than what she deserves. "'They wanna pay what?'" she said of less-than-ideal studio offers. "'Honey, a zero is missing. Tell them to go find it then call me back.' If you come to Taraji P. Henson, you need to come with that money, because I earned it." Ayyye.

How many of us needed this reminder to stand up for ourselves and demand what we deserve? Women of color are often expected to work hard and accept whatever we get. We can shy away from asking for more for fear of seeming "angry" or "difficult," which makes it increasingly hard to remember our worth. But as more and more women of color are rising to positions of power, it's imperative that we don't shrink; that we continue to speak out and speak up for ourselves and others whose worth is not represented in their pay. In Taraji's words, let's tell them to "go find it," then call us back.

This Is Why You Recognize That Song in The Umbrella Academy Trailer

There have been so many supernatural and superhero stories in pop culture lately, it's sometimes hard to keep up. But one new tale is getting some serious attention online - and not just because of the story.

The trailer for Netflix's upcoming series The Umbrella Academy dropped recently, and it's intriguing enough on its own. Its premise is the eerie stuff that sci-fi series are made of: 43 children are suddenly born to women who weren't even pregnant, and six of them, with supernatural abilities, are raised by a billionaire and eventually reunite to prevent the apocalypse that one of them glimpsed on an accidental time-travel trip. This high-concept series is enough to get people buzzing, but the punk-rock song that scores the trailer has caught plenty of attention itself.

The song that has everyone talking is the moody "A Hazy Shade of Winter." Originally recorded by Simon & Garfunkel, the 1966 song, written by Paul Simon, has been covered by other artists over the years - most famously, The Bangles covered it in 1987, ramping up the song's rock edge and altering its structure slightly. It's this version of the song that inspired Gerard Way, whose cover can be heard in the trailer for The Umbrella Academy.

It's fitting that Way would be the one doing the music for the trailer. After all, The Umbrella Academy is based on a comic book series that the My Chemical Romance singer cowrote with illustrator Gabriel Bá. Way's punk-emo cover of "A Hazy Shade of Winter" also features a few of his former bandmates: Ray Toro is credited as the guitarist and bassist, while Jarrod Alexander can be heard on the drums. You can listen to the song in The Umbrella Academy's trailer above!

16 Black Cosplay Queens Who Will Give You Inspiration For Comic-Con and Beyond

The best part of being in any fandom is seeing how your favorite books, movies, and TV shows spark the creativity of the fans that love them. There are some truly creative souls out there who can take inspiration from anything and put their own unique spin on it to show their appreciation of it. I love seeing cosplayers put their creative skills to use by crafting their own versions of iconic costumes - whether they be a warrior princess, your favorite witches and wizards, or the legendary Toadette. As a black nerd, I especially love seeing cosplayers of color who challenge the idea of who participates in cosplay and what they can do.

It's a popular myth that the "nerdier" aspects of fandom - like cosplaying and LARPing - are male-dominated and reserved for non-black fans. But that's never been true and, in the age of social media, it's been hugely debunked by the large presence of black female fans who finally get a chance to show off their love for all things nerd and cosplay to the world wide web. Now, I'm not personally a cosplayer (there is not a creative bone in my body, sorry not sorry), but I am more than happy to share these 16 cosplay queens everyone should be following on Instagram.

14-Year-Old Marsai Martin Is Set to Become the Youngest Executive Producer in History

Black-ish star Marsai Martin is about to make history. The 14-year-old actress is gearing up to be the youngest executive producer of a major Hollywood movie in history. You read that right. She's 14, and she's out here making movies (and starring in them). Whew. She'll bear the title when her film Little, starring Insecure's Issa Rae and Girls Trip's Regina Hall, hits theaters this Spring.

The movie centers around a woman named Jordan Sanders (Hall), whose callous behavior causes her to become cursed by a little girl. Jordan then turns back into her 13-year-old self (Martin), who must relive her childhood. In an interview with The Root, Martin confirmed that the movie is inspired by Tom Hank's 1988 classic Big. "It was one of my most favorite films growing up," she said. "After the [season one] finale of Black-ish, we told Kenya Barris about it, and he called Will [Packer] and said: 'Yo, you know the girl who plays Diane on Black-ish? She has this dope idea!'"

Martin tweeted about her excitement for fans to see the film after the trailer dropped in January. "So happy to finally be able to share the trailer, so proud of the things accomplished since we started this and eternally grateful to you guys for listening when others didn't take us seriously," she wrote.

I wonder what those people who didn't take her seriously were doing at 14 years old. Certainly not producing Hollywood films, that's for sure. Watch the trailer for Little before it hits theaters on April 12!

If you are looking for some inspiration to throw a spectacular Galentine's Day party, then look no further than this amazing Galentine's Day-themed photo shoot.

This party shoot is awash in an array of pink-toned colors and features food and travel bloggers from Austin, TX. "The color palettes for this theme was: blush pink, cream, and neutrals with accents of coral and rose gold," said photographer Gina Park, who orchestrated this shoot. "I wanted the celebration to have a bohemian lounge feel to the morning that would allow for an easy transition from sips and treats to painting. The painting elements were played throughout the decor, from the hand-printed invites, signage, and table runner, to the mini easels with the individual names of each blogger that replaced traditional place cards."

The shoot took place at the Prospect House, which provided the team with a lovely, bright, open-concept space filled with natural lighting. The desserts and sweet treats were provided by a local bakery and the highlight was a strawberry-and-vanilla cake with pink frosted flowers. My Best Friend Broke Up With Me and I'm Still Not Over It

Breaking up is hard to do, just like the old Neil Sedaka song says. But as painful as my breakups with former lovers were, they pale in comparison to the sorrow I feel over losing my best friend.

I first met my bestie - let's call her Kim - in second grade. I still remember watching the moving van pull up to the little blue house across the street that had sported a "for sale" sign for the longest time. My older brother and sister both had friends in the neighborhood, but no one under the age of 12 lived within walking distance. I prayed that the new family would bring me a friend, and literally started dancing when I spied a little girl emerge from the van.

I begged my mom to let me go over and introduce myself, but she made me wait until the next day, so the newcomers had a chance to get settled. When my mom and I finally headed over with a casserole, Kim and I hit it off.

We shared many years of happiness throughout elementary, middle, and high school, and after college graduation, we reunited and shared the same apartment for a year. Everything came crashing down when her boyfriend - we'll call him Matt - entered Kim's life, changing and eventually ending our near-lifelong friendship.

Something seemed off. What my bestie saw in him, I'll likely never understand.

Matt played football back in high school, and from what I could tell, often started his day with a can of beer. He believed internet conspiracy theories he saw on social media and spoke at length about the race of reptilian aliens he believed were dwelling in the tunnels under our airport. Matt couldn't hold down steady employment, because he kept getting fired for drinking on the job. Something seemed off. What my bestie Kim saw in Matt, I'll likely never understand.

Their relationship seemed unhealthy from the beginning. Matt didn't want Kim going to our regular Zumba class after work because the other men in the gym might ogle her. He wouldn't let Kim go out for drinks unless he was invited, too - and as no one in our group of friends really liked to spend time with him, that led to her staying home and missing out most of the time. He constantly accused Kim of cheating on him, insisting she said things she never had, denying her version of events and making her doubt her own perceptions. Little by little, Kim caved to Matt's increasingly ridiculous demands to avoid accusations of infidelity. The proverbial sh*t finally hit the fan when he insisted she move out of our shared apartment so they could move in together.

I begged Kim not to rush into cohabiting. I reminded her that just a week ago, Matt complained about his inability to come up with rent money. I pleaded with her, telling her over and over again that if he truly loved her the way he claimed to, he'd respect her desire to wait a bit longer before moving in together. But she didn't want to listen, and she finally exploded, insisting that I either accept the fact that she wanted to spend her life with him or get out of her life entirely.

A lot of angry words were exchanged, and I probably said things about her boyfriend that I shouldn't have

A lot of angry words were exchanged, and I probably said things about her boyfriend that I shouldn't have. She grabbed her recently-packed suitcases and stormed out of our apartment. Two days later, Matt showed up at my door to collect her books and other items she'd left behind. Kim sat outside in his pickup truck the whole time, refusing to talk things out.

Losing my best friend felt terrible. Having been through a relationship like hers, I recognized the warning signs of emotional abuse. I still wondered if I did the right thing by speaking up or if I should have blindly supported her decisions. It's not like I ever asked her to choose between the two of us, but I suppose she couldn't stomach the fact that I didn't like the man she wanted to be with.

Since the night she left, Kim has unfriended me on social media. She texted me once to tell me to leave her alone, and that was it. I don't know if Kim still refuses to take my calls out of anger or if Matt imposed another rule on her to ignore my attempts to contact her. Not knowing how she is keeps me awake at night. I want to make sure she's safe and loved.

Friends in our group have told me they've seen her here and there and she seems okay, but remorse over what I could have done to save our friendship fills my days, and anxiety over what kind of life Kim has now leaves me staring at the clock in the middle of the night. I hope she knows I'm here if she needs me, and that I will continue to check in on her from afar even if she doesn't want to see me.

If a genie suddenly popped out of a bottle, I wouldn't even ask for all three wishes, just one: to have my best friend back.

Criticisms of the Women Running For President in 2020 Are Fair - but at What Cost?

You don't have to be a political scientist to see there's something unique about the field of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates: three major candidates - and arguably the most viable and influential people who have announced campaigns so far - are women.

The first US senators to announce their presidential bids are Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Kamala Harris - all Democratic women. (Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has also announced a run, but her past opposition to gay rights has disqualified her among most Democratic voters. Recent reports say the Gabbard campaign is already in peril.)
