Oat Em Gee! These Oat Milk Ice Creams Look Like a Dairy-Free Dream Come True

I grew up on jumbo-sized ice cream sundaes, with emphasis on the extra scoops. So when lactose intolerance hit me in high school, I stubbornly tried to power through - much to the dismay of my stomach and sanity. As an adult, I'm a little more responsible and try to pick up dairy-free options when I'm in need of a sweet treat.

There's no shortage of selections when I walk down the freezer aisle; avocado, coconut milk, and almond milk are just a few bases to choose from. To my delight, the game is about to change once more with the addition of So Delicious's oat milk ice cream - following right in line with one of 2019's biggest trends.

As spotted by Refinery 29, the healthy ingredient taking over grocery store shelves and my Instagram feed hit the ice cream freezers of retailers like Whole Foods last month in three vegan and gluten-free flavors: Peanut Butter and Raspberry, Oatmeal Cookie, and Caramel Apple Crumble. If these tickle your dairy-free fancy, add a pint (or three!) to your cart on the next shopping trip.

Get the full run-down on the flavors below.

Princess Eugenie Has a Job Way More Important Than Simply Being a Royal

She may be the wife of Jack Brooksbank now, but if you think that is Princess Eugenie's only job, then you've totally underestimated her. Unlike her cousins Prince William and Prince Henry, Eugenie and her older sister, Beatrice, are not 'working royals,' which means that, even though her schedule is free from all of those royal events and obligations, she isn't eligible to receive the Sovereign Grant, a tax-funded salary made up of revenue from the Crown Estate, given annually to fund the queen and other royals in their official duties. Don't feel too bad, though - we imagine that her enormous trust fund (and the aid from her father, who "supports both of his daughters financially from his private income") will keep her afloat.

But if she's not fulfilling royal duties on a daily basis, what exactly is the 28-year-old princess up to? Eugenie has always had a passion for art (she studied English literature and art history at Newcastle University, from which she graduated in 2012), and in 2013, she moved to New York City to pursue that passion. As she told Harper's Bazaar back in 2016, "I've loved art since I was very little. I knew I definitely wouldn't be a painter, but I knew this was the industry for me. I love being able to share my passion for art with people."

Her first full-time job was at a high-end online auction house called Paddle8, which caters to modern collectors looking for very specific and very expensive collectible items. She spent roughly two years working at the shop as a benefit auctions manager, becoming the first royal to actually set up a life in the US, a move that was pretty shocking. In the Summer of 2015, the princess moved back to London to work for the Hauser & Wirth art gallery as an associate director, earning a promotion to the position of director two years later. According to Eugenie, her job responsibilities include "planning special projects, supporting the artists in the gallery, and managing events," which seems like the perfect fit for the princess.

Like her sister, Eugenie has involved herself in a number of philanthropic ventures in addition to her full-time job. She is a patron of the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital's Redevelopment Appeal (as she spent time at RNOH after she was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12) and the Teenage Cancer Trust, alongside her mother, Sarah Ferguson. Eugenie also serves as an ambassador of Project 0, a charity that works to prevent plastic pollution in the ocean. As cofounder of the Anti-Slavery Collective, Eugenie contributes to the fight against modern slavery, human trafficking, and violence against women, even speaking as a representative at the United Nations.

Eugenie and Beatrice's parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, may be divorced, but they are a united front when it comes to supporting their daughters' endeavors. "As a father, my wish for my daughters is for them is to be modern working young women, who happen to be members of the Royal Family, and I am delighted to see them building their careers," Andrew said in a press release. In an interview with People, their mother added, "These are two girls who've worked so hard in their own careers and have taken time off today to spread the word on teen cancer, which is so important."

Haley Lu Richardson Is Dating Your Crush in Five Feet Apart, and Engaged to Your Other Crush IRL

Nestled in the heartstrings-pulling sentiment of A Walk to Remember and The Fault in Our Stars, the sweet trailer for Five Feet Apart probably had you feeling all mushy inside. Two teenagers with cystic fibrosis who can't touch each other? Tissues, please! Viewers may immediately recognize the male lead as none other than Cole Sprouse, who's more or less cemented in pop culture as Riverdale's Jughead. But if you're wondering why his costar Haley Lu Richardson looks so familiar, it's because you've probably seen her before. The young actress's work is known across both popular and independent circuits, so she should definitely be on your radar!

Richardson first started her work in entertainment as a dancer, training in a competitive dance company for years before moving to Hollywood at age 16 to pursue acting. After a handful of TV roles, including a recurring one in the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, Ravenswood, Richardson debuted her first two major features in 2014 - the post-apocalyptic The Last Survivors and rom-com The Young Kieslowski.

One of her biggest projects to date is her role in M. Night Shyamalan's 2017 thriller Split, in which she plays Claire Benoit, one of the teenage girls captured by James McAvoy's "Dennis" personality to be sacrificed to the Beast. You might also remember Richardson from another angsty teen drama before Five Feet Apart - she starred as Hailee Steinfeld's grounded and sweet BFF in The Edge of Seventeen in 2016.

Besides bigger crowd-pleasers, Richardson has also been praised for her work in slice-of-life indie projects such as Columbus and Support the Girls. In Columbus, she stars across John Cho as Casey, a young woman who resides in the small town of Columbus, IN, in order to take care of her mother, a recovering drug addict. While it's no blockbuster, Columbus is a great quarter-life crisis flick, as well as a cinematography delight with its lush shots of beautiful architecture. Richardson deservedly received critical acclaim for it, earning a Gotham Independent Film Award nomination for best actress.

Her somber persona flips a complete 180 in Support the Girls, in which Richardson portrayed Maci, Regina Hall's spirited right-hand woman at a Hooters-like restaurant. It should be noted that the underrated movie just so happens to be one of Barack Obama's favorite 2018 films. The same year that Support the Girls came out, the actress also starred in two smaller historical dramas - Operation Finale and The Chaperone.

You can check out updates about Richardson's life and projects on her Instagram, where she occasionally posts about her fiance Brett Dier (Michael from Jane the Virgin!) and her cute Etsy shop for crocheted goods. In the meanwhile, peek ahead to see her latest roles!

Captain Marvel: Everything You Need To Know About Marvel Villain Ronan the Accuser

A superhero movie isn't much good without an equally super villain. The movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have definitely had their share of epic villains, from one-off baddies like Justin Hammer to long-term antagonists with their own epic story arcs, like Loki or the Winter Soldier. In the new Captain Marvel, a familiar face makes another appearance: Ronan the Accuser, the Kree extremist last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy. Played by Lee Pace, the blue-skinned zealot is back, perhaps even to show us a bit of his own origin story. Here's a recap of what we've learned about the character so far.

Ronan the Accuser first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014, when he was the primary villain of Guardians of the Galaxy. In that movie, his backstory and motivations are revealed. His hatred for Nova Empire and Xandar stems from the Kree-Nova War, which took place a millennium prior to the events of Guardians of the Galaxy. After the empires signed a peace treaty, he was so angry and disgusted that he ran away from the reaches of the Kree Empire, becoming an outlaw warlord and eventually agreeing to work for Thanos to attempt to exact his vengeance. It was during this time that he attacked the home world of Drax the Destroyer as well.

In the first Guardians film, he is seen searching for the Orb (later revealed to be the Power Stone) for Thanos, in exchange for Thanos's aid in destroying Xandar's home world. It's Ronan who sends Gamora to pursue Star-Lord and the Orb, thus inadvertently helping to form the Guardians of the Galaxy. When Ronan realizes Gamora has switched sides, he takes Nebula with him and sets off in pursuit, ultimately gaining possession of the Orb and taking the powers of the Infinity Stone within it for himself, betraying Thanos in the process. During the Battle of Xandar, Ronan's forces destroy almost the entirety of the Nova Corps fleet, but he loses control of the Power Stone during his confrontation with the Guardians and is subsequently destroyed when they direct its energy at him.

Ronan appears again in Captain Marvel, alongside his Guardians-era second-in-command Korath the Pursuer, as a less extremist, younger version of the character. Captain Marvel takes place some years before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, allowing Ronan to appear even though he's dead in the present day of the MCU. Here, his ties to the Kree are again at the forefront, as the war between the Kree and Skrull empires plays a major part in Captain Marvel, with the Kree being presented as the enemies of the shape-shifting Skrull.

In the comics, he's a longtime foe of the major hero teams, including the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers. He has ties to the original Captain Marvel, aka the Kree alien Mar-Vell, too: Mar-Vell initially works with Ronan and the Kree to scout out Earth, but the two become enemies when Ronan is overtaken by the Supreme Intelligence, an artificial intelligence that rules the Kree. Although Ronan the Accuser is not one of the long-running villains of the Marvel movies, he's definitely among the most memorable!

Say What?! Reese's ENORMOUS Peanut Butter Cups Weigh In at a Half-Pound Each

Thinner chocolates, you say? Strike that! Reverse it! It hasn't been long since the release of Reese's THiNS, but the candy company pulled a full Willy Wonka and turned everything topsy turvy by creating a giant pack of Reese's peanut butter cups that weigh in at one full pound (half a pound per cup). What are you even supposed to do with that much chocolate?! Well, Reese's suggests grabbing a friend - or two, or three, or seven - to share these oversize treats with. Realistically, you might have to do just that to get through ONE of these huge cups. Seriously, they're too much peanut butter, chocolaty goodness for one person to handle - unless you like a challenge.

Bustle first pointed us in the direction of these giant Reese's, which are available at IT'SUGAR ($20) and a few other retailers. Unlike an original Reese's cup, which has 110 calories each and two peanut butter cups per serving, the massive cups come in at 190 calories per serving (six servings per cup).

You've got to have a pretty big sweet tooth to finish one of these Herculean chocolates on your own. Reese's might want us to pick sides with the Reese's THiNS versus the huge Reese's, but no matter which you choose, there's going to be plenty of peanut butter and chocolate to go around this Easter.

Spiked Still Water Exists Now, and I Don't Know About You, but I'm Feeling Parched

If you often get bored at the thought of spending your day gulping down bottles of flavorless water, boy do I have news for you. Thanks to the genius minds over at Pura Still, spiked still water is officially a thing, so if you need me, I'll be out buying a six-pack.

Pura Still is a flavored, alcoholic still water that the company describes as being the "first of its kind" since it "doesn't need bubbles to keep things interesting." According to a product description, its primary ingredients are purified water, malt alcohol base, cane sugar, citric acid, natural fruit flavors, and coconut water powder. The gluten-free water is sold in three different flavors (blackberry, mango, and mandarin orange) and each bottle contains 90 calories and 1 gram of sugar, coming in at 4.5 percent ABV - just enough to get you a little tipsy, depending on your level of tolerance.

Pura Still is currently sold in stores like Trader Joe's, Rite Aid, Walmart, and more, so you can check out the store-locating tool on the brand's official website to find out where to buy it near you. Before you throw on your shoes to make a grocery store run, keep reading to get a look at each flavor.

Disney's New Tangled-Inspired Cupcakes Are Topped With Mini Lanterns - Too Cute!

I've got a dream, and it definitely involves getting my hands on one of Disney World's adorable new Rapunzel cupcakes. Available exclusively at the Intermission Food Court in the All Star Music Resort, these Tangled-inspired cupcakes kind of make me want to swing on over to Disney World on a 50-foot rope made out of my own hair. Just as we'd expect from the most magical place on Earth, Disney made the cupcake look a lot like Rapunzel herself - complete with a piped yellow buttercream braid and topped with rainbow sprinkles (like the flowers in her hair!). Each cupcake is also topped with a white chocolate paper lantern printed with the official Corona kingdom sun symbol.

The yellow cupcakes are piled high with purple raspberry-lemon buttercream - which swirls down inside the cupcake - and sprinkled with pearl-like sugar beads, according to Disney Food Blog. So, the next time you're at Disney World, why not take a page out of Rapunzel's book and try something new?

Sonic Is Selling Double Stuf Oreo Waffle Cones - So Yeah, Don't Mind If I Do

By the time you read this, I'll have already gotten up from my desk, grabbed my wallet, and headed to the nearest Sonic Drive-In to finally get my hands on one of its Double Stuf Oreo Waffle Cones. Because even though Spring hasn't sprung just yet, ice cream season is apparently whenever Sonic says it is, which is why the fast-food chain announced on Feb. 21 that the popular dessert option has officially made its way back to the menu for a limited time.

"It's BAAAACK! The Double Stuf @OREO Waffle Cone will make all your cookie and créme dreams come true," Sonic wrote on Twitter. The indulgent dessert is made with a chocolate Oreo waffle cone that's coated on the inside with Oreo crème and filled with vanilla ice cream before being topped off with even more Oreo crème and crushed Oreo pieces. The cones are currently being sold for just $3 each at participating Sonic locations, and since they'll only be around for a limited time, you might want to start sprinting to a restaurant near you.

Costco Has 5-Cheese Shamrock-Shaped Ravioli For St. Patrick's Day, So I'm Feeling Very Lucky

If you're still stressing about a somewhat elaborate St. Patrick's Day menu, you might want to put a hard stop on planning and get this shamrock-shaped ravioli instead. Costco is now carrying the festive item from Nuovo Pasta, the same company that sold its adorable heart-shaped ravioli for Valentine's Day. As cute as the themed ravioli is, it's all about taste, too - there's a blend of five cheeses in each little pillowy pocket of dough.

Imported Irish aged cheddar gives it sharpness, while mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, and white cheddar add creaminess and a salty bite. Serve it simply with butter and parmesan cheese, or dress it up with your favorite sauce (Might I suggest pesto for an extra dose of green?). At $10 for two big 20-ounce packages in one, this grocery-store gem has us feeling pretty lucky. Nuovo has had the popular shamrock-shaped pasta for years, so if you've yet to try it, stock up ahead of March 17.

Well, the Miami eatery offers a new "Instagram butler" service with your meal, and it's basically any social-media-lover's dream. If you are not in Miami and don't see any butlers in your near future, you can still get that money shot at your next meal with these #FoodPorn tips from Cleo's Instagram butlers. Keep reading to learn them all now, and happy snapping!

Pillsbury Has Ready-to-Bake Marshmallow Sugar Cookies - and My Oven Is Ready

The Pillsbury Doughboy is back at it again with his cute little laugh and more extra large cookies than our wallets can handle - this time in the form of Marshmallow Sugar Cookies! In a truly sweet post, Candy Hunting shared the news of the launch on Instagram and explained that the ready-to-bake cookies are marshmallow and sugar cookie-flavored, with little bits of actual marshmallow in every bite. With a drizzle of chocolate on top, they're basically the s'more cookie we all want (and deserve).

And that's not even the best part! While typical ready-to-make Pillsbury cookie dough is sold with 24 cookies per package, the Marshmallow Sugar Cookies will be sold at 12 cookies per package - which means they're going to be BIG. According to Best Products, the limited-edition cookies will go on sale beginning March 1 at retailers across the country, including Target, Walmart, Kroger, Wegmans, Meijer, and Hy-Vee. With little pockets of marshmallowy goodness baked right into each cookie, I can only imagine that they are going to be the perfect treat to pair with a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

My Boyfriend and I Almost Broke Up Over Household Chores - Here's How We Finally Made It Work

When my boyfriend and I first moved in together, I made it clear that I was not some magical cleaning fairy that would wash the dishes and vacuum the carpet whenever dirt would appear. We were now sharing the same space, and I expected both of us to pull our weight and our chores to be split evenly and fairly. But not long after we settled into our place, I found myself constantly following him around, picking up the dirty clothing he carelessly dropped on the floor. That quickly turned into me resenting my partner, shrugging off his affectionate advances, and grumbling under my breath constantly.

My boyfriend isn't insensitive to other people's needs, but now that I'm a bit calmer after the dust (pun intended) has settled, I can admit that there were definitely things I did wrong, too. I left water on the bathroom floor when I got out of the shower, which drove him nuts and to which I'd respond, "You care about that, but you can't pick your dirty clothes up?" Eventually we both realized we had habits that needed to change if this was going to work.

The reason some people seem helpless when it comes to housework isn't because they consciously believe their partner will do it. Subconsciously, once habits have been ingrained, many people often just don't "see" what needs to be done. There's even some evidence that messiness is in our DNA! I was raised in a home where clutter was an absolute no-no. However, I had a bathroom to myself when I was younger and almost never had to answer for my splashy showers since the water had often dried up before my mom ever saw it (the mold was a different story).

But back to our new apartment. If there was one thing that got us through this difficult period, it was compromise. We calmly and reasonably discussed how we both worked the same eight hours each day, therefore, we should divide the housework more evenly. We attempted splitting the chores up 50/50. My boyfriend readily agreed to the responsibility of running the recycling to the sorting center twice weekly, vacuuming the carpets, sweeping off the front and back porches, and - yes - picking clothes up off the floor.

I handled the daily counter wipe downs, mopping two to three times per week, and cleaning the bathrooms weekly. We also agreed upon hanging a white board on the kitchen refrigerator with a list of housework we wanted done, as well as by when, and I must admit, having the sign right there in front of us every time we reached into the fridge for a soda helped a lot.

Another big piece of advice I have for new couples moving in together is to consider downsizing your home and belongings. Having less space to clean makes it that much easier to tackle, and having less stuff to pack, unpack, and dust off is a huge win during this new and often stressful time period.

We bonded and opened up a lot to each other during this time period as well. He let me know that my penchant for perfection made him feel incompetent, and my constant "my way or the highway" mentality made him feel like no attempts to please me were ever good enough. It was equally important that I work on changing myself as well. I had to let go of the comfort I had established while living in my own element for so long. During this trial-and-error period, I learned what mattered to him in a clean home, as he did with me. I also had to learn to show appreciation for what he did do, instead of constantly focusing on what had yet to be done. He did the same.

You learn to pick your battles, because, let's face it, learning to live with another person isn't easy. Ever. However, living together as a couple is a lot different than living with a roommate. There's a vested interest on both ends to make it work, which is a positive. But a potential negative is that there's also a comfort with a partner that will probably be a bit different than what you had with your roommate in college. It's easier to jump to anger and say things you don't mean with someone you're more comfortable with. Understanding this was the first step to fixing our daily interactions at home.

Those who find themselves in a similar situation may want to try the following:

  • Focus on positive praise, not negative criticisms.
  • Communicate openly about what's needed from your partner.
  • Address feelings of resentment immediately - bottling up feelings leads to contempt, which murders love.
  • Learn to let the little things go - as in, prioritize.

Is my relationship with my boyfriend now perfect? Of course not. No relationship is. But have my boyfriend and I mastered the art of compromise? I think so. Every relationship involves both give and take, and spending less than five minutes weekly wiping up the bathroom floor is a bit of labor I don't find at all burdensome if it means not finding his shirts all over the bedroom floor. Communication and appreciation kept our relationship alive during this transitional time, and our bond is now stronger than ever.

The Absolute Best Way to Cook Zucchini Noodles

Congrats! You've successfully made zoodles in a spiralizer. Now, onto the important question: how do you actually cook them? Unlike pasta, you fortunately don't need to wait around for a pot of water to boil. Instead, you treat the veggie "noodles" as vegetables you'd normally sauté on the stovetop.

The best way to cook a batch of zoodles is to heat one or two tablespoons of oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, in a skillet over medium heat and sauté the noodles with a generous pinch of salt and a little pepper. After about five minutes, the zoodles will be slightly softened but not mushy, which is what you're after. They'll be similar to the al dente texture of traditional pasta.

And that's it! You can turn off the heat and turn your zucchini noodles into a full meal catered to your preference. You could add homemade bolognese sauce, basil pesto and parmesan cheese, lemon butter shrimp and red pepper flakes, or even more of your favorite satueed veggies to the mix. After trying out this healthy alternative to carb-heavy pasta a few times, you might convince yourself you like it almost as much as the real thing.

Ready to get cooking? Here are some more zucchini noodle recipes to get you started.

Camila Mendes Opened Up About Giving Up Dieting and Learning to Love Her Curves

Camila Mendes has been very open about her experiences with dieting and disordered eating in the past. In a recent Instagram post made to honor the start of National Eating Disorder Awareness week, the Riverdale actress shared a heartfelt message about the moment she learned to love her body the way it is.

"About a year ago, I decided to stop dieting and chasing this idea of a body that I was conditioned to believe is the only acceptable shape," she captioned a photo. "I was never concerned with weight and numbers, but I cared a lot about having a flat tummy, no cellulite, and those 'give that girl a sandwich' arms that make you look slender from every angle."

The 24-year-old went on to point out that once she stopped focusing on weight loss, she began to put more emphasis on the state of her overall health. That meant consistently making sure that she was drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and eating the right amount of vegetables while not being afraid to indulge every once in a while. "I started trusting myself, and trusting that I care enough about my well-being to make healthy choices more often than not," she wrote. "But also I started allowing myself to make 'bad' choices. Because those made me feel free, and like I wasn't trapped in an unhappy lifestyle."

"Why should I care to look like a runway model when my curves got me lookin' like a damn fertile, renaissance goddess?"

Mendes recently opened up about her "addiction to dieting" in an interview with Shape. She told the magazine that she once had an "emotional relationship with food and anxiety" that fueled her fear of eating carbs. "I'd go a week without eating them, then I would binge on them, and that would make me want to purge." She eventually sought out help from both a therapist and a nutritionist, who helped lessen her anxiety in regards to food and educate her on what a balanced diet looks like.

Mendes wrapped up her Instagram caption by reminding her fans of the importance of finding beauty in their own bodies. "There is a life for you in which you can be healthy in both mind and body," she wrote. "It's not always rainbows and butterflies, but whenever I struggle, I always come back to this: Why should I care to look like a runway model when my curves got me lookin' like a damn fertile, renaissance goddess?"

You Want It? You Got It! Starbucks's New Cloud Macchiatos Have Fewer Calories Than the Original

You like my coffee? Gee, thanks, just bought it. In collaboration with Ariana Grande, Starbucks has released the new Cloud Macchiato, available in Caramel and Cinnamon flavors - and OMG, my tastebuds are buzzing to try it. But since both drinks are topped with a cloud of fluffy foam, espresso shots, and a drizzle of caramel, it's easy to wonder whether the liquid calories are really worth it. Luckily, in addition to their dreamy new vibe and lighter aesthetic, the Cloud Macchiatos are also slightly lighter on the sugar and calories than a typical macchiato.

According to the coffee company's website, a grande Iced Caramel Cloud Macchiato made with whole milk is 190 calories and 27 grams of sugar, and the grande Iced Cinnamon Cloud Macchiato made with whole milk comes in at exactly 200 calories and 29 grams of sugar. For comparison, a typical grande Iced Caramel Macchiato made with whole milk has 280 calories and 34 grams of sugar, making the Cloud Macchiato a slightly healthier option. And, if you want to swap out whole milk for almond milk, the Iced Caramel Cloud Macchiato would come in at 150 calories and 24 grams of sugar.

The American Heart Association still recommends women limit added sugars to no more than 25 grams per day and men limit added sugars to no more than 36 grams per day, so a Cloud Macchiato is still definitely a treat. But, at almost half the calories, feel free to indulge and sip your iced coffee with your head in the clouds.

Build Muscle and Strengthen Your Arms, Legs, and Core With This Full-Body Workout

It's not asking too much to want strong arms, toned legs, a big butt, and sexy abs. All of this is possible with weightlifting. For a while, women thought that picking up weights heavier than 10 pounds would turn them into Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, but we busted that myth. Weightlifting isn't just great for your physical appearance (curves on top of curves); it's also great for strengthening your bones and can help improve your sleep.

Full-Body Workout

Directions:

  • Before getting started, be sure to go through a dynamic warmup to get your body prepared for the workout. An example of this is: butt kicks, high knees, plank saw, plank walkouts, leg swings, and glute bridges. You can also add in a light, five-minute jog.
  • After the warmup, grab two sets of heavy dumbbells. One will be for the arm exercises and the other for the leg exercises. This will be different for everyone, but choose a weight that will challenge you on the last two to four reps. A good indicator that you need to lift heavier weights is if you feel like you could do more than 12 reps without feeling fatigued (shaky arms/legs).
  • Take 45-60 seconds of rest in between sets and one minute of rest in between exercises.
  • Once you're done with the workout, be sure to foam roll, stretch, and replenish with protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes.

If Your Goal Is to Burn Fat and Build Muscle, an Expert Says to Do This While Lifting Weights

Getting stronger and building muscle is more complex than just grabbing a pair of dumbbells and doing the first five exercises that come to mind. In order to build muscle and improve your strength, you've got to go into the gym with a plan, train consistently, fuel your body with adequate nutrition, and be patient. Whether you've just finished your first strength workout ever or you hit the weights four times a week, there's an important step to lifting you need to know if you want to build muscle.

When you lift weights, your muscles are activated and they can either shorten (a concentric contraction), lengthen (an eccentric contraction), or not change in length (an isometric contraction). To find out if the eccentric contraction (the amount of time your muscles spend under tension) can help you build more muscle, POPSUGAR spoke to Heather Milton, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist and clinical specialist at NYU Langone's Sports Performance Center.

What Is an Eccentric Movement?

"Eccentric movement or exercise is really when the muscle is lengthening," Heather told POPSUGAR. She then explained that our muscles are different patterns of tissue and fiber that overlay over each other. If you're feeling lost, put your phone down and interlace your fingers. This is how your muscle fibers sit, she explained.

"When you're lengthening the muscle, those fibers are actually stretching away from each other," she said. As this happens, Heather explained that tiny proteins in our muscles try and hold them together. "When you're doing eccentric exercise, you're actually, in a sense, elongating the muscle in a controlled fashion, meaning that the proteins within the muscle are actually trying to control the rate that you're elongating it," she said.

To help you visualize this, think of a bicep curl. When your hands are near your shoulders and you begin to lower the weight back down toward your thighs, that's the eccentric part of the exercise.

Why Eccentric Exercises Are Important For Building Muscle

If you're trying to build muscle, you should start focusing on the eccentric portion of each exercise. Why? Because the longer the muscle is under tension (the longer it takes you to lengthen the muscle) the more that muscle has to work. For example, if your trainer or group instructor tells you to lower down in a squat for three seconds, time under tension is what they're referring to. As you lower your body down, your quadriceps (aka your thighs) muscles will lengthen.

By spending more time under tension, the proteins in our muscle have to work harder to hold the muscle and control the contraction, according to Heather. This causes tiny breaks in the muscle that get stimulated after exercise as you sleep, which is imperative to improving your muscle health, quality, and strength, she said. While you sleep, your body begins to repair the tiny filaments and fibers that were broken during exercise, and they grow back healthier and stronger than before.

How to Perform Eccentric Exercises

Eccentric exercises can help you build more muscle, but there are a few things you need to consider. Heather said, in general, "If you're doing slow, controlled time under tension (called the hypertrophy or muscle-building phase) . . . that's where you would gain the muscle mass."

You'll also need to factor in the load (how much weight you're lifting) and the types of exercises you're doing. If you're training in the hypertrophy phase, Heather said to follow a three or four count tempo. Here's how to determine how heavy you should be lifting, and a here's list of exercises that will help you build muscle.

If You Want to Lose Belly Fat Forever, a Dietitian Says to Ditch These 3 Foods

Getting rid of the fat around your tummy isn't just about looks. "Belly fat is also referred to as visceral fat, and is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions," NYC-based registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator Rachel Stahl, MS, CDN, told POPSUGAR. That's why it's important to lose it.

While there is no one magic bullet when it comes to reducing belly fat, and you unfortunately can't spot-reduce fat specifically from your midsection, you can lower your overall body-fat percentage, which will help slim your waistline. You can also avoid certain foods that have been shown to promote fat storage in your belly. Ultimately, it all boils down to nutrition, which is why people say abs are made in the kitchen. Here are three things you can keep in mind every time you eat to reach your lean-belly goals.

You Definitely Shouldn't Work Out in This Kind of Underwear, According to 2 Doctors

As important as a cute pair of leggings is during a workout, what you wear under them - or under your running shorts, bike shorts, or tennis skirt - might be even more crucial. And it's definitely a lot harder to know what makes a pair of underwear good or bad for a workout. Should you go for moisture-wicking or plain cotton? Are there any styles to steer clear of?

To answer the second question: definitely. Jenn Conti, MD, an ob-gyn at Stanford, said that when it comes to working out, you definitely want to stay away from thongs. Some people choose them to avoid getting visible panty line in yoga pants or leggings, she said, "but the reality is that tight undies that ride up your bum are a setup for infection." She explained that the fabric presses right up against your anus, where there's naturally a lot of bacteria. Since the material also sits right next to your vagina, those germs get passed along all too easily, putting you at risk for a urinary tract infection.

So, what should you wear under your leggings or shorts? Erica Cahill, MD, an ob-gyn and cohost of The V Word podcast with Dr. Conti, recommended that anyone with a particularly sensitive vagina wear cotton underwear, preferably undyed, since some women are allergic to dyes. "There are no official rules here," Dr. Cahill said. "But in general, the less restricting and more breathable, the better." If all of this is making you realize how badly you need to update your underwear drawer, check out these options that wick moisture and offer good coverage while staying light and breathable - perfect for your next workout.

The Best Thing Since Avocado Toast: Avocado Chips (and They're Gluten-Free!)

Avocados are high in healthy fats that help promote weight loss and keep us fuller for longer. They're also famous on social media for their picture-perfect appearance (most notably when spread on toast). This fruit (yes, fruit) is the celebrity of brunch menus, and if you're obsessed, you'll be happy to know that one company is making it possible to enjoy them with a lot of extra crunch. AvoLov offers avocado chips in three flavors: Pink Himalayan Salt, Sriracha, and Chili and Lime. These dried green triangles are gluten-free and vegan - and ready to make your next snack totally spectacular.

According to the AvoLov website, like all of its products, these chips start with "hand pealed and pitted, fresh" Hass avocados that are then dehydrated using "low temperature, proprietary drying technology," which "preserves all the superfood nutrients and creamy flavor." Along with Hass avocados, they're made with simple ingredients: tapioca flour, sea salt, and seasoning, the company wrote on Instagram. And the best part? These chips aren't fried: "All the oils in the chips are the natural oils from the avocado."

Nutritional facts are limited, though AvoLov's Instagram highlights reveal that each bag contains between 185 and 190 calories. They're advertised as being free of sugar and rich in fiber and potassium. While you can buy AvoLov's avocado powder on Amazon, it appears that the chips were only sold on Amazon for a limited time when they first launched on Cinco de Mayo 2018. AvoLov founder and CEO Eric Healy told POPSUGAR that they're now available at select Whole Foods in the following states: Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey (Marlton and Princeton only), Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Washington DC, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. You can also purchase them online via the AvoLov site for $5 a bag. Will these rise to fame as quickly as avocado toast? We bet yes.

The Unexpected Tool That Kept Me Calm During the Most Stressful Times of My Life

Between facing a job loss, becoming self-employed, and learning a lot more about myself than I could have ever imagined, let's just say last year was one for the books. I searched high and low for ways to calm my anxieties and stay focused on the positive, but nothing seemed to work. I tried every standard remedy, and yet what ultimately brought me some peace of mind wasn't meditation or CBD, but essential oils.

I was about two months into working as a full-time freelancer - and having a hard time adjusting to life without a 9-to-5 - when a friend mentioned how much she loved her essential oil diffuser. I had tried and tested essential oils during my days as a beauty editor, and while I was curious about their healing properties, I never really knew what to do with them. That didn't stop me from being intrigued by a diffuser, especially since my friend told me that the scents and steam helped her feel calmer. I figured, if nothing else had worked to help me find my Zen, it couldn't hurt to try it.

I did some research on essential oil diffusers, which helped me create a wish list: anything I purchased would need to mist for several hours, and it couldn't be noisy or distribute heat throughout the room. I ultimately settled on a diffuser from Saje Natural Wellness because it checked all the boxes and the brand also offered plenty of essential oils, including lavender, eucalyptus, and lemongrass.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how these diffusers work, here's a bit of a breakdown. You fill a small compartment of the diffuser with water, then add your essential oils. It's advised that you add around 10 to 15 drops of oil into the water, depending on how intense you'd like the aroma. You then turn on the diffuser to activate the steam, and within a few minutes, you'll notice the scent and steam begin to fill the room. Essential oil diffusers typically don't use heat, so you're getting the oils in a very pure form.

The first time I tried the diffuser, I opted for lavender, since it's known to help reduce stress. I'd be lying if I said my anxieties melted away the moment I let some oils stream into the air, but I did find that I was able to get my work done at a better pace. It felt good to make self-care more of a priority, and although the scent wasn't my favorite, I knew I wanted to try the diffuser again.

This isn't to say that the essential oils have removed those feelings entirely - that's just not how anxiety works - but they have helped me cope better than other methods I've tried.

I set it out for about two hours the next night, this time using eucalyptus oil, which is also supposed to help promote a sense of calmness. It was a game changer. The eucalyptus made me feel more relaxed than the lavender but also more productive, and it eased a lot of the tension I had been feeling, which is exactly what I needed to stay on track with my work. This time, with my mind quieter, I also found the sound of the steam to be very soothing.

I used the diffuser three times a week throughout the next month and noticed that I didn't feel my usual sense of worry as frequently as I had before. This isn't to say that the essential oils have removed those feelings entirely - that's just not how anxiety works - but they have helped me cope better than other methods I've tried, like cutting caffeine or going for a walk. I'm hopeful that it'll be even more relaxing soon, as I plan to add some deep-breathing exercises to my routine. If you're ready to give an essential oil diffuser a try, keep reading for some options that caught my eye, including my personal favorite.

All These College Gymnasts' Floor Routines Are So Good, We Can't Stop Watching

Last April, UCLA won its seventh NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship, but not before a floor routine from one of its student-athletes went viral. The theme was Michael Jackson. The gymnast's name? Katelyn Ohashi. (And yes, she even did the moonwalk.)

In the Bruins' Jan. 12 meet against California, UC Davis, and Michigan State, Katelyn took the internet by storm with a new routine that earned her a perfect 10. Learn How to Lift Weights (and Build Muscle) With This 4-Week Beginner Workout Plan

Weightlifting is one of the best ways to build muscle and lower your body fat percentage. A 2006 review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reported that weightlifting will also increase your bone mass, improve your cardiovascular levels, and enhance your sense of well-being.

If your goal is to learn how to lift weights, but you aren't exactly sure where to get started, I've got you covered. This four-week strength program will provide you with a strength foundation and teach you the basics.

Because everyone has different strength levels, here are general recommendations to determine the amount of weight you should lift. For upper-body exercises, I recommend starting with 7.5- to 10-pound dumbbells. If the weight is too light or too easy, feel free to make adjustments. For lower-body exercises with dumbbells, start with 10- to 15-pound dumbbells increasing or decreasing the weight as necessary. For barbell exercises, begin by adding 10 pounds to each side increasing or decreasing the weight as needed.

As always, make sure to warm up and cool down before and after your workout. Here's a dynamic warmup and a total-body stretch sequence to follow.
