Exactly How Captain Marvel Ties Into Guardians of the Galaxy
Because it's set in the '90s, Captain Marvel is a prequel to most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But there's one film in particular that it most directly preludes: The Guardians of the Galaxy. Watching the new movie, you'll encounter Ronan the Accuser and Korath, two familiar faces from the 2014 Marvel installation. While we learn about Carol Danvers's past, we're also getting the backstory about the Kree-Skrull War. Need help connecting the dots between these two movies? Here's how the Kree baddies fit into both Star-Lord and Captain Marvel's narratives.
Warning: major spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel!
Going by a chronological timeline, let's take a look at Ronan as we see him in Captain Marvel. What you need to know is that in the '90s, the Kree (an alien race) have been fighting the Xandarians and Skrulls (other alien races) for a long time. Because the Kree haven't agreed to a peace treaty yet, Ronan hasn't become a radical as of Captain Marvel. But he's not exactly on the good side either. It turns out that the Skrulls are actually refugees trying to find a place to live as the Kree brutally propel the war onward. In the movie, Ronan's in cahoots with Mar-Vell's nemesis Yon-Rogg, who calls upon him to destroy Earth with missiles. Luckily, Danvers taps into her full powers and defeats Ronan, causing him to retreat after she destroys his bombers. Captain Marvel promises to return to space, vowing to end the Kree-Skrull War and help the Skrulls establish a new home.
By the time we get to Guardians of the Galaxy, it's 20-something years later, after the Kree have put in place a peace treaty. With Korath as his loyal subordinate, Ronan teams up with Thanos, promising the Dark Lord to find the Power Stone. In exchange, Thanos would help with fighting the Nova Corps from the former Kree enemy planet Xandar. Things don't go as planned for Ronan and Korath, who end up as intergalactic toast thanks to the Guardians.
Guardians introduces the Kree after their intergalactic war, and Captain Marvel shows them while they were still fighting. Now the only thing that's missing is what happened between these two periods. Was it actually Danvers who stopped the war? How did Ronan become radicalized? These sound like questions that Captain Marvel 2 can properly answer. Or, if we're lucky, we might find out sooner, since Captain Marvel is definitely going to be in Endgame.
Seth Rogen and Zazie Beetz Join Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone Reboot - See Who Else Is in the Cast!
Ever since CBS announced that Jordan Peele would be involved in The Twilight Zone reboot, we've been eager to see who else would be joining him. While Rod Sterling will forever remain a Twilight Zone staple, there's no denying that Peele has proven he has a way with that eerie feel the show made its trademark. We've already witnessed his skill with horror in Get Out, and his upcoming social thriller Us will probably convince us even more that he's the right man for the job.
Of course we've been itching to see who he'll add to the roster of guest stars for this precious remake of a fan-favorite. Several well-known faces have signed on to appear on the show in the past few months, including Nappily Ever After's Sanaa Lathan and Ghosted's Adam Scott. Captain Marvel's Costume Designer Decodes the Hidden Messages in the Film's 90s-Era Wardrobe
When I first found out that Captain Marvel would predominantly take place in the '90s, I had a few questions. First, if Carol Danvers would be bopping around Los Angeles in 1995, how would she ever travel forward in time to save the Avengers in 2018 following Thanos's infamous snap? How would a young Nick Fury fit into the equation? And - fingers crossed - would there be any recreations of Cher Horowitz's many outfits in Clueless?
While I've since found out the answers to all three questions - apparently Carol can time travel, is best friends with Fury, and prefers grunge to yellow plaid - I still had a few things on my mind about how Captain Marvel's costume designer, Sanja Milkovic Hays, made Brie Larson's superpowered alien look not only like a relatable, passable human, but also one whose wardrobe I would happily raid today in 2019.
I hopped on the phone with Hays just in time for the film's release, where she filled me in on everything from why she decided Carol would be a Nine Inch Nails fan to the touching history behind her signature bomber jacket.
POPSUGAR: I know that you've worked on a lot of male-dominated action films, like the Fast and Furious franchise and the Maze Runner films, so what was it like outfitting a female hero this time around?
Sanja Milkovic Hays: It was very different, of course. It's fun, but there are different issues, you know. We had to fit things to make sure she looked like a serious superhero, a serious warrior, and yet keep her looking feminine and like a woman. The whole balance was kind of an interesting exercise. But I was very lucky that Brie looks like a goddess. [Laughs.] That was not that difficult. It was much more involving, because of the demands of her role; we tried to really put a lot of time and effort into making her feel as comfortable as possible. We knew that she'd have to shoot for such a long time, doing everything from jumping to running. It was also interesting because she'd come to a fitting, and [I'd be like] 'OK now, her body has changed from her exercises,' and we would do things to accommodate that.
PS: The suit looks really true to the comics, but I imagine there were still a few updates made to it to modernize the look - was that something you worked on yourself, or was it a bigger, more collaborative effort?
SMH: The first sort of translation from the comics to the costume was done in Marvel's digital development department, they did the concept drawings of the suit. And then when I came on board, we continued tweaking the details and the shapes. We worked with her actual body, and [the way she moved] . . . her body changed drastically while filming, so it was a lot of tweaking. But the conscious decision was made at the beginning that the version of her suit - because there are many versions in the comics of her costumes - that we not make it like a bathing suit-type, as they say.
PS: How did you go about choosing the street clothes Carol wears, since it's a decade as iconic as the '90s? It has everything from grunge and plaid to bright colors and neon.
SMH: There was a lot of talk about that, because the '90s, as you know, were quite fashionable. We were trying to figure out something that looks '90s, but that's still attractive to the audience, and still fashionable. We looked through a lot of research of the '90s, and decided a character like her, that grunge is the way to go. We see her at a rock 'n' roll concert, and wearing '80s band t-shirts, so to keep it to that almost tomboyish image and attitude that she has, we decided that rather than going for neon spandex or something equally silly, that grunge was the best way to go. She ended up looking really cute in that [t-shirt and leather jacket]. In the end I think it was the right decision. There was also a lot of talk, of course, of choosing the band [that would be on her t-shirt].
PS: Yeah, was there a particular reason you chose Nine Inch Nails?
SMH: There was a lot of back and forth, because we thought about the music, but we also had to look at the logos. We looked at some logos of bands, and some of them are very busy and colorful and stuff like that, so even though their music could be appropriate for the character, it would be too distracting from her face. But Nine Inch Nails was kind of sweet and subtle. It's there, but your eyes don't keep going down, dragging your attention from her face.
PS: I also really loved the nameplate necklace that Lashana Lynch's character, Maria Rambeau, wears, which is a nice nod to the era - was that something you had custom-made for the film?
SMH: We actually found that! We were looking for it, obviously, and would've probably made it if we didn't find it. But yes, we got that, which was great because it's a special touch to a mother whose daughter is the center of her life. We knew that would be something that she definitely would have had. Of course, we did a lot of talking to Lashana about that.
PS: She looked great. By the end of watching the movie, I was convinced that I needed a flight-suit like hers.
SMH: I know, she just looks great, right? That's all her. Her acting, her attitude . . . she looks like a real pilot. She looked great, but looked like a real pilot, not like a character. Both girls are amazing, and it was so great to work with them.
PS: Since costumes can play a key part in communicating messages about a character that a casual viewer might not pick up on at first - was there any instance of that in this film? Or explicitly, any special details on Carol's suit that we might have missed?
SMH: That's an interesting question. Wow, that's very interesting. Yes, there actually was. Her jacket doesn't show up as much in the movie as I was hoping for, but her jacket. There was a lot of talk about her brown bomber jacket, that at the end of the movie you see her put back on. [Editor's note: Carol has a brown bomber jacket that is returned to her by Maria Rambeau's daughter, Monica, when she comes back to earth.] That jacket has a history, actually. We took this brown '40s jacket . . . you know the way in the '40s, how pilots had their plane's insignia or artwork on their backs, a lot of times, in the second World War. The artwork that was on their backs would be something cartoony, but in her case it was a fighter plane. The idea was that possibly that jacket had been from her grandfather, or something like that. Like she has something that's in the family, like a vintage '40s jacket that had been passed down from her grandfather. Obviously that never ended up in the story, and ultimately wasn't necessary, but it was one of those things that made it a little bit more interesting. It gives her history.
Watch Out, 2019: Meghan Markle Is Just Getting Started
To say that Meghan Markle has had a whirlwind couple of years is a pretty big understatement. She's hit a handful of major milestones since getting engaged to Prince Harry and experienced some pretty huge life events in 2018 alone - all while inspiring her fans, charming humans and animals, and breaking a few rules along the way. Wedding? Check. Pregnancy? In progress. Changing the face of the British royal family forever? Girl, it's been handled.
Meghan has already kicked off 2019 by announcing her royal patronages, hiring a new deputy communications secretary, and making official appearances both solo and with Harry. The couple are also expected to make their widely publicized move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor soon - before welcoming their first child together in late April - and will be embarking on a royal tour of the US in the Fall. Last year may have been Meghan's introduction to the royal family (as well as the world), but 2019 is when we'll see the Duchess of Sussex rolling up her sleeves and getting down to business. Scroll through to see Meghan's best photos from 2019.
Chloë Grace Moretz on "Twisted Fairy Tale" Greta and Its Unconventional Horror Film Ending
If any universities out there are looking for someone to teach a class on how to properly scare the sh*t out of audiences with a horror film, I highly recommend giving Chloë Grace Moretz a call.
The 22-year-old star has been sending chills down audiences' spines ever since her very first role at just 5 years old, when she played young Chelsea Lutz in The Amityville Horror. She's followed it up with hair-raising appearances in everything from Matt Reeves's 2010 vampire chiller Let Me In to her blood-soaked outing as the titular telekinetic in the 2013 Carrie reboot. Now, she leads Greta, the Neil Jordan-directed psychological thriller that's terrifying enough to make you never want to speak to a stranger again.
As Frances, Moretz comes across as wholesome, sweet, and just a bit naive, which is what makes her easy prey for Greta Hideg (Isabelle Huppert). When Frances finds a green handbag on the subway while coming home from her job waiting tables in New York City, she does what any well-adjusted, kind human would do, against the advice of her cynical roommate (Maika Monroe): Frances digs out the license inside, goes about returning the bag and its contents to its rightful owner, and strikes up a deep mother-daughter friendship with the lonely Greta (OK, maybe not everyone would do that last bit).
But when Frances discovers Greta has multiple versions of the same (chic, not gonna lie) handbag in her home, which she plants around the city in hopes of luring young women to her Brooklyn home, Frances realizes the sweet, older French woman she's been having dinner with might want to, at worst, wear her skin as a coat and, at best, lock her away in a secret room forever. So, you know, not exactly great choices for poor Frances.
In a playing field filled with recycled revivals of old horror films, Greta stands out for a number of reasons, chief being Moretz's excellent, nightmare-inducing performance. I recently hopped on the phone with the actress to get the lowdown on everything from both of the film's wild twists (yes, both) to THAT finger scene.
Warning: Spoilers for Greta are discussed below, so tread carefully.
POPSUGAR: The first thing that really struck me about Greta was how all the main characters are women - Greta, Frances, and Erica - which isn't something that you necessarily see much in the horror genre. I was wondering if that was something that specifically appealed to you when you first read the script?
Chloë Grace Moretz: Most definitely. I think it was, for me, a really wonderful opportunity to subvert the horror genre. So casting the Anthony Hopkins character as Isabelle Huppert, casting the boyfriend character as Maika Monroe, and being able to depict that onscreen was I think a lot more interesting. It was a massive thing that drew me to the project.
PS: I love how the villain is this unassuming, petite older woman who you wouldn't suspect to be a terrifying, twisted killer, and the same can even be said of Erica (Monroe's character), getting to be the hero at the end. But can you talk a little bit about the dynamic between Frances and Greta, and how you see it evolving throughout the film?
"When you get sucker punched with the reality of her obsession, it is as heartbreaking as it is terrifying."
CGM: Sure. That was something that we really wanted to get right from the beginning of the film in creating the relationship between Isabelle and I and knowing [director] Neil [Jordan]'s history, looking at Interview with a Vampire and In Dreams and his other films, you can really see that he loves this macabre fantasy, this twisted fairy tale he creates. But at the heart of his stories, in the through-line of his stories, is always the real, important, realistic personal relationships between his characters. That's why you hold true, that's why you stick through. With this one we really wanted to create this relationship between Isabelle and I that felt authentic and beautiful, so when you get sucker punched with the reality of her obsession, it is as heartbreaking as it is terrifying.
PS: It's funny you describe it as a fairy tale, because Frances is so much like a fairy tale character. She's so innocent and kindhearted, and it's easy to watch her and be like, "I would never do that. I'm not naive enough to do that kind of thing." But the film does such a good job of showing how trusting the wrong person can end up the way Frances does, in a box.
CGM: Very much so, completely. You never know really who you're letting into your life, and especially if you are someone like Frances, who I think continues to try and live her life in a fairly positive way. She's fairly naive but I think she is trying to see the good in people around her and those that she lets in her life. That is a double-edged sword, that when you are that open, you're also opening yourself up to potential disparity in the darkness you're bringing in.
PS: So, I want to talk a little bit about the twist at the end. Or at least, the second twist, with Erica coming to Frances's rescue, because, again, it felt pretty fresh to see the two of you victorious at the end, rather than the male PI bursting in and saving you. Was that the ending that was always going to happen in the script?
CGM: Yeah, that was always one of the big twists in the script. That, and the double dream were the big twists in the script. And those were things that I know Neil really loved from the beginning, but we really wanted to show that in the story, really confuse the audience, I think. So, it was important to be able to do a movie like this with three women at the helm. Usually you wouldn't see this depicted that way, and that was exciting for all of us. All of us were lucky to have the chance to play really fully-fleshed out characters, which is a massive step forward in a genre that is very male-dominated.
PS: Exactly. You're also coming off of Suspiria, which, again, features so many women in all the main roles. Do you enjoy this genre personally? Are you a big scary movie fan?
CGM: Definitely. Well, my first film I ever did was The Amityville Horror when I was 5-and-a-half years-old. And moving forward, doing Let Me In and then doing Carrie and then Suspiria and this . . . I've always loved, I think, the darkness. Especially in cinema, I think, the genre's a really wonderful way to depict interpersonal relationships, but to also fill seats with a breadth of audience members that are going to buy a ticket no matter what because they're massive fans of horror. But then taking in really intricate and intense storytelling, which I think the genre really lends itself well to if done correctly.
PS: There are so many scenes in Greta that freaked me out, but the claustrophobia I felt watching Frances get locked in that box was the worst. What was filming that like?
CGM: I'm genuinely claustrophobic in real life, so for me to film that scene, it was incredibly brutal. But Isabelle was an awesome partner to do that with, and she was so sweet and so kind. And Neil was so wonderful. He shut down the set and he kept it nice and quiet and really took his time with me so as to not freak me out too much.
PS: And the cookie cutter scene!
CGM: [Laughs.] Yeahhh.
PS: Was it as gross as it looked?
CGM: It's so spooky. We had a fun time playing with that appendage, though. I remember we had several different prosthetics hanging around and we would hide them in catering, in different random candy bowls and coffee cups. We had that pop up in quite a few places. [Laughs.]
PS: So you and Isabelle had a fun time on set, when you weren't trying to kill each other onscreen?
CGM: It was incredible! I mean, she's such a wonderful woman and we became close friends after making the film. We had a great time playing around [on set] and then jumping into these crazy moments. And I really try to not take things very seriously when we're doing movies like this to try and keep as much levity as possible in the moments of depravity. So we found it important to remind ourselves to keep laughing.
Greta is now in theaters.
Goose the Cat Is Paw-sibly Our Favorite Character in Captain Marvel, For Good Reason
Marvel's newest hero makes her debut in the exciting new film, Captain Marvel, but it turns out Carol Danvers isn't the only superstar in the film. Goose, the adorable tabby that follows Carol around on her adventures on Earth, has stolen the hearts of many Captain Marvel viewers with just a swish of his tail.
Technically, Goose is what's known as a "Flerken," which is a race of aliens that just happen to look like the average house cat. We can't decide if the fact that Goose can swallow a whole Skrull-sized alien by snagging them with the tentacles from his mouth is terrifying or just plain badass. But either way, it's just one of the reasons we love him so! He also happens to be one of the few beings who can keep track of the Tesseract for more than five minutes, even if it's because he swallows it.
Keep reading to see just how popular Goose already is with Captain Marvel fans!

T-Pain Uses Auto-Tune as a Choice Because, Let's Face It, the Man Can Actually Sing
T-Pain recently shocked viewers when he revealed himself as the Monster - and crowned winner - on Fox's competition show The Masked Singer. Over the course of 10 episodes, the 33-year-old singer, rapper, and producer belted a number of tunes under his furry costume, including Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now," Sam Smith's "Stay With Me," and Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It."
Although T-Pain's musical career is heavily characterized by his use of Auto-Tune, longtime fans (and new ones) know that he doesn't really need any mechanized help when it comes to his vocals because he can actually sing. In fact, in a 2014 interview with NPR's program All Things Considered, he said that he didn't use Auto-Tune to sound good. "I was just using it to sound different," he explained.
From his popular set on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series to his beautiful rendition of the national anthem at a Dodgers game, watch some of his best vocal performances as himself and the Monster ahead!
These Emotional American Idol Auditions Will Have You Swimming in a Stream of Tears
Although we're only a few episodes into the new season of American Idol, we've already cried ourselves into a puddle, thanks to all the passionate and sentimental auditions thus far. The premiere immediately set the tone by featuring an incredibly emotional performance from 19-year-old contestant Kai the Singer. As soon as she belted The Temptations' 1965 classic "My Girl," the judges - Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan - were brought to tears. Another participant named Shayla "Shayy" Winn - who revealed that she's legally blind - had a similar effect as she sang Andra Day's 2015 anthem "Rise Up." And that's only the beginning. Look ahead to see even more touching moments from this season!

I Went on 30 Dates in 30 Days, and Here's What Happened
"Who has time to find that many guys to go out with?" Rayna Greenberg and Ashley Hesseltine mused as we sipped coffees in the West Village last Fall. The duo hosts the hilarious podcast, Girls Gotta Eat, which is full of raw and relevant humor that hits on exactly what it's like to be a single millennial lady in New York City. At the time I was interviewing them for an article on dating trends in 2019 and simultaneously contemplating a move from San Francisco to New York. I asked them about dating experiments and they shared an idea they had to challenge themselves to 30 dates in 30 days, that they ultimately decided was more trouble than it was worth.
Challenge accepted, I thought to myself.
This comedy duo's throwaway idea piqued my interest. I imagined this was a great way to get to know a new city, hit the ground running on my romantic life in the New Year, and test my dating prowess. I knew I could do it on my home turf, but could I possibly find 30 eligible bachelors to date in my first month in a new city?
With only one way to find out, I decided to make the move official. I landed in Manhattan and started the clock immediately. It wasn't easy, it was only sometimes fun, and it turns out, Rayna and Ashley were right to scrap this idea. By the end, I was exhausted, disillusioned, and considered swearing off dating altogether, but the important thing is, I made it. Here's what happened.
Here's How a Pair of Globetrotters Added Some Wanderlust Into Their Outdoor Wedding
When Mike and Kim decided to tie the knot, they wanted the ceremony to be centered around something they both enjoy: traveling! Since the beginning of their relationship, they have been exploring new places all over the globe by making sure to visit a new country every year. It started with their wedding invitations, which resembled passports, complete with stamps from the seven countries they had visited together. There were many more charming touches to the wedding that incorporated the travel theme, from seat assignments that looked like plane tickets to globes used in the decor. They even displayed some souvenirs from their trips and treated their guests to a trunk of their favorite things from all over the world.
The wedding took place at Vineland Estates Winery in Canada, which is fitting for a couple that likes the outdoors. "Since we wanted our wedding to be intimate and romantic, with only close friends and families, we decided to go with a rustic wedding style in a winery setting (it is simple but elegant)," Mike said. "We like the outdoors a lot, and we really appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature, so we wanted our decor to be as natural as possible."

47 Things That Define True Love
Along with the new wrinkle on my forehead and the increasing severity of hangovers, getting older has also brought me something a lot more welcome - it's brought me a little bit of wisdom. With each passing year, we understand more about ourselves and our relationships. My significant other and I have been together for over five years, and I've had some of the best experiences of my life with him. We've also had some pretty difficult ones. While I'm not sure there's one true secret to making things work, I do know that it's possible if you're both really in it together.
We've changed over the years and so has the nature of our love. We've experienced the excitement of falling hard for each other, we've challenged our resilience with a move across the country with each other (and a very grumpy cat), and we've started over in a new city with no money and few friends. We've celebrated births of family members together and mourned the loss of them, too. We've experienced the novelty of the honeymoon phase wearing off and a deeper, more peaceful kind of love settling in. Falling in love is easy; staying in love is something you have to work at daily. Over the years I've seen little signs (often at the time not realizing what they were) that helped me decipher what true love really is and what that means. Here's what I've learned.

This Quirky Wedding Had a Dog in a Tux, Doughnuts, and Flowers Hanging From the Ceiling
Do you remember that feeling of joy at the end of a really great movie? Well, Rebecca and Ryan encapsulated that in their wedding, and these cute photos are the proof. "We wanted something personal, quirky, and different. Our color palette was millennial pink with navy and splashes of other colors," said Rebecca. "We didn't have a specific theme, but we wanted to pull inspiration from the imagery of Wes Anderson's films and midcentury kitsch."
They certainly achieved this with their stunning decor, which included a hanging chuppah with real and large paper flowers. The floral arrangements did not end there, as each table had an array of vases and jars filled with flowers. Rebecca wanted to add some personal touches to the wedding, so she embroidered Ryan's pocket square, designed the invitations, and even created handmade pins for all the guests!
One of the most special parts of the ceremony was when the couple recited their vows. "Ryan had spent probably a year writing his, and I wrote mine the night before the ceremony. They were perfect and made everything so much more special," confirmed Rebecca.
This wedding had everything from a dog in a tux to doughnuts for dessert, and we are obsessed with the bride's custom denim jacket. Keep reading to see the amazing photos; the hanging floral chuppah is a showstopper!

Not Sure How to Turn Off Your iPhone X Without a Home Button? Here's the Simple Trick
The iPhone X has gained popularity for a ton of good reasons. The Apple device, which has a retail price of $899 with no monthly contract, offers a stainless steel design, high-quality photos, and even Face ID, which makes your face your security password. But if you recently got an iPhone X, you may be wondering one simple thing: how do you turn it off?
One of the most obvious characteristics that the iPhone X has that earlier iPhone models do not is its all-screen design, which lacks the traditional home button. And with the absence of a home button, powering down your phone might be a bit confusing. And while the process is slightly different than before, it's still easy nonetheless.
First, press and hold down the side button, which is on the right side of the phone, and one of the volume buttons, which are on the left side of the phone. After pressing and holding these together, a slider will appear at the very top of your screen that says "slide to power off." Drag the slide over to the right, and voila, your iPhone is completely powered down. If you need to turn it on again, all you have to do is press the right side button until you see the Apple logo pop onto the screen.
This new way of shutting down your phone may feel a bit strange at first, but you'll get the hang of it in no time!

I Tried Trader Joe's Almond Butter Cups, and I Hate to Say It, but Reese's Still Wins
Whenever I see Reese's orange - that garish, beautiful color - my Pavlovian response is hunger, joy, and total satisfaction. As a kid, I loved those things. I stared longingly at the king-size packages in grocery store checkout aisles. I still think chocolate and peanut butter is one of the world's greatest culinary combinations.
Trader Joe's is known for its sinfully addictive dark chocolate peanut butter cups, of which I (and basically everyone else) am a huge fan. (Here are 19 of its other new products I'll be throwing in my cart soon.) When it rocked the nut-butter-chocolate world again with the recent release of dark chocolate almond butter cups ($4 for a tub of 18 mini cups), I thought, "That's it. I've gotta try this; it's like a richer, healthier version of the chocolate that got me through childhood."
I picked up a box, scoped out the nutrition information, and ate about 10. Here's what I thought.
Overeating at Meals Causing Weight Gain? Try This Science-Backed and Dietitian-Approved Trick
Notice the scale creeping up? It could be from eating too much at mealtimes. Although losing weight isn't always as simple as going low-calorie, there's no denying that taking in more energy than you expend will lead to weight gain. One of the biggest reasons people tend to eat too much at meals is that they let themselves get too hungry, then eat to the point past satisfaction.
Yes, listening to your hunger cues and going by the hunger scale are key ways to make sure you stay satiated and don't overeat. But if you end up at a restaurant feeling absolutely ravished, don't immediately go for the bread basket or chips and salsa. Instead, dietitians and research point to one appetizer you should definitely order: a broth-based soup.
"The benefit of having soup at the start of your meal is that it can help fill up volume in your stomach, leaving less room for more calorie-dense food items," registered dietitian Kelly Krikhely, MS, told POPSUGAR, adding that broth-based soups are recommended since creamy soups tend to be filled with calories and can actually impede your efforts.
But it's not just a dietitian-recommended hack; there's science to prove this premeal order. A study out of Penn State found that when a group of participants ate a first course of soup before their entrée, they ate 20 percent fewer calories (with the soup and entrée) compared to when they didn't eat the soup beforehand.
In addition to filling the volume in your stomach, broth-based soups are hydrating, which can satiate your thirst cue, explained Haley Hughes, MS, RD, CDE, who added that certain broth-based soups are a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. But be mindful of the kind of broth-based soup you're ordering; recipes featuring large amounts of rice, noodles, or potatoes can be calorie bombs, Kelly warned.
"The trick is to make sure you're picking a broth-based soup that is chock-full of vegetables that will not only fill you up but keep you satisfied for longer," Kelly said, adding that eating a fiber-filled salad with tons of veggies and a light dressing beforehand serves the same purpose.
And while this trick is handy at restaurants, you can also implement it at home. If you don't have time to whip up a broth-based soup at home, you can even sip on bone broth before a meal to help increase satiety. (To make your own bone broth, check out our recipe.) After all, some restaurant soups can be filled with sodium, which will make you bloated and make you feel worse the next day. But if you're really starving when you get to a restaurant, swap out the bread and butter with a veggie-packed soup starter. Bonus points if you look up the nutrition info beforehand to see how much sodium it contains.
Why This Cardiologist Doesn't Track Heart Rate - and Says You Don't Need to, Either
The rise of fitness trackers and classes that use them have changed the game in the fitness world, making us more aware of how much we move, sleep, stand, and walk. And many new trackers, from Fitbits to Apple Watches, have added a new feature: a heart rate monitor, which lets you track your resting heart rate, check out how high it goes during exercise, and watch how it changes over time as you get more fit.
Those stats are interesting, but we wanted to know how useful heart rate information actually is, especially during a workout. POPSUGAR talked to Ethan Weiss, MD, a cardiologist and associate professor at UC San Francisco, and what he had to say was surprising. "I don't recommend anyone really check their heart rate or follow it for anything other than curiosity," Dr. Weiss said. That's because heart rate can be pretty arbitrary, he says, and can differ greatly between people depending on fitness level. Unless you have a heart condition, you're fine ignoring those numbers, and you might even be better off.
Why Tracking Your Heart Rate Isn't That Useful
One thing that heart rate is closely connected to is your fitness level. "There is a strong correlation between how fit you are and how much your heart rate responds to exercise," Dr. Weiss said. He acknowledged that it can be interesting to watch your heart rate adapt as you get more fit but that it still isn't ultimately that useful.
Related: A Cardiologist Tells Us the Worst Thing For Heart Health
As an example, Dr. Weiss said, "Let's say I did a workout and my heart rate went from, say, 60 to 120 beats per minute in four minutes. Then, if I got myself in shape, maybe that would change to be 60 to 100 beats per minute in 20 minutes." You're increasing your stamina and cardiovascular fitness, so your heart doesn't have to work quite as hard during these tough workouts. That's interesting to know, he said, "but again, there's nothing actionable about that. It's more of a curiosity." In general, there are more useful things to pay attention to.
What You Should Track During Workouts
Dr. Weiss said that he doesn't track his heart rate, not during exercise or rest. "I encourage people to pay more attention to how they feel and to listen to their bodies," he said. "If your body tells you this is too much, don't push to the point of being exhausted." This holds especially true for people who are just starting to get in shape; he said monitoring your heart rate that closely can be a distraction more than anything, drawing you away from your body's natural exhaustion cues.
It can be hard to pick up on those, too, so really pay attention to your body's reactions and fatigue level the next time you're working out. It can be helpful to track or even write down those sensations as a way to gauge your rate of perceived exhaustion (RPE). Here's a chart with some helpful cues to get you started, like noticing how fast you're breathing and whether or not you could hold a conversation.

The main takeaway here is that unless you have a heart condition, you shouldn't stress too much over your heart rate. For the most part, your body can tell you all you need to know: when you're pushing too hard, when you're comfortable, and when you can take things up a notch. Use your fitness tracker to follow other metrics, like steps, stairs, or weight, and let your heart do its thing.

Get a Strong and Sculpted Back and Butt With This Trainer's 7-Move Workout
There are a lot of things to pay attention to when it comes to creating a good workout. You've got to have a goal (build muscle, improve muscular endurance, max strength), your rep and set scheme needs to align with that goal, and you've got to do the right exercises. It's also important to make sure that, in general, you work all of your muscles for symmetry and balance instead of sticking to the same four exercises all of the time.
One group of muscles that deserves a lot more love and attention is the posterior chain. Not sure what that is? It's all the muscles that make up the back of your body, such as your glutes, hamstrings, and back muscles. It's easy to focus on your mirror muscles (the ones you can see in the gym mirrors, like your quadriceps and biceps), but balance is key. To help you work your posterior chain, I created this seven-move muscle-building workout. I tested it out first and was surprised by how sore it left me. Continue reading if you're ready to give it a shot.

Everybody Is Different, but Here's About How Long It Generally Takes to Lose 10 Pounds
Losing 10 pounds is a solid feat: whether you have 15 or 50 pounds to lose, getting started on your weight-loss journey and shedding that first 10 can be the hardest. And while many people would like to lose those 10 pounds as quickly as possible, crash diets and deprivation aren't effective or healthy long-term strategies.
In order to lose weight and keep it off, it's best to do it in a slow and steady manner. Still, you can lose 10 pounds in a matter of weeks and be well on your way to achieving your weight-loss goals. We spoke to registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, who explained what you can realistically expect if you're trying to lose 10 pounds.
How Long Does It Take to Lose 10 Pounds?
Jim said a healthy weight loss is considered safe at a rate of one to two pounds a week. More realistically, people can expect to lose about half a pound to two pounds a week. If you have more weight to lose (such as 100 pounds or more), you may lose the initial weight at a quicker rate. But the general population can expect to lose about half a pound to two pounds a week. Any more than that and you are at risk of losing lean muscle mass as well as fat, which can wreak havoc on your metabolism.
With that in mind, a weight loss of 10 pounds could take as little as five weeks or as much as 20 weeks (about five months). One factor could be your metabolism, or the number of calories your body burns in a unit of time. Everybody is different; some may lose 10 pounds in five weeks, no problem, while others may ebb and flow their way to a 10-pound weight loss over the course of a few months. It's important to remember that other lifestyle factors also play a role, like sleep and stress.
How to Lose 10 Pounds
OK, so you know how long it will take you to lose the 10 pounds, but how exactly do you achieve it? Ultimately, Jim said losing weight is about burning more calories than you take in. You can do this by eating in a healthy calorie deficit, burning calories, or a combination of both (which is the method he recommends). As for how many calories to eat in a day, that all depends.
"Calorie needs are highly individualized and vary from person to person based on factors such as current weight, height, and activity level," Jim said. "It would be impossible to suggest one calorie goal that would meet everyone's needs." If you can, meet with a registered dietitian who can help create a healthy meal plan for you and assess your goals. If not, you can use this formula to figure out about how many calories you need to eat in a day to lose weight.
A calorie deficit of 500 calories a day will lead to a weight loss of about a pound a week. Just make sure you are still hitting your nutritional needs and don't go below 1,200 calories a day for women; doing so will start to slow down your metabolism, not to mention deprive you of essential vitamins and nutrients. And before you embark on any weight-loss or fitness journey, consult with your doctor.
Chiseled Arms and Legs, I'm Coming For Ya! All You Need Is This 20-Minute Dumbbell Workout
Let the soreness begin! If strong arms and toned legs are one of your goals, grab a pair of dumbbells - this workout is gonna kick your butt (and your arms and legs!). You can do this workout anywhere, any time, as long as you have your trusty set of dumbbells and 20 minutes.
To make this workout even more effective, Jade Jenny, head CrossFit coach and owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit, said to have two sets of dumbbells on hand (one medium and one heavy), so you can keep the loading more balanced since some moves will be easier for you.
The repetition of similar exercises is meant to increase your physical and mental endurance, and it's up to you how hard you want to make this workout. For the ultimate challenge, use heavier weights and push your pace. I did this workout in CrossFit and loved it because it was quick and fun and my arms and legs were sore the next couple of days.

US Women's Soccer Is Suing the US Soccer Federation Over Gender Discrimination
Source: Getty / Omar Vega
The whole US Women's Soccer team sued the US Soccer Federation on Friday, The New York Times reports. The lawsuit appears to be the culmination of years-long gender discrimination by the US Soccer Federation (USSF), the official governing body that employs both the Women's National Soccer Team and the Men's National Soccer Team. All 28 members of the women's team, including Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Becky Sauerbrunn, listed their names in the lawsuit and are requesting class-action status. The New York Times shared the full lawsuit, which provides in-depth details and specific examples of discrimination based on gender throughout several years.
"Despite the fact that female and male players are called upon to perform the same job responsibilities on their teams and participate in international competitions for their single common employer, the USSF, the female players have been consistently paid less money than their male counterparts. This is true even though their performance has been superior to that of the male players - with the female players, in contrast to male players, becoming world champions," the document states.
Source: Getty / Mike Ehrmann
The team won the World Cup most recently in 2015, bringing its total number of World Cup wins to an impressive three. Despite the team's major successes and the fact that the terms in the women's and men's team contracts are the same (playing on the same size field, using the same size ball, etc.), they have consistently been paid less. The lawsuit even states that in 2017, Carlos Cordeiro, president of USSF, said "Our women's teams should be respected and valued as much as our men's teams, but our female players have not been treated equally."
In fact, the Women's National Team specifies instances in which they worked more than the Men's National Team. "For example, from 2015 through 2018, the WNT played nineteen more games than the MNT played over that same period of time. As the MNT averaged approximately seventeen games per year in that time frame, the WNT played the equivalent of more than one additional MNT calendar year season from 2015 through 2018," another part of the lawsuit reads.
There's a lot to unpack in the lengthy lawsuit, but reading it will definitely make you feel empowered (and annoyed). The pay disparities for equal (and sometimes more) work undeniably need to be addressed. All in all, the suit plain and simply states, "The USSF has no legitimate, non-discriminatory reason for this gross disparity in pay, nor can it be explained away by any bona fide seniority, merit, or incentive system or any other factor other than sex."

Which Exercises Are Actually Cardio? A Trainer Clears It Up
Common exercise terms can get thrown around a lot before you realize you don't actually know what they mean. And when deciding on a workout class or video to do, getting confused on the terminology might lead you to a workout you're not ready for or just don't want to do. Let's start with a common one: cardio. What exactly is it, and which exercises qualify? We talked to Ashley Kelly, NASM, a certified personal trainer at Bach in New York City and 2016 Olympian in track and field, to clear things up.
What Is Cardio?
The main focus of cardio is to get your heart rate up and keep it there. "In a nutshell, it's the physical training of the lungs, heart, and blood vessels," Ashley told POPSUGAR. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), cardio is rhythmic and continuous exercise that uses your large muscle groups to get your blood pumping. That rhythmic, continuous nature is important. "You're training your heart rate at a steady rate during cardio," Ashley said, instead of pushing it up and letting it drop. The exercise itself doesn't matter as much as that high, steady heart rate; as long as you have that, Ashley said, you're doing cardio. And if this sounds a lot like aerobics, you're right - they're the same thing, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
What Are Examples of Cardio Exercises?
You can get cardio training with any kind of exercise that brings up your heart rate, Ashley said. Classic cardio exercises, though - the ones that trainers and other fitness professionals often refer to as cardio - are things like . . .
- Walking
- Running
- Biking
- Rowing
- Climbing stairs steadily
- Dance cardio
As for how often you should be doing cardio, the ACSM recommends 150 minutes every week, which you can split up into 30 minutes, five days a week.
Cardio has numerous benefits, from burning fat and preventing disease to upping your mood. So now that you know exactly what it is and which exercises qualify, hop on the treadmill, start pedaling in a Spin class, or hit your neighborhood sidewalks - whatever you feel like to get your heart pumping.
Tea Tree Oil: Not So Good For Athlete's Foot, According to a Podiatrist
Tea tree oil is used for a lot of things: to clear acne, to repel bugs, to cure bites, cuts, and bruises . . . the list goes on, and it's even Meghan Markle-approved (she calls it a "cure-all"). Though this oil can soothe dry, itchy skin, when it comes to treating athlete's foot, an infection caused by fungus, it's not as effective as you'd think. We spoke to Miguel Cunha, founder of Gotham Footcare, about why.
Can You Treat Athlete's Foot With Tea Tree Oil?
Dr. Cunha said that tea tree oil may be somewhat effective at reducing itching, scaling, swelling, and burning caused by athlete's foot when applied twice a day. But, he advised, it's not as effective as actual antifungal medication, and it may take several months to see progress if you just stick to the oil. "Tea tree oil is only 60 percent effective," he said.
How to Properly Treat Athlete's Foot
Dr. Cunha explained that the best way to treat an infection is to first determine whether it's bacterial or fungal. "Most infections that present with scaliness and itchiness to the bottom of the foot and in between the toes are a result of athlete's foot," he said. Before you go to a doctor, you can try over-the-counter antifungal medication for athlete's foot for two to three weeks, but if the condition doesn't improve, then you'll need a prescription-strength medicine.
"It's worth pointing out that most people tend to assume their feet are just dry or scaly when they actually suffer from athlete's foot," Dr. Cunha noted. "They typically just slather their foot in lotion, thinking this will solve the problem, but they aren't treating the fungus. That means the infection could get worse and travel to your nail." In the event that it does travel up to your nails, you might need an antifungal oral medication. Other tips he gave us include spraying Lysol on your shoes regularly and avoiding walking barefoot at public pools and in gym locker rooms (seriously, don't do it!). So, sure, use tea tree oil to your heart's content, but if you're looking for an effective treatment for athlete's foot, this podiatrist wants you to choose medication specific to that infection, not just for dry skin.
