X-Men: Dark Phoenix Says a Tragic Goodbye to a Major Character
Spoilers for X-Men: Dark Phoenix are lurking below, FYI.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix had a daunting task to accomplish in its 113-minute runtime - wrap up the storylines of all the major characters in satisfying enough ways, while still leaving room for future spinoffs. (Now that Disney has control of both Marvel and 20th Century Fox, we know that's inevitable, right?) While the film does manage to give the arcs of characters like Hank/Beast and Erik/Magneto reasonable conclusions, others are left more ambiguous. And in the case of one mutant in particular, her arc is extinguished altogether - unfortunately Raven, aka Mystique, doesn't make it out of Dark Phoenix alive.
The character has undergone an admirable inner transformation, proving that her shape-shifting abilities extend beyond her appearance. Raven, played by Jennifer Lawrence since 2011's X-Men: First Class, has evolved from a cynical potential villain into a woman full of empathy for her fellow mutants, and who is deeply protective of the younger students at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. It's that guardian-like quality that actually gets her into trouble in Dark Phoenix.
The film begins with Xavier sending the team up to space to rescue an American space shuttle that's in trouble. They manage to get almost all the astronauts off the ship and back on their own save for one, so with time running out, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Kurt (Kodi Smit-McPhee) teleport over to try to pull the last man out of the wreckage before a large, churning ball of energy can destroy it.
Kurt succeeds in saving the last astronaut thanks to Jean holding the ship together with her telekinetic powers, but he's not able to grab Jean in time - the Phoenix Force slams into her, but rather than disintegrating like the ship around her, her body absorbs it. She passes out after the explosion, but soon wakes up feeling better than ever. Though the Phoenix Force makes her stronger and almost all-powerful, she also discovers that she's incredibly volatile and unable to control herself. It's this unstable quality of her new powers that leads to the death of Raven/Mystique.
After an outburst at a party leaves some of her friends wounded (and scared of her), Jean decides to run away from the school to keep everyone safe. She also decides to track down the father she thought was dead all this time, flying straight to his house. Unfortunately, once she gets there and introduces herself, it becomes clear that he willingly handed Jean over to Charles a decade earlier because he didn't want her, and still blames her for her mother's tragic death.
This, unsurprisingly, pisses Jean the f*ck off, and she has one of her volatile outbursts. Before she can decimate her father's house, however, the X-Men arrive to stop her and bring her home. She refuses, still angry that Charles kept the existence of her father from her all these years, flipping over police cars and tossing her friends around in the process. Before Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) can shoot her with a tranquilizer, Raven steps into the fray to try to calm Jean down.
Raven is able to make Jean float back down to earth, speaking to her in calming tones and reminding her that they're family, but the Phoenix Force coursing through Jean's veins is too much to withstand. Jean screams, letting loose a giant burst of energy that sends everyone flying backwards. Sadly when Raven is sent careening through the air, she lands on some of the wreckage from Jean's dad's house, impaling her.
Jean, horrified, flies away before she can destroy anyone else. Hank rushes over, and sobs over Raven's body as she tries to choke out one final "I love you." But it's too late - Raven is dead.
Team X-Men later holds a somber funeral for their fallen friend in the rain, but ultimately Raven's death proves to be a tipping point, shattering the bonds of the group. Hank, heartbroken and furious over Charles' perceived inaction toward Jean, leaves the school to team up with Magneto and kill the Dark Phoenix.
In the end, of course, Jean sacrifices herself to save everyone (basically becoming a god) and the X-Men are able to put aside their differences and move forward. Raven might not be around to see Hank in charge of the new school, which is renamed the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters, but we imagine that it's a future she would've been proud of.

Confused About The Handmaid's Tale's Timeline? Here's How Many Years Have Passed
With three seasons, The Handmaid's Tale has been on Hulu for over two years, but how long has the totalitarian Republic of Gilead actually been in place? The number that we've calculated is at least five years, give or take. Using title cards, information about the Handmaids' children, and other hints sprinkled throughout the show, here's how we crunched the numbers.

How Many Years Has It Been Since June and Emily Became Handmaids on The Handmaid's Tale?
At the series' start, we know that June has been captive for three years because of a title card in episode seven of season one that introduces her husband Luke's life after he gets to Canada. While June has been in the world of Gilead for around three years, she hasn't been with the Waterfords the entire time. In the pilot episode, Serena Joy says that this is June's second posting. In Margaret Atwood's book, an assignment lasts about two years. We can assume that June spent roughly two years at her last family and about a year or less at the Red Center training to be a Handmaid.
We can confirm Gilead's age by looking at Emily, whose timeline runs close to that of June's. In a flashback to her former life, we learn that Emily's son Oliver is 2 years old when her family tries to cross the border to Canada after the attacks in Washington. While Emily's wife and child are able to get to Canada, Emily isn't able to since her marriage is declared forbidden. We can assume that soon after this incident, Gilead captures her. When she meets June in the first season, her son Oliver turns 5 years old. Like June, she's been around for three years.
Let's fast forward to when Emily's at Commander Lawrence and just about to leave Gilead in the season two finale. She tells June that Oliver is about to turn 7. This lets us know that Gilead has been sanctioning captures for at least five years and that it's been two years since June first worked for the Waterfords.

What Year Is It on Season 3 of The Handmaid's Tale?
What about the actual dates attached to these events? Well, it wouldn't be too far a stretch to say that the series is happening in our current time, 2019. When June stays in the old Boston Globe building, a newspaper prop reveals that the bombing and gunning during the President's Day Massacre happened in September 2014. Orchestrated by Gilead's Sons of Jacob, the massacre killed high-ranking officials and civilians. Following the attack, the terrorist group dismantled American democracy, snuffing out the Constitution and declaring martial law. Add five years, and we're in 2019.
Since Gilead has been in the works for a while, it probably didn't take the fundamentalist organization too long to take over the United States. Still, while the show implies that Gilead has only been in power for five years, the developments (costumes, ranks, customs, etc.) look as though they'd take decades to implement. Call it TV magic.

Mindy Kaling Shakes Up the Writers' Room in This Exclusive Featurette From Late Night
Mindy Kaling might be known for her devotion to the romantic-comedy genre, but her latest film, Late Night, is more an ode to the importance of hard work than it necessarily is to romance. Kaling, who wrote the screenplay, stars as Molly Patel, an aspiring comedy writer who's hired by legendary late-night host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) to give her show some much-needed adjustments and hopefully save her career in the process.
"She's a big dreamer who wants to work in late-night television, and I really identified with that part of the character," Kaling said in our exclusive featurette from Late Night, above. "I always used to dream about what it would be like to write jokes for someone like David Letterman, and how it must be the best job in the whole world."
As Molly soon discovers, working for Katherine isn't a cake walk since she has to find her place in a writer's room packed with white men who aren't exactly thrilled by her addition to their space. "Molly's both made to feel like she's a token because she's a woman, and also because she's Indian. These are things I have felt vividly in my career," Kaling explained.
After making a splash at Sundance earlier this year, Late Night opened in select theaters on June 7 and is set for a wide release on June 14. Watch our exclusive clip, then make sure you check out the film for yourself!

The US Women's Soccer Team Has Already Broken Records at the World Cup - Here's How
The US Women's National Soccer Team started the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup with a record-breaking game against Thailand in Paris. The historic run ended with a stunning 13-0 victory, but that result is not the only thing that will leave your jaw on the floor. Here's what the team has racked up so far.
Alex Morgan Scored the Most Individual Goals in a Single Women's World Cup Game
Forward Alex Morgan, one of USWNT's biggest stars, set an individual record in the match against Thailand. Over the course of the team's huge victory, Morgan personally scored five goals. That enormous achievement ties the record for most goals scored in a single game - the last woman to achieve that feat was Michelle Akers, who set the record during a 1991 match against Chinese Taipei. Currently, Morgan has scored more goals than any other player in the tournament - and more goals, on her own, than any team overall (aside from her own team).
In a postgame interview with Fox Sports, Morgan was at a loss for words regarding her historic achievement. "It's incredible, I don't know. I'm speechless," she said. "The ball just bounced my way tonight and I'm so thankful."
The USA's 13-0 Win Against Thailand Marked the Highest Margin of Victory in a Soccer Game
By the end of the blowout victory, the US women had outscored their Thai opponents 13-0. That 13-point margin of victory is not only a record for the women's tournament, but a FIFA world record. It became the biggest margin of victory in history!
The last time that the US and Thailand met up, in the 2015 tournament, the American women also scored a big victory of 8-0, but it's nothing compared to the 2019 game's margin. Prior to that game, the biggest margin of victory was Germany's 11-0 win over Argentina in the 2007 men's World Cup.
The US Women's Soccer Team Scored the Most Goals in a Single Game in History
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Team USA's 13 goals also set an overall record for most goals scored in a single match. That's not just a record for women's soccer, but for soccer altogether: no other team, men's or women's, has ever scored 13 goals in a World Cup match before!
"We really just came into the game really wanting to showcase ourselves," Morgan added to Fox Sports. "Every goal matters in this tournament and that's what we were working on." We can't wait to see what else the women of US soccer do as they continue their journey at the 2019 Women's World Cup.

This Stunning Hotel in Colombia Has Suspended Nets Outside the Rooms For the Ultimate View
After seeing pictures of the stunning Refugio La Roca Hotel in Colombia, you'll add it to your travel bucket list ASAP. It's the ideal place for being one with nature and giving your body a reset while also relishing in the comfort of a hotel with an incredible view. The hotel isn't exactly a hidden gem but isn't overbooked for months either; one Trip Advisor reviewer called it a "tiny bit of luxury in the middle of the wild."
Each room at Refugio La Roca is different, from the one called "the cloud" to the eco-friendly "ecottage," but the Ritakuwa room has our attention for one very eye-catching reason: the net suspended high above the mountains outside of the room where you can sit and really connect to the outdoors. "Ritakuwa is a room built with an iron structure, glass walls, rustic wood floor, and a palm roof. Its bathroom is open towards the canyon with stone walls and gardens that serve as natural curtains," the site's description reads. Um, yeah, I'm sold.
With a nice restaurant, no TVs (remember, it's relaxing), and unmatched views, Refugio La Roca is a stellar getaway destination. It's close to rock climbing if that's your thing, but you could also spend the entire day lying on the suspended net "balcony," reading, drinking coffee, and doing nothing. No judgment.

Jon Stewart Blasts a "Nearly Empty Congress" For Inaction on Behalf of 9/11 First Responders
Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart took members of Congress to task on Tuesday over health care for 9/11 first responders. Many members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties were not present for the bill hearing - a "shameful" failure, according to Stewart.
"As I sit here today, I can't help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process that getting health care and benefits for 9/11 first responders has come to. Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders, and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress. Sick and dying, they brought themselves down here to speak to no one," Stewart said, while testifying for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. In February, the fund's special master revealed payouts would be cut by 50 to 70 percent to ensure all claimants are paid before the fund expires in 2020. Stewart is fighting for permanent funding of the program.
"More of these men and women are going to get sick and they're going to die, and I'm awfully tired of hearing this is a 'New York issue.'"
"It's an embarrassment to the country and it is a stain on this institution. And you should be ashamed of yourselves for those that aren't here. But you won't be, because accountability doesn't appear to be something that occurs in this chamber," he continued.
Stewart is a staunch advocate for the men and women who responded to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in NYC. He delivered his passionate and emotional speech to about half of the 14-member subcommittee, reminding the lawmakers that the responders who showed up for the hearing "are not here for themselves." They attended on behalf of their colleagues who battle health complications, like cancer.
"There is not a person here, there is not an empty chair on that stage that didn't tweet out 'Never forget the heroes of 9/11,'" Stewart said, addressing the lawmakers. "Your indifference cost these men and women their most important commodity - time! It's the one thing they're running out of."
"More of these men and women are going to get sick and they're going to die, and I'm awfully tired of hearing this is a 'New York issue,'" he continued. "Al-Qaeda didn't shout 'Death to Tribeca.' They attacked America."

Selena Gomez's Feathered Minidress Will Make You Say, "If You're a Bird, I'm a Bird"
Selena Gomez showed up to The Dead Don't Die premiere in a killer outfit - pun intended. After previewing the movie at Cannes Film Festival last month, the 26-year-old actress arrived at the NYC event in a black Celine minidress and turned the red carpet into her personal runway.
Her babydoll style LBD looked just as comfortable as it does fashionable. The $15,900 dress featured off-the-shoulder feathered sleeves, a tiered bodice, and a flowing skirt. Selena tied her chic ensemble together with peep toe heels, dangling earrings, and a couple of sparkling rings. Ahead, see her look from all angles and then reflect on her glamorous red carpet looks from over the years.
Elton John and Taron Egerton's Live Performance of "Your Song" Is a Gift, Truly
You can tell everybody that we never recovered from Elton John and Taron Egerton's surprise "Your Song" duet. The two performed John's famous tune together as part of his farewell tour stop in Brighton on June 9. You'd think we'd be emotionally prepared to see the duo sing together after their "Rocketman" and "Tiny Dancer" renditions, but alas, we're still taken by surprise when they belt out the classics.
This song specifically holds a special place in Egerton's heart, and not only because of his Rocketman role. He sang "Your Song" as an audition piece to get into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art when he was 19, according to Yahoo! Entertainment. His opportunity to play John brought him full circle, and it's a tender fact to remember each time they share the stage together.
John himself shared a clip of the performance on Instagram, writing, "Last night was a show I'll never forget. Taron, you wowed the crowd and also the world with your role in #Rocketman." Watch their full performance above, and then check out all the dazzling songs featured on the stellar Rocketman soundtrack.

I Stopped Drinking For 30 Days, and It Felt So Good That I'm Choosing to Change My Habits
To be clear, I enjoy having a drink with friends as much as anyone else. For most 20-somethings, alcohol is the common denominator in just about any event on your social calendar. So when I first decided to give it up for a month, I was more worried about navigating after-work happy hours and dinner plans than I was about how my body would feel during the adjustment.
Still, I felt like I needed to step away from it, to quit living out my life on social media and take some time to realign. By the end of those four weeks, I could confidently ask for water at the bar and I had discovered new, booze-free ways to hang with friends, whether that was seeing a movie or going for an early morning hike. More importantly, I felt great - here's why.
I Didn't Lose Weight, but I Wasn't as Bloated
While the number on the scale didn't change, my stomach was noticeably flatter, and my face wasn't puffy like it usually is the morning after a night of drinking. These changes prompted me to eat healthier, too, because I thought so much more about what I was putting into my body. Based on the improvements I saw in just 30 days, and the way my habits shifted, I'd be curious what would happen if I gave up alcohol for, say, six months.
I Became a Morning Person
It wasn't uncommon for me to wake up, go to the gym, run errands, and arrive back at home before noon, only to get Snapchats from friends who were still hungover in bed at 2 p.m. I was no longer hiding from the sun under my sheets, and it felt great. I easily woke up before 9 a.m., even on weekends, feeling rested and ready to tackle the day.
I Felt Sharper
Alcohol is a way to let loose and escape from the world, but when I've had too much, my mind becomes a pinball machine, with thoughts bouncing from one place to another. I start questioning everything, and nothing seems to make sense. After giving it up, I was more efficient and hyperfocused than ever. I made some big decisions and got a lot done even on the weekends, instead of lounging on my couch, nursing a hangover and binge-watching Schitt's Creek.
After a month, I'm not ready to stop drinking alcohol completely - I still like cracking open a cold one, and there are health benefits to drinking - but I'm shifting my habits so it's a variable in my social life instead of a constant. I know now how important it is to strike that balance.
A Trainer Says This Is the Biggest Difference Between a Strong Core and a 6-Pack
Abs are one of those things people love to obsess about. Whether it's talking about Halle Berry's intense ab workouts (yes, I'm guilty) or J Lo's ab workouts (guilty again), there's a greater conversation about abs to be had.
First and foremost, abs are one of the most important group of muscles you have - seriously. I know a lot of people only care about how to get their abs to show and how to get a six-pack, but your abs are way more important than looking good for the 'gram.
Having a strong core can prevent back pain, is essential for stabilizing your spine, and will help you perform explosive movements like sprinting and jumping better. You don't have to memorize this, but the muscles that make up your core are the internal obliques (they help with twisting), external obliques (they, too, help with twisting), transverse abdominis (a deep layer of the core that acts like a girdle), rectus abdominis (the six-pack muscles), and the erector spinae (muscles that help straighten the back).
These muscles protect your organs and are activated every time you laugh, sneeze, and have bowel movements. They also help you maintain an erect posture. Conversely, having a six-pack just means you have a six-pack.
While I think it's 100-percent OK to want to see your abs and get a six-, 10-, or even 12-pack, I don't think it should be your main focus. Why? Because a six-pack isn't synonymous with having a strong core. A six-pack is the result of genetics, clean eating, and a body-fat percentage that's low enough for your abs to show.
To get a strong core, you need to focus on strengthening all the muscles of your abs (scroll back up if you can't remember them). There are a lot of moves I love that target the core, but I recommend focusing on exercises like the side plank, pallof presses, deadlifts, low-to-high woodchops, and the farmer's carry.
Ahead, you'll find an extensive list of exercises I also recommend adding to your workouts. Be sure to mix them up so that you are targeting all the muscles of your core equally. FYI: this is not a workout. Instead, pick three to five moves to make a quick core workout. You can also follow this four-week ab workout plan. Having a six-pack is nice, but having a strong core is better! Check out some of my favorite ab strengthening moves ahead.
