The Sweet and Funny True Story That Inspired Blinded by the Light
The latest jukebox musical is Blinded by the Light, and you might be surprised to learn that the Bruce Springsteen tribute is based on a true story! Set in the 1980s and telling the story of a British Pakistani teen who becomes a Springsteen fan, it's closely based on the life of writer Sarfraz Manzoor, as well as some of the memories of his friend and director, Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha.
To get to Blinded by the Light, we have to go through Greetings From Bury Park, Manzoor's autobiographical novel. In the novel, he describes how he grew up feeling like a misfit, but became inspired to begin writing his own lyrics and poetry after being introduced to Springsteen's music. The film portrays a somewhat fictionalized version of Manzoor's memories, taking creative liberties where necessary.
"I really wanted it to be both fictional but also true at the same time," Manzoor told Refinery29. A few of the changes involved in adapting his real story for the screen included adding a love interest character (which he jokingly admits didn't exist in his real high-school life) and ramping up the tension between his character and the character of his father. Although Manzoor, like many teenagers, clashed with his parents, his father didn't actually have a problem with him buying tickets to see Springsteen.
"The reason [we added that moment] is I had loads of issues with my dad, but rather than making them all kind of concentrated, we just crystallized it into a single moment," he explained in his Refinery29 interview. The overarching plot of the movie, though, in which the Manzoor character gains confidence in himself through his experiences with Springsteen's music, is true to life.
There's one fun detail in the movie that is simultaneously true to life and not true to life, Manzoor explained. The name of "his" character in the film is Javed, and from a certain perspective, that's Manzoor's name too.
"The letter took quite a while to get to him, and by the time it got there, he said, 'Okay, so we're going to call him Sarfraz.' But in the time that it had taken the letters to get there and come back, my mom had already named me Javed; that's what my mom calls me now," he says. "So, he is me and he's not me."
Manzoor isn't the only member of the creative team whose life was deeply affected by Springsteen's music. Director Chadha tells CNN that she had similar experiences, and, in fact, their shared love for Springsteen is what brought her and Manzoor together years ago.
"The first time you see Bruce live it's a spiritual thing. The way he does his live sets, there's so much energy, but there's so much integrity about what he's saying, what his words are and how he introduces his songs," she said. "I was like, 'This is it, this man is just going to change my life . . . I was a hard-bitten fan and then I read an article by Sarfraz in one of the papers and I'm like, 'Oh my God, there's another Asian person that is into Springsteen. That's how we became friends."
Chadha even got to get Springsteen's blessing for the project when she seized a moment during a red carpet event.
"I went, 'Hi Bruce, my name is Gurinder, I did Bend It Like Beckham. I want to make a movie of this, please can you help us?' He sort of went, 'Sounds good.' And I thought, 'Oh my God, did that just happen?'"

If you're in the mood to watch a movie that stars a sexy guy, we get it, and what's even better is that Netflix gets it, too. The 2019 Netflix lineup has blessed us with some of the hottest eye candy that we've yet to see, so we did the dirty work and rounded up more than 80 movies that are available on Netflix that feature the most smoldering men around for a shameless movie night in. Some of these characters are being romantic, some are showing off their guns (and abs) in action movies, and some are pure evil (in a really hot way), but what they all have in common is, well, we want to jump their bones. We can't vouch for the quality of all these movies, but we can say that the actors starring in them are nothing short of sexy. Pass the remote . . .

Apparently, 45% of Americans Wear the Same Pair of Underwear For 2 Days or More
Today in things you wish you didn't know: a new survey shows that 45 percent of Americans wear the same pair of underwear for two days or longer. Meanwhile, 13 percent took things several steps further, admitting they'd worn the same pair for a week or more. No word on whether these respondents made use of the controversial "turn the underwear inside out" hack or just tossed them on right-side-in and fully embraced the "no-f*cks-given" lifestyle.
The survey of 1,000 Americans also revealed that men are 2.5 times more likely than women to wear the same underwear for more than a week. (Cue my "shocked" face.) Also, apparently 46 percent of Americans have pairs of underwear that are over a year old and 38 percent don't even know how old their underwear is. That might not seem like a big deal, until you consider that even laundered underwear is still teeming with bacteria, which is something fun to think about when you're getting dressed tomorrow. Underwear brand Tommy John, which ran the survey and released the results today, noted that underwear that's over a year old can also lead to health issues like UTIs, yeast infections, skin infections, and more.
So beyond throwing out (and maybe burning) all those ancient pairs of underwear in your drawers, the brand also recommended a few ways to take care of the pairs you're keeping around.
- Tumble-dry your underwear on low for half an hour after washing to minimize bacteria.
- If other members of your household are sick, don't wash your underwear in the same load.
- Don't wash contaminated underwear with other clothing or pairs.
- If other clothing contains or is stained by bodily fluids, wash it separately from your underwear.
We get it: sometimes laundry day hits before you're ready. Our advice: prepare for those emergencies ahead of time by grabbing a cheap five-pack of underwear the next time you're at Target. We don't think you'll regret it.

"Well, I'll tell you one thing, [there] better be a big, fat wedding," he said. "I think that's what we should give [fans] . . . I think now it's time to give them, after 20 years, what they want." After building up their romance throughout Gilmore Girls' entire seven-season run, Lorelai and Luke finally got married on the show's 2016 revival. The wedding, though, turned out to be a bit lackluster for some fans, as the couple ended up eloping in lieu of having a big celebration. Considering the amount of screen time their relationship got - with its many highs and lows - Patterson believes a memorable event is what fans deserve to see.
When asked about what Luke and Lorelai's wedding would ideally look like, the 60-year-old actor mentioned that it'd likely be "filled with drama, filled with laughs, filled with, you know, Miss Patty [forgetting] the dancers and then they [would have] to replace them with little children or dogs." He continued, "Something very cute and goes right to the heart. A community pulling together to make it all happen."
