The '00s Called to Let You Know That French Nails Are Back in Style
Bon Qui Qui had her nail art, but suburban housewives? They had the french manicure. Back in the early aughts, everyone who was anyone walked around with white-tipped nails - acrylics optional, but not required - until all of a sudden . . . they didn't. A few years later and the look was all but swept under the rug, dismissed for the next decade by many as "too cheesy."
Then suddenly, inexplicably, french nails traveled in time to 2018, showing up in blockbuster movies, red carpets, and even music videos. (Ocean's 8 and "Thank U, Next," anyone?) "Fashion has taken a '90s turn from influence, so of course the trends have returned from that era," said Elle, celebrity nail artist for LeChat. "I'm enjoying the new modern twists, maybe because it comes from my era. But how you approach the modern take is vital; the nail shape should be a ballerina, not a square."
Unsure how to do it yourself? Follow the lead of Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, and more ahead. But remember: "If it's not done right, it will become 'basic,'" Elle said, which - to steal a phrase from one particular country - is the opposite of très chic.
Kelly Clarkson Covered Sia's "Chandelier," and Now My Entire Body Is Covered in Goosebumps
Had I known NBC giving Kelly Clarkson her own talk show would basically mean daily concerts from the pop star, I would've begged the network to do it a long time ago. On Friday, The Voice judge hit the stage with another cover for her "Kellyoke" segment, this time belting out Sia's "Chandelier." Clarkson's soulful vocals give the upbeat track an edgy spin, and I'm not exaggerating when I say listening to it made me instantly sprout goosebumps all over my body. Check out her stunning interpretation of the song above, and then hear all the other covers Clarkson has slayed over the years.

I Finally Got the Bob Haircut You're Seeing Everywhere and Learned a Surprising Lesson
Unless you count the occasional pumpkin spice latte or my proclivity for a Euphoria binge, I don't typically succumb to peer pressure for trend's sake. I stuck to my measly four-step skincare routine despite the K-beauty boom, remained loyal to nude nail polish even with the return of the french manicure, and hadn't once considered hopping on the bob haircut bandwagon - despite nearly every celebrity (and their moms and cousins and . . . ) in the last year trying out the style.
Yet one day, over the weekend, when I was staring at my long hair in the mirror and wondering if that's what was elongating my oval face to the point of near-aardvark relation, I decided: it's time to cut it all off. Without a second thought, I booked an appointment at The Salon Project in NYC and stomped in two days later on a mission. "I'm dying to try the blunt bob trend," I told salon owner and veteran hairstylist Joel Warren, "but disclaimer: I have to be somewhere in 45 minutes."
I fully anticipated a "GTFO and come back later" with such a request, but instead, he laughed. "This is not a complicated haircut. With fine hair like yours, you'll be out in 30. I'll even show you a new way to style it."
And kids, that's exactly what he did. Six inches to the ground and half an hour later, plus a whole new hair routine punched into my Notes app, I'm a whole new person - and she doesn't look at all like a long-snout animal. See the full transformation (and some embarrassing photos of me for good measure) ahead.
This Little Girl Is Lying Through Her Teeth About "Homie Depot" Lipstick, and I'm Crying

Posted by Peter Sowell on Wednesday, August 28, 2019
Have you ever met a toddler who can really spin a story? Sometimes, they're more convincing than the world's greatest lawyers or writers. Such is the case with this young girl from Florida whose dad, Peter Sowell, caught her with lipstick on.
"Did you do anything in the bathroom?" he asked in a now-viral Facebook and Instagram video. His daughter tried to deny any of the pink color smeared across her face until finally she admitted she was wearing "yip tik." Where's it from, you might wonder? Oh, just "Homie Depot." Watch the full video above to see the cuteness ensue. We need to make a Home Depot stop ASAP to see their makeup selection - wink, wink.

Actress Natalia Reyes Is Terminating Latina Stereotypes on the Big Screen
Natalia Reyes is a Colombian actress with extensive experience in film, television, and theater. She's starred in many local Colombian TV shows including Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas, and international films such as Netflix's Pickpockets. Coming this November, you'll see her in Terminator: Dark Fate. This story was told to Maria G. Valdez and edited for length and clarity.
It's still hard to believe that this girl with big dreams from Colombia is getting ready for the whole press tour of a huge Hollywood movie.
I was born in Bogotá, Colombia into a middle class, hardworking, and loving family - the youngest of three children. When I was nine years old, I discovered a musical theater company and, as I was hyperactive, I auditioned and spent the following seven years of my life dancing, singing, acting, and touring all around.
It was such an amazing experience, and the perfect opportunity for me to decide that acting made me happy and I wanted that to be my life. I love theater, and being on stage or on set feels like being home. Thankfully, I always had the support of my family, and when I was 16, I started also doing TV shows and then movies.
After I graduated college, I decided to move to New York with only my savings to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute. I was there for two years when I completed the program, and then I moved back to Colombia to continue working as an actress. About four years ago, I moved to Cartagena and from there, I self-taped my audition for Terminator: Dark Fate. After a month of callbacks, I got it! The role has led me to even more exciting projects in the US.
De Colombia Para el Mundo
Life in Colombia was great. Growing up, it was a time of war there, but we were isolated from that in the cities. My family loves to travel, so we would always go to "safe places" around the country, discovering our own culture. I love the colors, the flavors, the nature of Colombia, and especially how kind Colombians are. I'm really proud of being Latina and to have salsa in my blood! It has given me the strength, the sense of humor, the talent, and the charisma to be where I am.
While my family and I traveled a lot domestically, we did do many trips to the US, which made transitioning to the US very smooth. I also had already lived in NYC when I went to Lee Strasberg, which helped me get situated now. I'm extremely grateful for all the opportunities the US has given me as well. It's unbelievable how big, organized, and multicultural this country is.
Breaking the Latina Mold in Hollywood
Unfortunately, I don't think there are enough quality roles for Latinas yet. We tend to be misrepresented and stereotyped, but I also think the world is changing and Hollywood is a reflection of that. Dani, my character in Terminator: Dark Fate, is far from those clichés. She's a smart, brave Latina on screen, and you'll feel proud of what she's capable of.
I do think this character has a big responsibility - I think it's opening a path for many other Latinas. This is just the beginning. We Latinx are growing as a community here, and we want to relate to and feel represented by the characters we see on screen. Dani does that. We have to prepare ourselves, be ready to perform different roles, to change stereotypes, to say "no" to roles that we think are a misrepresentation, and speak up.
From Undocumented to Congresswoman: Isela Blanc Looks Back at Her Past to Create a Better Future
Isela Blanc is a politician, activist, and Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives elected to represent District 26 in 2016. She came to the US as an undocumented minor and was granted citizenship thanks to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. She's the first formerly undocumented woman elected to the Arizona state legislature. This story was told to Maria G. Valdez and edited for length and clarity.
I am originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the oldest of four sisters. I moved to the United States when I was 6-and-a-half, with my family. I remember every moment of that move, leaving my house in Guadalajara, getting on the plane, landing in Los Angeles because my mom had some friends there, and staying with them for a few days. Then we moved from Los Angeles to Oregon.
In the first few years of my upbringing here in the US, I had no idea I was living in poverty because as long as I had a roof over my head and food on the table and the love of my family, I never felt it. From Oregon we moved to Illinois, then to Wisconsin, until we settled in Arizona. I was 10. We lived two blocks west of the Arizona state capitol, which, at that time, felt more destitute.
The Arizona She Once Knew
Growing up, I never feared having to come home and my parents not being there. I never feared driving on the street and having police pull us over and moving my parents to a detention center. On occasion, I would see an immigration van, and that would kind of make my arm hair stand up, but as long as you laid low, there was never this feeling that they were going to come after you.
I never feared driving on the street and having police pull us over and move my parents to a detention center.
Now I live in this state that had Sheriff Joe Arpaio pulling anyone over and asking people for their papers thanks to the Arizona Senate Bill 1070 that passed in 2010. Now I live in this state that has said to people like me that English is the only language; that if you speak something other than English, you have to be segregated in a different classroom. If you are not a US citizen or a resident, you don't have the privilege to go to the state university. Mexican-American studies were banned, because apparently if you are learning a different version of American history, it will cause kids of color to become radical.
This is the state that I have known over the last 20 years, a state that has reminded people like me that, to some level, we are slightly unworthy and incapable.
Getting Into Politics
I was just a concerned mom, aware of what was happening in my community. Aware of how we were creating specialized schools that were indirectly causing some form of segregation, and at that time, I just knew that what I was seeing was wrong, but I didn't have the words to describe it. I had friends that would ask me to run for the school board for years, and I would always say, "I'm not doing it." But I felt that I didn't have enough knowledge or smarts to be in such a position. I would never express it, but internally, I felt shame and embarrassment because I'd grown up in a community that reminded me, both directly and indirectly, of my unworthiness.
In 2006, I decided to help my former high school teacher who had been a city mayor and served in the state legislature to run against J.D. Hayworth, who at that time was my congressman and incredibly racist. I was knocking on doors, I was making phone calls, I was a really great volunteer, and that was the first time that I was involved. Then 2010 when SB 1070 passed, when the Mexican-American ban happened, it was the first time I wrote my state legislative representative. I never heard from them, and I was kind of devastated.
In 2012, I found myself helping an organization called the Dream Act Coalition to encourage people to vote. And here I was seeing these amazing young, Latinx leaders, which at the time I had no idea most of them were undocumented, and they were fighting for their livelihood in a state that denies them their existence as human beings. I was amazed by their spirit, and I decided that I wanted to learn more about campaigns because I wanted to be more involved.
I was acknowledging my fear, and fear was dictating the possibilities and opportunities.
Fast forward three years and I was at this training called the New American Leaders Project. They connect with first- and second-generation Americans with immigrant stories, and they teach us how to tell our story. I was there because I was interested in learning about campaigning. I had no idea it was a candidate training. That's how naive I was. But Sayu Bhojwani, the founder and president of New American Leaders, saw a spark in me and encouraged me. She said, "I want to see you in DC in November. You need to run. Run for school board." I ended up getting asked to run for the Arizona state house. It took me three full weeks to decide, until it hit me that I was acknowledging my fear, and fear was dictating the possibilities and opportunities.
Encouraging Diverse Representation
Whether you decide to run for public office or not, we need people to start entering these spaces because we need to ensure that a different perspective is always provided. Our experiences and how we have experienced education, our community, as well as our views, are so important. As a former undocumented person who grew up in poverty and knows how important the education system is for a poor kid like me, I'm going to fight for those things.
It's OK to look back and see the road that we have traveled and really understand everything that we have overcome to be where we are.
As a Mexican woman growing up in a very modest household, I was taught that if you fall, you just get up and don't look back, but it's OK to look back and see the road that we have traveled and really understand everything that we have overcome to be where we are.
Our experiences have shaped and molded us, and those perspectives and a willingness to have an open heart and an open mind and to be thoughtful thinkers are so necessary in spaces like Congress. It is so incredibly, vastly important that we start to see ourselves in those positions; whether it is as a congressman or somebody who is doing something with policy, we need a diverse representation.
I Used to Be Ashamed of My Heritage, Until I Realized It's the Most Beautiful Thing I Have
My friends in the United States recognize me as Latina, but to my friends in the Dominican Republic, I'm always La Gringa. I was born in New York, automatically granted citizenship, and immediately after, my mom packed everything and moved back to the Dominican Republic - where she's from - with me. She had only been in New York for less than a year before I was born, and finding herself alone with a baby, in a city where she didn't know anyone, proved to be too much for her.
I called the DR home for the first five years of my life. Then, in 1999, my mom decided to give up the life she knew in order to try to provide me with opportunities she never had. We were on our way back to New York, this time Great Neck, Long Island, where I would enroll in school.
It was just me and my mom. We were in a completely different environment than we were used to. I didn't speak a word of English when I moved here, and my mom was in the process of relearning. My elementary school was predominantly white, so making friends was difficult at the beginning. I remember feeling a strong sense of embarrassment for being the only Hispanic in my class. I felt different, like an outsider, especially when it came to characteristics like my curly hair. I remember kids would even make fun of me for it sometimes.
"Through middle school and high school, kids would refer to me as 'Maria,' not even bothering to learn my real name, or make fun of me for speaking Spanish."
It was difficult growing up with a single mother who had to work long hours. She was working not only to provide for the two of us, but for our family in the Dominican Republic. We were always just trying to get by. I didn't have the same things as other kids around me, I even shared a room with my mom until I was in sixth grade, when she decided to move out of the US again.
This time I stayed in the country, but moved to Tampa, Florida with my dad. Things weren't much different in school. I always had to work harder than those around me to get by in class. Through middle school and high school, kids would refer to me as "Maria," not even bothering to learn my real name, or make fun of me for speaking Spanish. They never really saw it as bullying, but it was something that always made me feel bad about myself. I slowly stopped wearing my hair curly, always making sure it was pin straight so I had one less thing for kids to make fun of me for.
It took a tumor for me to stop letting people get to me, and embracing my true self unapologetically. I was diagnosed at 14, and although it was benign, my entire outlook on life changed after the surgery to remove it. I felt like I had been given a second chance and now I couldn't waste it. I started the process of learning to fully accept myself, and applied myself in school in order to make my dream of going to college in New York come true.
"I'm proud of my roots as they have empowered me to be a strong, determined, and independent woman."
I used to think being Latina was an impediment, but as I got older and my outlook on life changed, I realized how lucky I am to have such an amazing heritage that has solidified the person I am today. I have such a rich culture I can fall back on, another language I can speak, the many flavors I grew up tasting, music that's impossible not to dance to, and people who really embrace me and make me feel like family, even if it's just for a brief moment. I have learned to see this as an asset, and now I can confidently say I'm proud of my roots as they have empowered me to be a strong, determined, and independent woman.
The hardships I went through at the beginning of my childhood taught me a lot of things. I learned to always be accepting of people. I didn't always feel accepted by others, and this is something that has definitely stuck with me, encouraging me to always be welcoming towards others. I learned to give everything my all and never take an opportunity for granted. I was fortunate that my family decided to move to the United States in order for me to be where I am today - living and working in New York City. This has been and will continue to be a driving force throughout my life.
Better Times: Amy Winehouse's 25 Most Memorable Moments
Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27 in July 2011, but her spirit lives on in both her incredible singing voice and the recent, gripping documentary Amy. Despite her troubles with drugs and alcohol, Amy was a true talent - her music was raw, powerful, and (like the name of her debut album), frank. Her songs tugged at your heartstrings while also painting the picture of a deeply emotional and vulnerable soul, and since her tragic death, we've learned more and more about the woman behind the throaty vocals. We're looking back at some of Amy's best photos and performances in an effort to shed more light on the better times in her public life - keep reading to see them all now.
We Need a Moment to Process Alessia Cara's Amazing Impression of Amy Winehouse
Alessia Cara showed off her singing and impersonation skills on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in August, and we were blown away.
During the game Wheel of Musical Impressions, the 23-year-old singer was challenged to imitate other notable music artists while crooning a well-known nursery rhyme. While Jimmy tried his hand at singing "Baby Shark" à la Mick Jagger, Alessia totally nailed Billie Eilish and Amy Winehouse-esque renderings of "Pop Goes the Weasel" and "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." (She even gave Millie Bobby Brown's impersonation of Amy a run for its money). And those riffs? Amazing.
Watch Alessia boast her versatile vocals in the clip above!
It Doesn't Get Much Sexier Than This Dance Choreography Set to Normani's "Motivation"
My upcoming weekend plans, you ask? Attempting to memorize this high-energy dance routine set to Normani's "Motivation" (keyword: attempting). Millennium Dance Complex instructor Hamilton Evans is responsible for the slick choreography, which combines sexy and slow movements with high-energy booty pops and sassy hair flips galore. Do I have the coordination to look as good as these dancers while breakin' it down? Absolutely not. But am I going to try my darnedest to channel my inner Normani and slay every single step? Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, and More Ride the Romance Wave in Amazon's Modern Love Trailer
Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Andy Garcia, Catherine Keener, Dev Patel, and about one million more incredible actors are in for a roller coaster of emotions in Amazon's upcoming show Modern Love. The anthology series - inspired by The New York Times column that details (no shock here) modern love stories - will follow the romantic journeys of different characters.
The latest trailer, above, shows a glimpse of the anticipated personas as they appear to go through the ups and downs of intimate relationships. While Hathaway is shown all dressed up in pink while shopping alongside Downton Abbey's Gary Carr, Fey appears to be facing issues with her onscreen love, played by Mad Men's John Slattery, in marriage counseling.
The clip also alludes to childbirth, reconciliation, and the use of a weaponized - wait for it - tennis ball. Watch the official trailer above before the show's Oct. 18 release!

Megan Thee Stallion and Maxo Kream's Music Video Is a Sexy Ode to Classic VH1 Reality Shows
Maxo Kream teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion for his latest single, "She Live," and the two decided to recreate some classic VH1 reality shows for the culture. If you don't remember 2006's Flavor of Love, or the string of spinoffs it birthed - which includes the truly iconic I Love New York - then I'm going to have to demand you go straight to YouTube and live your best life watching all the clips possible.
Megan and Maxo use the classic formula from the aforementioned shows to find love in their music video, though they admittedly have very specific tastes. "I need a boss / I need a kingpin / I need designer pajamas to sleep in," Megan raps as she sits on a throne watching her contestants step up to show her what they've got. And honestly, who doesn't want designer PJs to sleep in? Watch the video above, and then check out Megan's other sexy video featuring an epic pool party and Nicki Minaj.
