Everything You Need to Know About the Coming Flu Season (Yep, It Could Be a Harsh One)

While there are lots of things to love about Fall, the looming threat of flu season isn't one of them - but that won't stop it from arriving, sooner rather than later. "Winter is the typical flu season, with peak flu activity usually occurring in February," Richard R. Clark, MD, FAAFP, a family medicine physician at Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Facility, told POPSUGAR. "We can begin to see cases as early as October, however, and may still see it in the early Spring."

That's one reason doctors recommend getting the flu shot sometime in October, so you're protected by the time the virus begins to spread. (It takes about two weeks for your immune system to develop the antibodies.) While getting the flu shot isn't guaranteed to keep you from catching the flu, studies show it can lower your risk by 40 to 60 percent and reduce the severity of the illness if you do get it.

How Bad Is This Flu Season Expected to Be?

While it's impossible to predict just how terrible the upcoming flu season will be, if the past couple years are any indication, it could be bad. The flu season that ran from 2017 to 2018 was one of the deadliest, with nearly 80,000 deaths caused by the flu. The one that began a year ago was the longest in 10 years, spanning 21 weeks from October to May.

Each year, scientists try to predict which strains of the flu virus will be most prevalent and develop the vaccine to match - so even if you got the flu shot last year, you'll need to get it again. "It is very important to receive the flu shot each year to provide further immunity and in recognition of the fact that the strains covered by the vaccine change from year to year," Dr. Clark said. "Receiving the vaccine is especially important for parents and caregivers, in addition to children, older or at risk individuals, and, frankly, most everyone else."

What Else Can I Do to Protect Myself From the Flu?

Aside from getting the flu shot, it's important to practice good hygiene by washing your hands often (or using hand sanitizer) and avoiding touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Throughout flu season, watch for the typical symptoms: coughing, sneezing, sore throat, fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle or body aches. If you think you might be coming down with something, call your doctor and ask if you should come in. More importantly, stay home from work or school until you're certain you're no longer contagious to help prevent the spread.

18 of Your Favorite Horror Movies That Actually Got Terrible Reviews

Of all the good movies with bad reviews out there, no genre is as divisive as horror. While you might adore the tense, drawn-out terror of The Strangers or scream in delight at House of Wax, Rotten Tomatoes feels otherwise. There have certainly been quite a few incredible scary movies out this year, but we want to take a minute to give it up for all the thrills, gore, and big twists that keep us leaping out of our seats time after terrifying time, even if critics would've preferred to give them the ax.

Timothée Chalamet Handed Out Bagels at the Premiere For The King, So It's Time to Bend the Knee

A true monarch is someone who brings bagels on the red carpet. That's how I know Timothée Chalamet is a royal I can trust - even if he only plays one in movies. The 23-year-old actor greeted fans with a surprise snack at the NYC premiere of his Netflix film The King on Oct. 1, a sweet gesture in response to a fan's request on Twitter. I love a generous ruler!

In The King, Timothée plays Henry V opposite Joel Edgerton's Falstaff and Robert Pattinson's Dauphin. Timothée's real-life girlfriend, Lily-Rose Depp, also stars as Henry's wife Catherine. "He just did a really great job," Lily-Rose told Variety at the premiere. "He really takes on his roles wholeheartedly, so it can only be super exciting and great to work with somebody like that. I think he did a really incredible job."

Keep reading to see videos from the shocked crowd, as well as photos from Timothée's night on the red carpet. Catch the movie in theaters on Oct. 11 and on Netflix starting Nov. 1. Long live the king!

OK, Let's Talk About That Ghostly Twist on American Horror Story: 1984

Just when we thought American Horror Story: 1984 was becoming merely a gorefest with a lot of camp and witty callbacks to classic films, we meet Jonas. Before we knew his name, Jonas (Lou Taylor Pucci) was simply known as the mysterious hiker that the LA crew hit as he was wandering out the woods surrounding Camp Redwood. Sadly, we don't get much out of him, because Mr. Jingles kills him and leaves him hanging on the back of a door for Brooke to discover. That is, until we see him pop up again in episode two, just in time to get murked by Richard, the Night Stalker . . . twice!

Richard is just as shocked as viewers were when he has to kill his victim a second time - usually people don't just shake off being gutted. The hiker looks confused at Richard's presence and tells him, "You're not supposed to be here." And even more alarming, he cries out, "Wait, I don't die here!"

He's obviously wrong, because Richard stabs him again, but it's also just a really weird thing to say. Curiosity piqued, Richard takes the man's discarded badge and learns he's a former Redwood camp counselor named Jonas Shevoore who worked there in 1970. Yes, that's right: Jonas was a camp counselor when Mr. Jingles allegedly massacred a cabin of counselors. As Margaret confirms for Richard, he's definitely dead. But since he's obviously having a problem staying dead, that means that Jonas is, in fact, a very confused ghost. And with that, 1984 officially passes the threshold into AHS's brand of spooky, weird sh*t.

The reveal that Jonas is a ghost from 1970 juices up the story for one huge reason: we now have another witness to the counselor massacre that has raised a few questions. When Richard goes to Margaret to discover the secrets behind the hiker's mysterious immortality, he clues the camp owner into his existence. Richard goes off to deal with Mr. Jingles at Margaret's behest (which is a Michael vs. Jason-esque showdown that I would love to see), while Margaret looks for Jonas. When the two are reunited, the ghost reveals that he remembers seeing the other camp counselor drenched in blood inside the cabin, but bearing no wounds. He tells her that he ran away toward civilization, but was hit by Mr. Jingles's car and died.

But as Margaret pushes Jonas into telling her what he saw, we get a flash of the scene he came upon back in 1970. It's notably different from the one Margaret painted for the crew in episode one; Jonas remembers seeing Margaret standing among all the bodies of Mr. Jingles's victims and soaked with blood. She's even got a bit of a smile on her face as she stares into the distance. But in Margaret's recollection, she had been among the bodies on the floor, pretending to be dead, and most importantly, missing an ear. Why would she have gotten up when Jonas could have easily been Mr. Jingles coming back to finish her off?

It doesn't help that when Margaret hears Jonas tell his version of the story, she only asks, "So Jingles was in the truck?" You reunite with a coworker you thought was dead and that's what you ask him? It almost sounds as if she was checking up on an alibi or a loose end, doesn't it?

Jonas may be a ghost, and thus unable to be killed, but damn if we aren't a little worried about him being in the clutches of Ms. Margaret Booth right now.

Lupita Nyong'o Wrote a Book For Girls of Color to "See More Dark Skin in a Beautiful Light"

Lupita Nyong'o is now a published author, and her children's picture book Sulwe - which means star in her native language Luo - sends a powerful and much-needed message to girls of color. The 48-page book, to be released on Oct. 15, focuses on the heartwarming and whimsical story of a young girl named Sulwe who goes on a journey to discover her own unique beauty.

"Sulwe has skin the color of midnight," the summary reads. "She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything."

"As a little girl reading, I had all of these windows into the lives of people who looked nothing like me."

In an Instagram post on Oct. 1, Lupita shared a photo of her 5-year-old self and reflected on who she was at such a young age and how she felt about herself, given the lack of representation for girls of color in children's literature. "This is 5-year-old me," Lupita captioned the photo. "I reflected on this little girl's feelings and fantasies when I decided to write my children's book, Sulwe. With this book, I wanted to hold up a mirror for her. Here's why: As a little girl reading, I had all of these windows into the lives of people who looked nothing like me, chances to look into their worlds, but I didn't have any mirrors. While windows help us develop empathy and an understanding of the wider world, mirrors help us develop our sense of self, and our understanding of our own world. They ground us in our body and our experiences."

Lupita went on to point out that, even at a young age, girls are taught that light skin is preferred over dark skin, and that books like Sulwe can help to encourage self-love for darker-skinned girls everywhere. "Colorism, society's preference for lighter skin, is alive and well. It's not just a prejudice reserved for places with a largely white population. Throughout the world, even in Kenya, even today, there is a popular sentiment that lighter is brighter."

Stranger Things Is Returning For Season 4, and We Might Be Leaving Hawkins!

Now that everyone has properly run through Stranger Things season three, we're already thinking about season four. To the relief of fans everywhere, Netflix confirmed that the series is returning for a fourth installment on Sept. 30, with the show's official Twitter page dropping an announcement video revealing "We're not in Hawkins anymore." It's ominous and incredibly intriguing, just like we expect!

The hit Netflix series took almost two years between its second and third seasons, so what we're really wondering now is if there will be the same kind of gap before the fourth season. We already have several theories about how season four will go down - we just need a premiere date to start nailing down the realistic ones! Hopefully, we won't be waiting years to find out what's next for our favorite Hawkins residents.

Before the streamer dropped the formal announcement, some of the cast members revealed that they were already prepared for a fourth season. Actor Jake Busey, who joins the cast in season three as a journalist named Bruce, told the Express that he certainly thinks there's still more story to tell.

"I have no idea, but from what I can imagine, there certainly should be a season four. But you never know what someone else is up to, especially when it's very shrouded in secrecy. With such success, if it was me, I know I wouldn't cancel it at this point. I do believe that there's a lot of expectations and a lot of people waiting for season three. I think it seems like, to me, I think the awareness is there, it's getting bigger."

And while we're excited about another season, an older interview suggests that the show's creators have always planned for a fourth season - and then no more. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed their preference for a four-season plan.

"We're thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out," Ross explained, pointing out that the tweenage cast will have pretty much aged up to high school or college by that point. "We just have to keep adjusting the story, though I don't know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year," Matt added. The one thing we know for sure: for as long as they're making new episodes, we'll be glued to our screens to see what happens next!
