The 1 Superstition That Continues to Make Its Way Into Every Conjuring Universe Movie

As it currently stands, there are quite a few movies in the Conjuring universe, with a bunch more on the way. That's a lot of creepy sets, a lot of crucifixes, and a lot of fiddling with spiritual forces we as humans can barely grasp. As it turns out, though, there's a special superstition in place that at least seems to keep the demons and ghouls at bay. This past December, I was lucky enough to visit the Los Angeles set of Annabelle Comes Home, where I learned a pretty interesting fact about these movies: they always have the set blessed by an actual priest to ward off evil spirits.

During my visit, I was shepherded through the day by the production's charming unit publicist, James Ferrera. He's the one who told me about the fun fact. As it turns out, they didn't think to bless the set of the first film in the series, The Conjuring. But ever since, it's become tradition. "We've done a set blessing on all of the films beginning with The Conjuring 2," Ferrera told me. "On The Conjuring 2, we had an exorcist that was recommended to us by Lorraine [Warren] - a friend of hers who's sanctioned by the church to exorcise buildings but not people. Apparently there are different levels of sanctions for exorcisms."

While he couldn't remember who had blessed the Annabelle set, he was able to piece it together from there. "On Annabelle: Creation, we had a local priest from St. Monica's parish in Santa Monica do it."

That brings us to one of the franchise's recently released films, 2018's The Nun. "On The Nun, it was the only one we didn't do a set blessing with a Catholic priest, because we were in Romania and it's 95 percent Eastern Orthodox. So, we had an Eastern Orthodox priest do the blessing at a castle in Transylvania," Ferrera recalled, then told me they'd had a local Catholic priest for the set of Annabelle Comes Home. As the franchise continues, the practice has become something that's equal parts tradition and superstition. "It worked out on The Conjuring 2," Ferrera said with a shrug. "We had very few reports of things happening, so we just kept up that tradition ever since."

With my curiosity piqued, I sprinkled in questions about the set blessings during my interviews throughout the day. The spookiest part? It seems they didn't bless the set of Annabelle Comes Home at the start of production, because a couple members of the cast recounted creepy on-set experiences that happened before the set was eventually blessed. Here's hoping things stayed quiet after the fact.

You may think this whole "set blessing" thing sounds kind of silly, but I'll leave you with this: some of Hollywood's most iconic (and demonic) horror movies were plagued with unsettling setbacks during production. Take The Omen, which is considered one of the most haunted films productions in history. Then there's the set of Poltergeist, which befell great misfortune after the crew used real human skeletons to film one scene. And with a demonic doll in the mix - there's a real Annabelle doll, people - I bet that set blessing is sounding real good right about now.

Watchmen: The Tulsa Race Massacre Is a Horrific Piece of Real-Life History

HBO premiered a new action-drama on Sunday, Oct. 20, called Watchmen, a new story set in the world of the DC Comics and 2009 Zack Snyder film of the same name. The episode, titled "It's Summer and We're Runing Out of Ice," opens with a horrific scene in Tulsa in 1921, where white rioters are massacring black citizens. It lays the foundation for pretty much everything that is going on on the show in present day, but was it a real event? Warning: Light spoilers ahead for the Watchmen premiere episode.

In a word, yes - the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is 100 percent a real thing that happened; the Oklahoma Historical Society says that it is "believed to be the single worst incident of racial violence in American history."

Additionally, the website says that the riots started over an incident between an African-American shoe shiner named Dick Rowland and a white elevator operator named Sarah Page. No one knows exactly what happened - a common explanation is that Rowland stepped on Page's foot and she screamed. However, by the next day, the Tulsa Tribune was reporting that Rowland attempted to rape Page and there was quickly talk of lynching Rowland.

Lynching was apparently not that uncommon in Oklahoma in the 1920s; just eight months before the race massacre, a white mob lynched a white teenager who was accused of murder. So, by nighttime on May 31, there was a white mob gathered outside the Tulsa courthouse demanding the sheriff turn Rowland over to them. He refused, but the mob did not dissipate and eventually a contingent of African-American men came to offer their services to the authorities to help protect Rowland. They were turned down, but as they were leaving, a white man attacked one of them and the riots began.

Overnight, white citizens began making drive-by shootings in black neighborhoods, and they specifically organized an invasion of the primarily black neighborhood of Greenwood once the sun rose. Once day dawned, the white rioters invaded Greenwood and slaughtered its black residents with guns and perhaps even airplanes (eyewitness accounts differ about the use of planes).

According to the Tulsa Historical Society website, at the time of the riots, historians thought 800 people were injured and 36 killed, but historians now believe that as many as 300 people died because in the late 1990s, many victims were found in unmarked grave sites.

It took years to rebuild Greenwood and obviously the attacks left a deep rift in the Tulsa community. It is this rift that forms the basis for Watchmen's present-day action, where white supremacists calling themselves the Seventh Cavalry and styling themselves after the Watchmen figure Rorschach have declared war against black citizens and the Tulsa police.

It is also heavily implied that Louis Gossett Jr.'s character is a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre. In the gruesome opening sequence of the premiere, a little boy and a baby manage to escape the deadly riots that claim the lives of their parents. Unfortunately we don't see what happens to them after they walk into the distance, presumably unharmed, since the show then skips ahead to present day. Based on a note seen in Gossett's hands at the episode's end, though, he is clearly supposed to be the grown-up version of that same little boy, at the ripe old age of about 105.

It will be interesting to see how Gosset Jr.'s character - who is unnamed within the series thus far, but whom HBO has said in press releases is called "Will Reeves" - and his presence at the massacre will intertwine with the alternate version of US history presented in Watchmen.

Watchmen: Here's What We Know About Louis Gossett Jr.'s Mysterious Will Reeves

The new HBO action drama Watchmen sets up several mysteries in the premiere episode, not the least of which is just who Louis Gossett Jr.'s character is in the world of these masked vigilantes. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the premiere.

In the first episode of Watchmen, titled "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice," the opening scene shows a dramatization of the real-life Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, in which, historians believe, over 300 people were killed, mostly African-American citizens of Tulsa, OK. Among the chaos and death, a little boy manages to escape in a wagon with a couple that his parents know. His parents are then presumably blown up when an airplane drops a bomb on the warehouse they were last seen in.

Later on, when the wagon presumably crashes and the couple are killed, the little boy finds their baby alive nearby and picks her up - the baby seems to be dressed in girl clothes, though there is no confirmation of the baby's sex. The only thing the little boy has with him is a note that reads, "Watch over this boy."

We don't yet know for whom the note was intended, but cut to the end of the episode and Gossett Jr.'s character has the note. Now, he never gives his name, but HBO's press release about the cast lists him as "Will Reeves." That may have been his original name or it may be the name he ended up with when he was taken in by whoever raised him.

It remains to be seen how exactly Will figures into the Watchmen universe, but he does seem to know about Angela's (Regina King) double life. Earlier in the episode, he sits outside her "bakery" and asks her if she thinks he can lift 200 pounds. That seems fairly innocuous . . . until he later calls her to come find the body of the chief (Don Johnson), who has been lynched, hung from a tree out in the country.

Was Will possibly referring to lifting the chief? Why is he at the site of the body? And how did he even get to the middle of that field? He is in a wheelchair, after all. Also, during the phone call when Will tells Angela to come find the chief's body, he tells her not to wear a mask, so he knows she's one of the masked policemen running around. He also seems to know that her father was Marcus Abar. What connection does Will have to Angela?

For now we'll have to wait and see until next Sunday, when hopefully HBO will reveal how someone who is roughly 105 years old may have been involved in lynching the Chief of Tulsa's police force. In the meantime, we'll be brushing up on all the Watchmen origin stories.

All the Inspiration You Need For Your Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Costume

The Rocky Horror Picture Show first premiered over 40 years ago, but it still remains a cult classic to this day - just ask the cast, who reunited as recently as 2015. Whether it's on stage, on screen, or in movie theaters across the world, these costumes have been replicated time and time again, and there's no wrong way to do it yourself. Whether you want to keep it simple as Brad, Janet, or Riff Raff, or go all out as Frank-N-Furter or Columbia, we're looking back at the film's characters and how to make them a part of your Halloween.

Doctors Explain the Link Between Carbs and Belly Fat - and Which Carbs Are Healthiest

Carbs aren't the only cause of belly fat, but if you eat a lot of them, they can certainly play a role. "If you eat any type of macronutrient in excess, you will gain weight," Robert Milanes, MD, founder of Luminary MD in Irvine, CA, told POPSUGAR. Still, the way carbs are digested makes them particularly risky when you're trying to lose weight or prevent weight gain.

"Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which may be used as an energy source by our cells, tissues, and organs," Aastha Kalra, DO, founder of Weight Zero MD, told POPSUGAR. When eaten in excess, "glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver," Dr. Milanes added, which can be converted back to glucose and used for energy when few or no carbs are consumed.

The real trouble begins when even your glycogen stores are at maximum capacity. "When we eat carbs, insulin levels rise," Dr. Kalra said. Insulin is tasked with taking glucose from the bloodstream to areas of the body that need energy, but it's also a fat storage hormone. Dr. Milanes explained that, if you eat too many carbs and there are no areas of the body that need energy, the glucose has nowhere to go and will be stored as fat instead.

How to Eat Carbs Without Gaining Weight

There are two types of carbs: simple carbohydrates (found largely in processed foods), which are made up of simple sugars and digested by the body quickly, and complex carbs, which are high in fiber and digested more slowly. Complex carbs keep you feeling fuller longer, but they also keep insulin levels stable, which encourages energy burning and prevents fat storage.

While you can't spot-reduce fat from your midsection, eating more complex carbs - especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts - can also help kick-start weight loss. At the beginning, you may need to monitor your total carb intake, including grains and sugary fruits, in order to reduce the amount of insulin in the body, Dr. Kalra explained. That means eating a low-carb diet (this meal plan can help get you started) until you can shift to a weight maintenance stage, when you can add some more complex carbs, such as whole grains, to your plate.

Camila Cabello's Crop-Top Is Anti-Romance, but That Won't Stop Me From Loving Her Satin Pants

Camila Cabello can turn any event into a runway, even when it's just ea casual house party in Beverly Hills. Recently, the "Easy" singer stepped out in red satin pants and a cropped white tee with "Romance" slashed out - a nod to her upcoming album. She wore her long hair down in waves and tied everything together with chunky black combat boots and oversized silver hoop earrings. Did I just step off of a time machine or is this a look straight from the '90s?

If Camila did use the '90s as her evening style inspo, it wouldn't be surprising. She tapped into some of that nostalgia for her recent Saturday Night Live performance and again for a day date with boyfriend Shawn Mendes. We love a throwback look! Keep reading for a glimpse of Camila's outfit from all angles.

Grey's Anatomy Fans Can't Handle Cristina Yang's Recent Text to Meredith (Neither Can We)

It's been four score and several years since Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang graced the hallowed halls of Grey Sloan Memorial, but during the Oct. 17 episode of Grey's Anatomy, the character reminds fans of her presence with a cheeky offscreen cameo.

As a reminder, Cristina leaves Grey Sloan Memorial in season 10 when she moves away from Seattle to lead a cardio-thoracic department at a hospital in Switzerland - but that doesn't mean she isn't still in the know when it comes to the hospital's drama. In Thursday's episode, Meredith suffers from an intense case of foot-in-mouth disease (not the actual disease, mind you) when she accidentally publishes a list of problems she has with the medical field and, more specifically, with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Since Meredith is already on superthin ice after committing insurance fraud, defiantly refusing to apologize for her actions, and attempting to practice medicine while her medical license is under review, it's definitely not a smart idea to disrespect her former place of work where her mentor Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is still the chief.

When Meredith's list goes live, all hell breaks loose, and it's the perfect time for her "person" to step in and make sure she's OK. The disgraced doctor receives a text message from her friend that simply reads, "Move to Switzerland before Bailey murders you in your sleep." It's short, and it's a spot-on prediction of the magnitude of Miranda's anger. When Meredith seeks out her former mentor, the older woman is rightfully hurt by Meredith's list and exasperated with her bullsh*t. "I was your friend, your mentor, and every time you needed me, I was there," Bailey tells her, refusing to accept Meredith's apologies.

The episode ends without any reconciliation, and it doesn't seem like there will be a solution to the rift between Miranda and Meredith anytime soon. Maybe Cristina has a point? At least that way the fans can get a proper appearance from their favorite! Still, any mention of Cristina is enough to send Grey's Anatomy viewers into a tizzy. Check out their reactions ahead!

This Dark and Moody "'Til Death Do Us Part" Wedding Is Chillingly Beautiful

Photographer Allie Marie had always taken pictures with a dark aesthetic, and for this styled wedding shoot, she decided to take her moody technique to the next level. Her vision was to create an alternative wedding that pushed the boundaries, one that you don't see every day, and her goth "until death do us part" theme captured just that.

"Weddings, of course, are all about two souls finding one another and vowing their lives to each other, but they also should be a reflection of those two souls and personalities. It's OK to be different. Different is beautiful!" Said Allie about the shoot.

The photos were taken on the grounds of the Ostreum in Fort Worth, TX, and its industrial design blends perfectly with the wedding's theme. The bride wore a gorgeous, long-sleeve velvet green dress while the groom wore an all-black tux with a black bow tie. Together, the models looked stunning against their haunted backdrop.

If you want to see more of the steamy "until death do us part" theme, keep reading to see all the pictures.

25 Times Stevie Channeled Your Most Indifferent Self During Schitt’s Creek
