Do You Know the Difference Between Champagne and Prosecco?

There's nothing better than walking into a party to find that the corks have been popped and the bubbly is flowing. It's like a bottle of liquid sparkles, ready to get the party started, whatever the occasion may be. But while you may understand the different flavor profiles involved from sweet Rosé to Brut, do you really know the difference between Champagne and Prosecco?

In order to get a definitive answer, we made a call to Melissa Rockwell, direct-to-consumer sales manager for Long Island, NY-based Sparkling Pointe, a manufacturer of sparkling wines located on the North Fork of Long Island. "All Champagne is sparking wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne," she told POPSUGAR.

Where Are Champagne and Prosecco Made?

To start, Rockwell said, Champagne is made in the Champagne region of France and is made from either a single variety or a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Prosecco is manufactured in Northern Italy and is mostly made from the Glera grape, although it can also be made from a few other varietals. "In Europe, the wines are named after the region where the grapes are grown. All sorts of environmental factors affect your flavors, and it would be misleading to consumers to put a name on a label that isn't where the grapes grow," she said.

And while region is important, she did note that there are some older wineries outside of Champagne, France, like Korbel in Sonoma, CA, that do use the word "Champagne" on the products because they were "grandfathered in before these agreements went into effect."

How Are Champagne and Prosecco Made?

According to Rockwell, the main difference between Champagne and Proscecco is the process in which the sparkling drinks are made. She explained that Champagne is made through a process called méthode champenoise in which a base wine is created and then goes through two different fermentation processes - one in a tank, and a second directly in the bottle itself. It can take 10 years or more to produce a bottle of Champagne, allowing it to develop a complex flavor profile.

"Most sparkling wine will have méthode champenoise on the label if they use that process because there are easier ways to get bubbles that don't taste as good," she said. It's also worth nothing that Prosecco, too, is fermented twice - using a charmot method. The difference here is that both times it is fermented in the tank.

Is There a Difference in Taste Between Champagne and Prosecco?

As for flavor profiles, Rockwell explained that Proseccos tend to be lighter and a little less complex than Champagne and that, oftentimes, she finds them to also be a little bit sweeter. Price points differ, too. A bottle of good Champagne - not quite high-end and not quite low-end - will set you back about $40 a bottle, whereas experts note that you can get the same quality Prosecco for $13 a bottle. "There is definitely a value to Prosecco," Rockwell said. And we couldn't agree more.

Since there's always room in your closet for a new favorite pair of leggings, may we suggest one of these 15 high-waisted pairs?

Grab-and-Go Egg Muffins Make Breakfast a Breeze

Few breakfasts are quite as satiating and satisfying as eggs, but during the week it can be challenging to carve out enough time to poach a couple to runny-yolked perfection or whip up a veggie-packed scramble. Those sorts of mornings call for something of the grab-and-go variety, like these umami-rich kale, caramelized onion, and gouda mini frittatas (aka egg muffins).

This combination of slightly bitter kale, deep-dark caramelized onions, and nutty cheese adds a big dose of flavor to the eggy frittata base. Yes, caramelizing onions takes time - don't believe any recipe that claims they'll be done in 20 minutes - but it's a mostly unattended process that can be accomplished while puttering around the kitchen doing other things, and their umami-bomb qualities are well worth it. Aside from the onions, it's a relatively speedy recipe, and, since the muffins reheat so well and can even be frozen, they're a great candidate for weekend meal prep.

When your fridge (or freezer) is stocked with a batch of these, breakfast is as simple as tucking two into a resealable plastic bag, tossing that in your work bag, and reheating them in the office. Compared to a bowl of cereal, it's a no-brainer choice.

Kale, Caramelized Onion, and Gouda Egg Muffins

From Nicole Perry, POPSUGAR Food

Notes

If you have already-caramelized onions, substitute a heaping 1/2 cup. Once cooled, store the muffins in an airtight container; they can be refrigerated for up to a week, or frozen for up to a month. Reheat for a few minutes in a 350ºF oven or toaster oven until warmed through (if frozen, thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating).

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided, plus more for greasing the muffin tin
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced into half-moons
    Kosher salt
    1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
1 large bunch lacinato kale, stemmed and cut into 1/2-inch-wide ribbons
1 cup grated aged gouda, divided
    8 large eggs

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 12-cup standard muffin tin with olive oil.
  2. In a large skillet, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil over medium-high until just shimmering. Add the onions and 1/2 a teaspoon salt, stirring to evenly coat the onions with oil. Keep cooking, stirring the onions occasionally and adjusting the heat (if necessary) to accommodate slow, even browning. As the onions cook, scrape up any brown bits that begin to form on the bottom of the skillet. (Add a splash of water to deglaze, from time to time.) Keep cooking until the onions are slumped, have dramatically shrunk in volume, and are deep-caramel brown. Season with about 1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, and transfer to a medium mixing bowl.
  3. Wipe out the skillet, and heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering, but not smoking. Add the kale, a generous pinch of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until bright green and somewhat wilted, 2-3 minutes. Add the kale to the caramelized onions. Cool for 10 minutes, then add 3/4 cup gouda, tossing everything together with tongs to evenly distribute the filling ingredients.
  4. Divide the caramelized onions, kale, and cheese between the muffin tin wells.
  5. Whisk together the eggs and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a measuring cup, until no streaks of yolk remain. Carefully pour the egg mixture into the muffin tin wells, filling each well about 3/4 full. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup gouda on top of the muffins.
  6. Bake for 18-22 minutes, rotating halfway through, or until puffy, cooked through, and golden on top.
  7. Cool for 2-3 minutes, then remove from the muffin tin (run a butter knife around the muffin if it's stubborn). Serve hot or at room temperature.

See Christy Carlson Romano and Jason Earles Make Hannah Montana's Cheese Jerky Recipe IRL

If your first order of business upon getting a Disney+ account was to rewatch every single episode of Hannah Montana, then prepare for a major Disney throwback. On the most recent episode of Christy's Kitchen on YouTube, Jason Earles (aka Jackson Rod Stewart) joined Christy Carlson Romano, the voice of Kim Possible, to reflect on his Hannah Montana days and cook up some of Jackson and Oliver's classic cheese jerky. Does anyone else remember their supercheesy rap?

Unlike the "gas station ingredients" used on set, Romano and Earles made a delicious-looking, homemade cheddar and gouda cheese sauce (yum). As they cooked, Earles showed off his handmade Jackson Stewart doll and even received his very own Silver "Booty" award. Mitchel Musso (aka Oliver Oken, aka "The Man Who Had the Jerky") couldn't make it for this episode, but I have no doubt that he'd totally approve of the new and improved cheese jerky recipe. Watch the full video here, and stay until the end to watch them perform the full "Cheese Jerky Rap."

All Due Respect, But Disney Princesses Are Outdated and It's Time to Move On

It's almost 2020, and there's one piece of pop culture hasn't changed in decades: the Disney princess obsession. Sure, they're a classic part of the Disney brand, but do they still have a place in the modern world? In recent years, Disney has been moving towards less passive princesses, but it might be time to consider moving away from royalty more often.

The reasons for Disney's original "princess" brand are pretty straightforward. The classic animation division specialized in adapting fairy tales, and a large number of fairy tales have princesses as their heroes. Presto: lots of Disney animated princesses!

"Passive princesses are out; tough, active, diverse women are in."

Fundamentally, a lot of fairy tales are about the concept of restoration, or, to be more specific, restoration to the social status quo. For instance, Cinderella (and not just the Disney version) is an aristocrat by birth who's forced "down" the social/class ladder into servitude, but the rightful order is restored when she is elevated to royalty by marriage. Similarly, Snow White, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty tales focus on princesses who are forced to abandon their royal rights because of wicked interlopers (who are, it is worth noting, of a lower social class) and who are restored to their rightful stations by the end. In producing classic princess fairy tales, Disney's films have supported a particular notion not just of femininity, but of social class: heroes come from positions of power, and being "knocked down" is merely a step on their journey before they're re-elevated. That's not a message that really rings true in the modern world, where we try to celebrate people from all backgrounds.

In recent years, Disney has started making strides towards shaking up that notion. Passive princesses are out; tough, active, diverse women are in. Moana and the live-action version of Jasmine are preparing to rule in their own rights; Tiana isn't a princess by birth and has a strong work ethic and clear professional goals. The logical extension, at this point, is capable, active heroes who also aren't royalty.

Disney's big 2020 release, the live-action Mulan, is a good step in this direction: a female hero who is neither royal by birth nor by marriage. Its animated predecessor was, in fact, part of a mini-trend of non-royal heroes during the animation renaissance in the '90s: Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame's Romani activist Esmeralda, and the morally gray Meg in Hercules. Pixar also has given us a handful of non-princess heroes, with films such as Inside Out and The Incredibles.

The ways that Disney's princesses have evolved over the years suggest that we no longer necessarily "need" heroes who are royalty; we care more about their inner strength than their class status. The idea of the "princess" character is slowly moving away from pure royalty and towards being a synonym for a certain kind of hero.

These heroes are brave, kind-hearted, compassionate, willing to learn about themselves and the world, and determined to achieve their dreams. Because we're so used to them being "princess" characters, we call them that, even when they're not technically royalty, but that's exactly the point: we should be celebrating those ordinary characters who achieve great things, not just lumping them in with the usual princesses. We don't need tiaras and ball gowns - even though there's no shame in loving those too! - because what really matters is what these characters teach us about being women, being strong, and being true.

With that in mind, it doesn't seem like too much to hope for that Disney starts leaning more into non-royal heroes. The stakes of "saving a kingdom" have gotten a little repetitive, and there are so many stories to be told about perfectly ordinary, non-royal girls and women. At this point, the princess trope is more for aesthetics than for actual storytelling purposes, so why not explore other stories that are also about strong, interesting women, just without the throne? There's not a lot known about Disney's upcoming slate of films, aside from their planned live-action remakes, so we'll have to wait and hope that their commitment to evolving with the times will extend to this as well.

Noah Centineo Calls His Charlie's Angels Character the "Right Amount of Goofy"

Every day that passes without the premiere of the To All the Boys I've Loved Before sequel is another day I spend softly weeping into my pillow, but luckily, there's some good news for all the Lara Jean and Peter shippers out there: Noah Centineo, who plays Peter, is starring in the new Charlie's Angels film! So in other words, while we might not be seeing him sweeping LJ (Lana Condor) off her feet anytime soon, at least we can all take solace in the fact that we'll see at least one-half of the duo on the big screen in November.

The trailer for the action-packed reboot (though it isn't technically a reboot, but more of a continuation) debuted a few weeks back, leaving Centineo's fans with only one question on their minds: who the heck is he playing? Luckily, POPSUGAR had the chance to go behind the scenes of Elizabeth Banks's take on the iconic franchise in Berlin last year, where Centineo was on set and happy to divulge a few things about his character, Langston.

According to the actor, Langston is a "cool" goof who works with tech guru Elena (Aladdin's Naomi Scott) and ends up getting tangled with the Angels when she goes to them for help.

"He's got a goofy element to him, but he's pretty well-rounded, though," he explained. "He's not goofy when you should be serious. He won't just crack a joke when it shouldn't be there. But he's also not afraid to make fun of certain normal structures. If they're in a business meeting, and Elena messes up, he'll crack jokes at her under the table. But he would never do it to his boss. So he's the right amount of serious, the right amount of goofy. He's the right amount dedicated to his craft."

Although Langston has a clear bond with Elena, don't expect sparks to fly between them when the film hits theaters on Nov. 15. "He works in software development with Elena, and he looks up to her, but she's also very much so his sister in this dynamic," he said. "They share a sense of humor and spend a lot of their nights off together, but it's a platonic relationship."

If anything, it seems Langston ends up flirting with gun-wielding Angel Jane (Ella Balinska) in the trailer, so we're excited to see where that leads.

Emma Roberts Just Went From Brunette to Honey Blond, and We're Obsessed

Emma Roberts switched up her hair ahead of the holidays, and her new color has us considering "honey blond." The actress headed to Nine Zero One salon in LA for a total transformation from the midlength brown hair she rocked while filming American Horror Story: 1984. Her hairstylist, Nikki Lee, said she wanted to "keep things warm" for Roberts's look this Winter. "Since we knew we wanted to go long with her hair we wanted to make sure the blond wasn't platinum-looking. Keeping it in this honey tone gives us a more natural and classic vibe for this holiday season," Lee told POPSUGAR via email.

Lee teamed up with Seama Eftekhari for Great Lengths extensions that add lots of length to Roberts's hair. In addition, the hairstylist used Joico's Blonde Life Lightener and In Common's Crystal Cashmere in-salon treatment for strength and shine. She finished it off with layers and texture, and the style 100 percent suits Roberts. See how this honey blond color compares to the dark brown we're used to seeing on the gorgeous actress ahead.

The 12 Cheapest Places to Buy Generic Drugs

If you've been buying generic medicine at a major convenience store, you might want to explore other options.

A Consumer Reports survey revealed people can pay up to $862 more on generic medicine at the highest-priced pharmacy, compared to the lowest. HealthWarehouse.com had the cheapest prices, while CVS, Rite Aid, and Target had the most expensive prices for generic drugs.

Here is the list of stores ranked in order of the lowest to highest prices, according to the consumer watchdog:

  1. HealthWarehouse.com
  2. Costco
  3. Independent pharmacies
  4. Sam's Club
  5. Walmart
  6. Kmart
  7. Grocery stores
  8. Walgreens
  9. Rite Aid
  10. CVS/Target

Of course, if you have insurance that will cover the cost of the drugs, the price difference may not be that much between the stores. But that might not always be the case, so be sure to comparison shop before you make the purchase. Sometimes the cost of buying generic medicine out of pocket at Costco may be lower than your insurance copay, according to redditors discussing the study in a thread.

Thankfully, free services like GoodRX exist to do the work of comparison shopping for you by scanning prices at nearby pharmacies and providing coupons to get the lowest possible cost for your medication. The company claims it helps people save up to 80 percent off their medications through the process.

If you are paying out of pocket, it only makes sense to shop at the store that provides the lowest prices. The amount you can save buying medicine can be quite hefty. Shoppers in the study found that a generic Lipitor at HealthWarehouse.com costs around $10, while CVS would sell it for $135.

It always helps to do your research on medication costs before spending the big bucks. Consumer Reports found that, while the stores in the study almost always honored online discounts, you have to make sure you ask and are persistent. The report says:

There are in-store discounts, but they're rarely applied unless you ask for them specifically. Third-party online discount coupons tend to be even deeper and more attractive. So ask for "all available" discounts, and then make sure to get the best option. Otherwise, pharmacists may simply use your insurance or, if you don't have insurance, offer you a smaller in-store discount or even charge you the full retail price.
