4 Morning Stretches to Combat Work-From-Home Body Stiffness
That peaceful moment when your coffee is brewing and your toast is browning is the perfect time to combat some of the work-from-home joint pain or stiffness that comes with swapping your office chair for a sectional.
Before clocking in from the couch, get ahead of your tight shoulders and back with some morning stretches.
No brainpower is required, as you obviously haven't sipped your caffeine yet. Dani Singer, a NASM-certified personal trainer and CEO of Fit2Go, has the exact stretch sequence handled.
Just follow his step-by-step stretching instructions below.
Sit and Reach
When we're sitting all day, our hamstrings are constantly in a contracted position, leading to a tight lower back and legs. Singer explained that this is what can make it feel difficult to bend down and pick things up.
- Sit on the floor with your left leg extended in front of you. Bend your right knee to the side and place your right foot against your left inner thigh.
- Take a deep breath in and then slowly let it out as you reach both hands toward your left toes and hold. If you can't reach your toes, grab your shin instead.
- Hold this position for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.
Doorway Stretch
The first step in fixing your posture - which can be negatively impacted by hunching over your computer - is loosening your tight chest, Singer noted.
- Stand in a doorway and place your right arm on the frame beside you. Keep the elbow bent at 90 degrees.
- Lean into the stretch by stepping forward through the doorway with your arm staying in place on the door frame. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest, as the wall pulls your torso into an upright posture.
- Hold for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Neck Release
According to Singer, our necks are constantly tight from hunching over our computers and phones, which can further lead to jaw pain and headaches. Relieve some of that tension with this simple stretch.
- Tilt your head toward your right shoulder.
- Rotate your neck to the left to look up toward the ceiling.
- Gently pull your head further toward your right shoulder using your right hand.
- While maintaining that gentle pull, rotate your neck to look down toward the floor.
- Do five rotations, looking at the ceiling and then the floor. Breathe deeply and slowly while you move.
- Release and repeat on the other side.
Seated Figure 4
Your butt muscles are meant to be used daily. Thanks to chairs, we limit our own range of motion, leading to a tight and weak rear end. Singer added that this is a common cause of hip, back, and knee pain.
- Sit in a chair with your right ankle crossed over your left knee.
- Slowly push your right knee down toward the floor with your right hand.
- Hold for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.
- Repeat on the other side.

Where Is the Acne in Beauty Ads For Acne Products?
Acne is a widespread, common skin concern. Everyone has experienced a breakout or two at least once in their life. Practically every beauty brand on the market makes a product to target it - be it a concealer to cover or a spot treatment to heal - so why is it so hard to find acne in campaign imagery?
You would think that ads for acne-focused products would display some sort of blemish, but that's rarely the case. In the beauty industry, when a brand announces it will no longer retouch their models, it's considered a big deal - and don't get us wrong, we do commend them for it - but it really should be expected.
It's important to show examples of diverse models with real skin with pimples, and uneven skin texture, and other imperfections. It normalizes all skin conditions and empowers people to feel confident and naturally beautiful without the need to hide part of themselves. Let us explain.
Why Showing Acne in Beauty Campaigns Matters
"Retouched skin in beauty ads greatly contributes to harmful and unrealistic beauty standards that still exist in the industry," Jasmine Glass, one of the founders of SPKTRM Beauty, told POPSUGAR. As a brand, SPKTRM Beauty launched under this ideology and has banned retouching on all models from the very start. This decision helps make its marketing materials feel more relatable and authentic, rather than unattainable, but it goes even deeper than that.

Beyoncé Wrote a Letter to Kentucky's Attorney General Demanding Justice For Breonna Taylor
Image Source: Getty / ROBYN BECK
Beyoncé is demanding justice for Breonna Taylor in a way that's easy to replicate. On June 14, the singer shared an open letter to Attorney General Daniel Cameron on her website. In the message, she asked for "swift and decisive action" to be taken on Breonna's behalf, specifically, that charges be brought against the Louisville officers involved with Breonna's death.
"Three months have passed - and the LMPD's investigations have created more questions than answers," Beyoncé wrote. "Their incident report states that Ms. Taylor suffered no injuries - yet we know she was shot at least eight times. The LMPD officers claim they announced themselves before forcing their way into Ms. Taylor's apartment - but her boyfriend who was with her, as well as several neighbors, all say that this is untrue."
"Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy."
She continued, "Three months have passed - and zero arrests have been made, and no officers have been fired. The LMPD's investigation was turned over to your office, and yet all of the officers involved in the shooting remain employed by the LMPD. Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officers Myles Cosgrove and Brett Hankison must be held accountable for their actions."
"Three months have passed - and Breonna Taylor's family still waits for justice. Ms. Taylor's family has not been able to take time to process and grieve. Instead, they have been working tirelessly to rally the support of friends, their community, and the country to obtain justice for Breonna."
Beyoncé urged the Attorney General to take three clear steps to honor Breonna: bring criminal charges against the three officers, commit to transparency in the investigation of their conduct, and investigate the LMPD's response to Breonna's murder. "Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy. With every death of a Black person at the hands of the police, there are two real tragedies: the death itself, and the inaction and delays that follow it," she wrote. "This is your chance to end that pattern. Take swift and decisive action in charging the officers. The next months cannot look like the last three."
Check out her full letter ahead, and consider raising your voice for Breonna by writing your own message to the address Beyoncé provides. You can also sign a petition calling for the officers to be charged and visit the #BirthdayforBreonna campaign site for more action items.

A Look at All the Movie Releases and Productions Delayed by the Coronavirus
Many of us have been thrown for a loop by the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and Hollywood is just one of the major machines scrambling to handle the fallout. With all theaters quickly closing their doors and nationwide lockdowns encouraging people to stay at home as much as possible, all major spring and early summer movie releases have been pushed back.
Some films like Wonder Woman 1984 and No Time to Die have announced new release dates, while others like Black Widow and Mulan are postponed indefinitely. Meanwhile, some haven't even gotten the chance to kick off the ground, like Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid reboot and Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Check out our list of the major productions that have been affected by the coronavirus, and keep an eye out for updates on their spots on the release calendar.
I've Probably Owned 100+ Workout Leggings in My Life, and This $35 Pair Is My Favorite
I've told a number of people recently that I found the best workout tights with pockets. Sometimes using words like "best" and "perfect" can be tricky to justify when you're explaining an opinion, so I thought it would be important to break down what attributes of these tights earn them a favored title. I've been a runner, volleyball player, and overall gym rat my entire life, and if there's one thing I feel strongly about, it's the pockets.
I recently had an opportunity to test out the Old Navy High-Waisted Elevate Powersoft 7/8-Length Side-Pocket Leggings For Women ($35, originally $40) to see how the pair delivered, and I knew after my first workout this would be a pant I'd be buying time and time again.
They're incredibly easy to slide on and don't require additional tugging at the thigh or waistband in order to get them on the way other tights I own do. Even after a dozen washes, they remain the perfect balance of snug and malleable (they're 23-percent spandex!). The waistband is the perfect height, so if I want to work out in just a sports bra, I still feel somewhat modest and supported. And my absolute favorite aspect of these tights is, of course, the deep pockets. My iPhone, keys, and small zip wallet all fit inside the pockets and don't budge while running, which is no easy feat. I've done burpees and jumping jacks and gone on at least a dozen runs in them, and nothing has ever fallen out.
Lego Pulls Advertising For Police-Related Building Sets in Support of the Black Community
Lego is taking the events surrounding the killing of George Floyd seriously, and not just with a hefty donation.
On Wednesday, the toymaker announced on Twitter that it would donate $4 million in support of the Black community and pledged to send that money to "organizations dedicated to supporting Black children and educating all children about racial equality."
- LEGO (@LEGO_Group) June 3, 2020
Lego added that "there is much to do," and to that end, the children's brick-building company went a step further.
In an email sent to online retailers that sell Lego sets, the company behind the Lego Movie franchise and Legoland theme parks requested that marketing for certain products be stopped and removed from commerce sites as soon as possible "in light of recent events." More than 30 products were listed in the email, and among them were ones that featured representation of police officers, firefighters, and criminals. Police and fire stations - as well as emergency vehicles like patrol cars and helicopters - were listed, as were mini figures in city police vests and the White House. The email didn't specify how long the products should not be promoted.
Following confusion from sellers, a Lego spokesperson clarified in a statement to CNBC that they "have not removed any sets from sale" and have no plans to halt production of the ones listed.
"The intent of the email was to ask that [members of Lego's affiliate marketing program] pause promoting and marketing a selection of Lego products on their sites. We paused all marketing across our own social channels earlier this week in response to the tragic events in the US."
It's a bold move for any toy company, but the Lego spokesperson made clear the brand's goal: "There is no place for racism in our society . . . Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow and that includes inspiring them to be tolerant, inclusive, and kind."
A 9-Year-Old Couldn't Relate to Characters in Books, So She Created a Diverse Online Bookstore
Ever since 9-year-old Rylei was a little girl, she's always loved to read. And while there was nothing better for her than diving into an adventure between the pages, she quickly realized that many of her books' characters didn't look like her. Determined to get her hands on more diverse books, Rylei founded her own online children's bookstore, The Brown Bookcase, last year.
"Rylei started her business in October 2019 after realizing she was having a hard time finding books she could identify with," Rylei's mom, Brea, told POPSUGAR. "She loves to read, but she was becoming uninterested. She researched books that featured characters she could relate to, whether it was their skin tone, their curly hair, the way they interacted with their family and friends, or where they were from. And then BOOM The Brown Bookcase was born. Our goal is to provide diverse books for children of all races so that they are aware that the world is full of so many people who may not always look like us, but should be treated no differently."
Families can shop Rylei's top picks - like Betty Before X ($8) and I Believe I Can ($19) - online and get free shipping on orders of $35 or more. To get the latest news on The Brown Bookcase and children's literature, follow its account on Instagram.

This 60-Minute CrossFit Home Workout Is Guaranteed to Make You Strong and Sweaty!
If you're itching to do a longer workout to up your fitness game or because it's the weekend and you finally have some free time, here's a 60-minute CrossFit home workout you can bust through. What's great about this workout is that it includes eight different basic CrossFit moves, but you do them in a random order (chosen by a random generator), keeping your mind and your muscles guessing. Jade Jenny, head CrossFit coach and owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit, chose eight basic bodyweight and dumbbell moves like plank holds and chest presses you can do with minimal equipment.
This is an EMOM workout (every minute on the minute), but since it's 60 minutes, Jenny simplified the structure of the workout by having us repeat each exercise for two minutes (so it's 30 rounds). I did this workout over Zoom with about 60 other members of my box, and by the 30-minute mark, I wanted to shut my laptop and call it a day. But seeing everyone struggling through deadlifts, lunges, and seemingly endless burpees, I felt inspired to push even harder! It also reminded me how much I miss my gym and made me fall in love with CrossFit all over again.
If you can't get to your gym or you love home workouts, give this 60-minute HIIT workout a try. You'll be sweaty, but knowing you're getting stronger will make you feel so good! As Jenny says before every workout, "Get after it!"

The 60-Minute CrossFit Home Workout
Equipment needed: One or two pair of dumbbells; choose a weight you'll be able to work with throughout the workout (I used 15-pound and 25-pound dumbbells).
Directions: Before the workout, complete a five-minute dynamic warmup. This is a 60-minute workout, but do whatever you have time for, whether it's 20, 30, or 40 minutes. There will be eight different exercises in this workout, and they should be completed in the specific (yet random) order listed in the chart ahead. Repeat each movement twice (so for two minutes) before moving on to the next exercise. For each minute, complete as many proper reps as you can in 40 seconds, followed by a 20-second rest. Rep suggestions are listed below; beginners can do fewer reps, and more advanced athletes can go for higher reps.
After the workout, make time for this 10-minute stretching routine. Read on for a rundown of the exercises you'll be doing and directions on how to do each exercise.
- Exercise 1: Dumbbell forward lunge: five to eight reps per side
- Exercise 2: Dumbbell deadlift: eight to 12 reps
- Exercise 3: Single-arm dumbbell overhead shoulder press: five to eight reps per side
- Exercise 4: Dumbbell chest press (on floor or bench): 10 to 15 reps
- Exercise 5: Burpee: eight to 12 reps
- Exercise 6: Air squat: 15 to 25 reps
- Exercise 7: Plank hold: 30 to 40 seconds
- Exercise 8: V-up: 10 to 20 reps
Time | Exercises |
---|---|
Minutes 1-10 | 2-4-3-7-4 |
Minutes 11-20 | 7-2-3-8-5 |
Minutes 21-30 | 2-5-8-4-2 |
Minutes 31-40 | 1-8-1-4-7 |
Minutes 41-50 | 3-8-7-5-8 |
Minutes 51-60 | 5-1-5-1-5 |
To be clear on how this workout is carried out, for minutes one and two, I did 12 dumbbell deadlifts. During the third and fourth minutes, I did 12 dumbbell chest presses on the floor, and during the fifth and sixth minutes, I did 12 single-arm dumbbell overhead shoulder presses. And yes, move six (air squat) never happens in this workout, but there are plenty of deadlifts, lunges, and burpees to make up for it!

Educate Yourself: 13 Podcast Episodes About Black Life in America to Download Right Now
If we're going to root out the systemic racism that pervades this country, Americans - white Americans, in particular - have enormous work to do. Before we can raise a new generation of antiracist children, we have to first turn inward and do the work of educating ourselves. It's not incumbent on members of the Black community to make us understand the brutal realities of racism - it's on the rest of us to take a seat, listen, and learn from the ample resources that already exist.
Below, we've rounded up a small sampling of podcast episodes that tackle issues from housing discrimination and historically racist land-ownership policies to police brutality and white fragility.

From Soccer to the NBA, Here's When Major US Sports Leagues Are Planning to Return
Some businesses and services are beginning to reopen in the wake of the coronavirus shutdown, but large gatherings are still prohibited in most areas. That means that professional sports - or at least, professional sports as we're used to experiencing them - will have a longer and more complicated path to return. The good news is that most major pro leagues are planning a comeback of some kind; the bad news is that we may not be able to see them in person for a while, maybe not until a vaccine is widely distributed.
Globally, the Korean Baseball Organization was one of the first pro leagues to resume play. The Bundesliga, Germany's elite soccer league, followed suit in mid-May. Keep reading to see how and when American pro sports are planning to return, and what you can expect to see when they do.
MLB
Major League Baseball and the MLB Players' Association are stuck in contract negotiations. The latest proposal from the MLBPA asks for a season of 89 games with full prorated pay (their full-season salary, but decreased based on the shortened playing time) and expanded playoffs, according to a source speaking to ESPN on June 10. Their proposed season would start July 10 and end Oct. 11. However, an MLB source told ESPN that this proposal was likely to be rejected. The MLB's current proposal, announced June 8, sets up a 76-game season and would pay players 75 percent of their prorated salaries. The regular season would end by Sept. 27.
The players' union is refusing anything less than full prorated pay. As an explanation for this hard stance, Washington Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle tweeted, "It's frustrating to have a public labor dispute when there's so much hardship. I hate it. But we have an obligation to future players to do right by them. We want to play. We also have to make sure that future players won't be paying for any concessions we make."
MLS
Major League Soccer is set to return July 8 with the MLS Is Back tournament. All 26 teams will participate, and the competition will be held in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex (part of the Walt Disney World Resort). The games will be played without fans but the matches will be televised; broadcast and streaming information haven't yet been released.
Each team will play a three-game group stage, with the top two teams in each group moving on to a round of 16 knockout stage. The final is scheduled for Aug. 11. Regular season play will resume after the tournament, though the full schedule has yet to be released. A regular postseason is also planned.
NBA
The National Basketball Association will return in late July with a 22-team format. Each team will play eight regular season games to determine seeding before moving into the playoffs, The Washington Post reported. The games will be played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World without fans in attendance.
NCAA Sports
So far, most of the focus has been on whether college football will be able to hold its season in the fall, and it's reasonable to assume that most other sports will follow a similar plan. The latest update, reported June 8 by ESPN, would plan for the season to begin on time (in late August and early September), with coaches beginning to work with players as early as July 6. Meetings and walk-throughs with a football would start in mid-July if the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) approves the current plan.
Much can change between now and the projected start of the season, and in a call with Congressional leadership, NCAA president Mark Emmert said that some teams may not return at all. However, leaders appeared confident that football will be played with at least some fans in the stands, according to Sports Illustrated.
NFL
The National Football League's season is still scheduled to begin on Sept. 10, with no word yet on whether fans will be able to attend games. Players are currently training remotely, with team training camps set to open in late July.
NHL
The National Hockey League's Return to Play Plan will have 24 teams compete to determine playoff seeding. Sixteen teams will play in eight best-of-five series while the top four teams in both conferences will play a round robin, setting rankings for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Still to be determined: the start date and two "hub cities" that will host the games.
NWSL
The National Women's Soccer League is set to be the first US sports league to return. The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup will kick off June 27 in Utah, with broadcast coverage on CBS All Access. No fans will be in attendance for the 25-game tournament, which all nine clubs will participate in. Each team will play four games, with the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
WNBA
No official statement has been made about the return of the Women's National Basketball Association. On June 4, ESPN reported that the league's current proposal is a 22-game regular season beginning July 24, and with playoffs ending in October, all played at a single site in Florida. The proposal was described as tentative and players have not yet agreed to its terms, according to ESPN's sources.
The Heartbreaking Reason Michael Jordan Decided to Pursue a Career in Baseball in 1994
Michael Jordan's career in basketball is the stuff of legend - as the docuseries The Last Dance shows - but did you know he spent a season playing baseball, too? Jordan's brief stint on the baseball diamond may seem like an unexpected detour, but in fact, it was a special tribute to his father, who died suddenly in 1993.
According to a Sports Illustrated retrospective, Jordan said he was "pursuing a dream of his late father, who always envisioned his son as a big leaguer." In August 1993, his father James Jordan's vehicle was found in North Carolina, and an investigation launched, since no one had heard from James since he traveled to Wilmington, NC, for a funeral. Authorities soon concluded that he had been shot and killed in a botched robbery, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Washington Post reported that his body was found in a swamp in South Carolina nearly two weeks after he was attacked on the side of the highway, but it was so badly decomposed that it wasn't immediately identified.
Jordan retired from the NBA two months later, sending shock waves through the sports world. He surprised fans again in February 1994, when he announced he had signed as a minor league baseball player with the Chicago White Sox, joining the Class AA team the Birmingham Barons. "It began as my father's idea," Jordan told The New York Times. "We had seen Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders try two sports and my father had said that he felt I could have made it in baseball, too. He said, 'You've got the skills.' He thought I had proved everything I could in basketball, and that I might want to give baseball a shot. I told him, 'No, I haven't done everything. I haven't won a championship.' Then I won it, and we talked about baseball on occasion, and then we won two more championships. And then he was killed."
At the age of 31, Jordan was a rookie right-fielder going up against younger prospects who had dedicated themselves to baseball from the start. He batted a mediocre .202, but according to Sports Illustrated, he was one of only six Class AA players with at least 50 RBIs and 30 steals. Jordan only played one season of baseball, however, returning to basketball in March 1995.
