How to Help Demand Justice For Elijah McClain Nearly a Year After His Tragic Death
It's been nearly a year since Elijah McClain was choked and beaten by three police officers in Aurora, CO, on Aug. 24, 2019. McClain died six days later after being pronounced brain dead, and the officers responsible were put on paid administrative leave and never apprehended. Amid ongoing protests addressing police brutality and racial inequality, many are just now learning about McClain's tragic death and subsequently demanding justice.
The 23-year-old massage therapist, described as a "sweet soul" by those who knew him, was walking home from buying iced tea at a local convenience store when a civilian called the police to report "suspicious" behavior. McClain was wearing a ski mask because his anemia would often make him run cold, and he was waving his arms, likely because he was dancing to music playing in his headphones.
"I am an introvert. Please respect my boundaries."
When officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema arrived at the scene, McClain was alarmed and a struggle reportedly ensued. The officers acted with aggression and one restrained McClain by placing him in a carotid hold. According to body camera footage later released by the Aurora Police Department, McClain can be heard saying, "Let me go. I am an introvert. Please respect my boundaries that I am speaking," before repeatedly stating he could not breathe. When paramedics arrived, they administered ketamine to sedate McClain, and he suffered two heart attacks.
Following renewed public interest, the Aurora Police Department announced several policy changes, including a ban on carotid hold and a duty to simply observe "suspicious" persons from afar, as opposed to immediately making contact. More can and should be done to adequately address the insurmountable loss McClain's family and community have faced. Below are just a few ways you can help in the fight for justice.
- Sign and share the petition calling for a full investigation and demanding that the officers involved be taken off duty.
- Donate to (or share) the fundraising campaign started by McClain's mother, Sheneen McClain. The GoFundMe was originally created when McClain was still alive and on life support, but is now dedicated toward a foundation in his name.
- Call Aurora elected officials. Check out this resource to find relevant phone numbers for Colorado representatives, as well as a helpful guide to what you can say when you call.
- Email Aurora officials. If you're stumped on what to write, let this useful template inspire your own emails. Tweak the wording of general templates or write your own emails to avoid your messages being overlooked or filtered out. How Puerto Rico Adapted to the Times and Is Preparing to Reopen the Country For Tourism
Puerto Rico's COVID-19 guidelines have been very strict. The island took dramatic steps to control the virus and protect its residents; as of July 2019, 21 percent of Puerto Rico's population was over the age of 65, which puts them at a higher risk of contracting and falling seriously ill from COVID-19.
Governor Wanda Vásquez Garced established a task force to look into how the virus would affect the island on Feb. 29, and the government took the position that every suspicious case was to be treated as a COVID-19 case and kept in isolation for 14 days while they wait for test results. On March 12, the governor declared a state of emergency and activated the Puerto Rico National Guard to help monitor travelers.
Citizens of Puerto Rico were put on a curfew and all nonessential businesses were ordered to close. Visitors and residents were told to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. The island saw its biggest spike in cases at the beginning of June, but has managed to keep the death toll relatively low, with an overall 6,820 confirmed cases and 149 deaths as of writing.
Now, the country has started slowly reopening, with tourism set to officially resume on July 15. Currently, face masks remain mandatory when in public. Beaches are open, but groups are not allowed, and social distancing is being enforced. Some spas, museums, and movie theaters are open, and restaurants have increased their capacity to 50 percent, as well as hotel pools. All commercial flights have been diverted to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, with Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla, and Mercedita International Airport in Ponce are expected to reopen on July 6.
The Puerto Rican National Guard is still at the Luis Muñoz Marín airport continuing to help improve health controls for arriving passengers and are even offering voluntary COVID-19 tests. Arriving passengers may be asked to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival; however, it's expected that the government will adjust some measures before the July 15 reopening.
Currently, curfew is still being enforced until June 30 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. with emergency exceptions.
The health and safety of visitors and residents remain a top priority, and the tourism industry in Puerto Rico is continuing updating important information should you choose to travel to the island once tourism resumes.

How I Retrained My Attention Span and Rediscovered My Love For Reading Books
As a kid, Scholastic book fairs were my personal all-you-can-eat buffet. Nancy Drew. A Series of Unfortunate Events. Goosebumps. The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley. Harry Potter. Junie B. Jones. Beezus and Ramona. I devoured books the way Bunnicula devoured carrot juice, drinking stories down to the last drop to sustain myself until I came across a new shelf lined with tales waiting to be told.
I was the kid who read during recess, who frequented the public library on weekends and stayed up way past my bed time just to squeeze in one more chapter of my newest treasure. I like to think Matilda Wormwood and I would have been great friends. But when I went away to college, I hardly had time to read the required textbooks, let alone indulge in my favorite pastime. As much as I longed to get lost in mysteries and fairytales, I had to prioritize school. Classes soon turned into work, and before I knew it, reading had been written off my to-do list altogether.
While I still don't have the time to devour story after story in a single day, reading for pleasure has become a regular part of my adult life in a way that my younger self would be happy to see.
Despite my lack of free time, I still visited book shops and requested books as gifts on every holiday and birthday, surrounding myself with the thing I loved in the hopes that I would finally rediscover that hunger for literature that once consumed me. But even when I did have free time at the end of a long day, I would find myself reaching for the remote or my phone instead of a book, ready to turn my brain off and let myself fall into a zombie-like trance in front of a screen. When I did find the energy to pick up a book again, I couldn't concentrate and had to force myself to re-read paragraph after paragraph because nothing would stick. When I couldn't even make it through a full page without getting distracted, I knew I had a problem.
Desperate to dive back into the world of magic and adventure, I set a list of goals for myself to achieve. After just a few days, I was on the path towards retraining my attention span and getting myself back on track to reading the books I longed to get lost in. Here's what I changed to get myself started:
Read the First Chapter
If you haven't read through an entire book in a while, tasking yourself with getting from beginning to end can seem pretty daunting. That's why I made it my goal to start with one of the many books I'd promised myself I'd get through someday and just read the first chapter. As simple as it might sound, getting through the first chapter of a book without setting it down to check my phone was a major struggle. It took nearly twice as long as I'd expected, but with each new chapter that I read, my focus became clearer and I became more and more invested in the plot. Before I knew it, I was halfway through my first book and my new goal was to reach the end.
Schedule 20-minute Windows For Reading
Given that I was no longer accustomed to staring at words on a page for more than a minute at a time, I knew I would have to immerse myself in the world of reading in a way that trained my brain to refocus. To do this, I set time goals for myself. For 15 then 20 then 30 (and so on) minutes at a time, I would sit down with a book and no screens to distract me. While I didn't have a page number to reach within the time I'd designated for myself, I found that having the structure of a time window for reading meant I was more focused, and my attention span quickly began to increase.
Read on the Go
While getting through the first chapter of a book was a journey, motivating myself to keep going after a couple chapters was even more difficult. No matter how invested in the story I was, I found countless ways to distract myself from returning to the book I was reading. As someone who loves being organized and having a plan, the solution was obvious: I made a schedule. Every morning and every afternoon on my bus commute to and from the city, I would stuff my phone into my pocket and pull out my latest novel, forcing myself to read through (and take in) as many pages as I could before I arrived at my stop. It took a little bit of getting used to, but after a week I was set in a routine that had me feeling like the kid with a book in her hands on the playground all over again.
Make Your Books Your Newest Accessory
I've made novels of all sizes and page lengths my newest accessory. The best part? They never go out of style. Just having a book on hand makes me more likely to pull it out when I have five minutes to spare, leaving me more fulfilled than if I'd played a game on my phone or scrolled through Instagram during my breaks throughout the day.
Join a Book Club
Since the start of my reading-related journey, I've joined two book clubs and created an ongoing two-person book club with my best friend. Even if I don't particularly like what we're reading that week or month, I've found that having conversations about the books brings them to life and encourages me to think more deeply about the words on the page. So whether the book is fiction, non-fiction, autobiography, or a book of poems, having that community of people around me who also love to read motivates me to dig up a new bookmark and delve into another world.
It's been over a year and a half since I started out on my quest to rediscover my love for reading, and I'm proud to say that I've made my way through dozens of new books. While I still don't have the time to devour story after story in a single day, reading for pleasure has become a regular part of my adult life in a way that my younger self would be happy to see.
At the end of a long day, I can curl up with a good book and feel more fulfilled than I would while taking in my latest Netflix obsession. I can order books without feeling guilty about letting them sit on a shelf for years on end before I get to them, and I can look forward to cracking open the spine of a hardback and letting myself be teleported to another universe over the weekend. A quick peek into my apartment will show stacks of books piled in the corners of almost every room, and I plan to make my way through all of them one page at a time.

"Now Is the Time": These WNBA Players Are Opting Out of a Season to Fight For Racial Justice
The WNBA season is set to start in late July, but at least three players will be opting out and using their time to fight for racial justice.
Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore, Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery, and Washington Mystics guard Natasha Cloud have all spoken out about their decisions to sit out the 2020 season to focus on social reform. It will be the second straight season missed by Moore, considered to be one of the most accomplished basketball players of all time, who has focused her efforts on criminal justice reform. Cloud and Montgomery have both come forward in the last week to announce their own decisions. "I have a responsibility to myself, to my community and to my future children to fight for something that is much bigger than myself and the game of basketball," Cloud (above) said in a statement.
During discussions on the WNBA's return, players were wary of starting play during a pandemic and in a moment where social justice issues are at the forefront, many expressed a desire to focus on reform, ESPN reported. "Amplifying the voices of our players is really important," said WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. "They do it all year round, and I think they can use this opportunity to be together to enhance what they're doing. We're going to work with them on that and support them in it."
"The league has said to us, 'You guys are at the wheel; whatever you want to do, we're going to try to make it happen,'" said Chiney Ogwumike, LA Sparks power forward and vice president of the WNBA Players' Association, in an interview with ESPN. Other WNBA players have opted out due to pandemic-related health concerns. Some stars, including Ogwumike and Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird, are planning to play but have used their platforms to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Read more on Moore, Montgomery, and Cloud's decisions ahead.
