Before The Ellen DeGeneres Show Returns to TV, Here's a Full Rundown of the Controversy
The ongoing saga of the Ellen DeGeneres controversy surrounding The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been one of the biggest entertainment stories of the year. Rumors about her exploded into major exposès and led to some serious negative press for the show, plus the departure of some high-level producers. Ahead, here's a complete breakdown of the controversy's timeline and what's happening now.
April 16, 2020: Variety Reveals Treatment of Union Workers During Shutdowns
An exclusive report in Variety revealed the frustration over treatment of crew members during COVID-19-related shutdowns. According to their investigation, the "core" stage crew, consisting of over 30 people who had been with the show prior to production shutdowns, were angry over a lack of communication over hours, pay, benefits, and overall health. When they did finally hear back from higher-ups, it was only to communicate a 60% pay cut.
Even more infuriating was the show's decision to set up Ellen's "from home" version of the show using almost none of the existing crew, instead hiring a new, non-union crew for the setup. Variety reported that the show hired a company based in Burbank to work on the technical production aspects, rather than bringing in the existing crew members with the same skills and jobs.
July 16, 2020: Buzzfeed Publishes Its Report on the "Toxic Work Environment"
The bombshell report from Buzzfeed alleged an ongoing and toxic culture behind the scenes at the show. "That 'be kind' bulls*** only happens when the cameras are on. It's all for show," one former employee was quoted as saying. Staffers recounted incidents like being fired for taking medical or bereavement leave, as well as fearing to report abuses out of concerns over retaliation from the higher-ups. One employee was reprimanded for posting a GoFundMe to cover medical costs that were outside the bounds of company insurance, reportedly because the show's higher-ups worried that having an employee seeking financial help would hurt their brand.
Some of the alleged toxicity was racist in nature. Buzzfeed's report includes a testimonial from a Black woman who recounted numerous instances of racist bullying and microaggressions. She reported the incidents, but never saw any improvements and in fact was reprimanded for being difficult, eventually leading to her walking off the job. "We've been feeling this way, but I've been too afraid to say anything because everyone knows what happens when you say something as a Black person. You're blacklisted," she told Buzzfeed.
Other employees detailed more of the toxicity, describing cliques in the office and a division between staffers who put up with everything and those who recognize the dysfunction. The problems went all the way to the top, many said - corroborating long-standing but much quieter rumors about Ellen herself - but managers were particularly difficult, blocking any attempts to make positive change.
July 27, 2020: The Ellen Show Undergoes Workplace Investigation
Less than two weeks following Buzzfeed's explosive report, WarnerMedia announced an investigation into the show, according to Variety. The company declined to comment on the record, but Variety also reported that WB-TV - the TV arm of WarnerMedia that produces The Ellen DeGeneres Show - was bringing in WarnerMedia's employee relations department, as well as a third party group, to work with employees and interview them on their experiences. Further information was not made available at the time, since it was an internal investigation.
July 30, 2020: Ellen Issues Apology Memo to Staffers
Days after the announcement of the internal investigation, Ellen herself issued a memo to staffers, which was obtained by several media outlets, including People. "On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry," the message began.
In the memo, Ellen confirmed the news of the investigation and promised an outcome that would "correct the issues." She also claimed that people were speaking on her behalf, without her authorization: "I'm also learning that people who work with me and for me are speaking on my behalf and misrepresenting who I am and that has to stop. As someone who was judged and nearly lost everything for just being who I am, I truly understand and have deep compassion for those being looked at differently, or treated unfairly, not equal, or – worse – disregarded. To think that any one of you felt that way is awful to me." She ended the memo with a promise to "be more mindful" and to make sure people feel safe speaking up.
July 30, 2020: Buzzfeed Publishes Report Alleging Harassment at the Ellen Show
Another Buzzfeed report broke that same day, alleging sexual harassment on the part of the show's executive producers. Producers Kevin Leman, Jonathan Norman, and Ed Glavin were specifically named in the report, with several allegations of him inappropriately touching, propositioning, or asking sexually explicit questions of staff members, often junior and less powerful staffers who could be intimidated into silence.
"You could definitely see the creep factor and the creepy touching. That was out in the open for everybody to see... Obviously, no one wants that and no one wants to be uncomfortably touched by someone … but you didn't want to [anger them] or you would be fired, so it was just that culture of fear," one former employee recounted. Several staffers also noted that the offending producers behaved differently in front of Ellen herself, but others weren't convinced. "She knows," a former employee said. "She knows s**t goes on, but also she doesn't want to hear it."
August 2020: Celebs Defend Ellen and Producers Depart
In early August, the controversy only got hotter when several celebrities came to Ellen's defense, sharing positive stories about their experiences with the host. Katy Perry, Kevin Hart, Ashton Kutcher, Alec Baldwin, and several others posted on social media supporting her. The backlash, however, was swift, as non-famous viewers pointed out that how a celebrity is treated is likely to be very different from how someone "unimportant" may be treated.
That being said, August also saw the departure of the three producers named in Buzzfeed's article, as well as another apology from Ellen. On Aug. 17, sources confirmed to People that Ellen filmed a video apology for her staff. "I'm a multi-layered person, and I try to be the best person I can be and I try to learn from my mistakes," she reportedly said, adding her hopes for moving forward when production resumes.
September 2020: The Ellen DeGeneres Show Resumes Production
According to Deadline, Ellen has said that she will be addressing the controversy when the show resumes this fall. Season 18 is set to premiere Monday, Sept. 21, filming in its usual studio on the Warner Bros. lot with the notable difference of no live studio audience. "I can't wait to get back to work and back to our studio. And, yes, we're gonna talk about it," Ellen said in the announcement of the season premiere. After everything that's gone down since the last time she's been in the studio, we're definitely curious what she'll have to say.

Mariah Carey Aced Tina Fey's Mean Girls Quiz, and Her Gretchen Wieners Impression Is So Fetch
Mariah Carey isn't a regular Mean Girls fan - she's the Mean Girls fan. To put her love for the iconic 2004 movie to the test, Tina Fey - aka Ms. Norbury and the screenwriter of the film - recently quizzed Carey on some of the most hilarious moments from the film, and she got Every. Single. Question. correct! "When the movie was first released, I watched it, literally, every night," Carey admitted in the Billboard video. "[Now,] my daughter's obsessed with it."
Not only is Carey a fan of the film, but she also showed up wearing her own initial necklace, just like the one Regina and Cady wear throughout the film. The quiz itself consisted of three "fetch" rounds - including "True or False," "General Trivia," and "Quotes From the Film" - all of which she absolutely nailed. Carey even did a spot-on impression of Gretchen Wieners bragging about her dad's Toaster Strudel career and pointed out that a poster from her Rainbow days makes a cameo in the movie.
Watch the full video to hear what Carey was like in high school and to learn more about Carey's potential cameo in the upcoming Mean Girls: The Musical movie adaptation.

Barbie Ferreira Discusses Unpregnant and Hopes For Euphoria Season 2: "I'm Ready For Any Curve Ball"
While Barbie Ferreira's Euphoria character, Kat Hernandez, walks the halls like she owns them, her Unpregnant character, Bailey, is the total opposite as a social outcast that sits alone at lunch. Unpregnant - which premiered on HBO Max on Sept. 10 - follows Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) who enlists her ex-best friend Bailey to take her on a road trip that changes their lives forever. The film tackles the important topic of abortion and how misinformation is easily spread - albeit, people aren't usually kidnapped by Breckin Meyer in the process. In a recent interview with POPSUGAR, Ferreira discussed her favorite scene to film, what she hopes people take away from the movie, and what she wishes for Kat in season two of Euphoria.
POPSUGAR: What was your favorite scene to film?
Barbie Ferreira: The car chases are probably my favorite because I love being loud - it was a lot of me and Haley just screaming in a car with a green screen.
PS: I loved how the movie touched on social media and how it's a big part of people's lives. Even though she was going on this really big journey, Veronica still felt the need to post. How do you use your platform on social media to speak about issues that are important to you?
BF: It's been a journey. When I was a model, I talked about a lot of different things that just really spoke to me. While I've kept up that energy now, I'm really trying to think of what to do outside of social media because it can be sort of performative. I still am vocal on political issues, but now it's also like how do I actually make a difference?
PS: Unpregnant is very similar to Euphoria in the way that it's raw and covers real issues. You're able to cover a topic like abortion in a manner that makes it seem less scary than what most people make it out to be. What do you hope people take away from this movie?
BF: First and foremost, I hope people get accurate information because there can be a lot of misinformation out there about reproductive health and reproductive access. [And second,] a great friendship story full of really funny, lighthearted, and heart-tugging moments - all of the stuff that comes from a feel-good movie.
PS: I definitely felt that it accomplished that, particularly with the car chase between the RV and the suburban when Haley yells out the window, "That's not true." She starts spouting off facts, and I was like, "Wow, we're learning things as we watch them get away from these lunatic kidnappers." What did you think about Haley's line to Breckin Meyer's character?
BF: Don't kidnap people. That's not good or legal. Haley's line is important because a lot of people in her character's position would feel guilt, shamed, or believe the misinformation. But, of course, Veronica has a really good head on her shoulders and is very autonomous and knows what she wants. She also knows exactly what's going on and her line debunks these very common myths that are circulated to this day, and I love that.
"Essentially, incorporating the humor with the darkness that comes with being a 17-year-old was my favorite part."
PS: What's your favorite part about playing Bailey?
BF: She's this really complicated character that deflects with a lot of humor, but is still very deeply emotional. She's also one of those ride-or-dies - she'll do anything without rhyme or reason. However, you understand throughout the movie why she does what she does, why she acts in a certain way, and all these little unique details that make everything make sense. Essentially, incorporating the humor with the darkness that comes with being a 17-year-old was my favorite part.
PS: What was your favorite part about her friendship with her ride-or-die, Haley Lu Richardson's character Veronica?
BF: I just love that they bonded over Star Trek. They were very carefree about judgment and weren't caught up in what people think little girls should like and they explored all of these different avenues together. It's sad that it kind of came to a halt because Veronica, of course, chose a different path growing up and Bailey was stuck on this other path.
"I want to play something completely outside of my comfort zone."
PS: You've accomplished so much already, but what kind of project or role do you hope to take on next?
BF: I want to play something completely outside of my comfort zone, which I think Unpregnant was a little. It was at least very different from Euphoria. I don't know, maybe I'll get a vampire slayer, wolf, ghost, possessed girl, or something. I'm up for anything.
PS: Much like Bailey, there's a lot more to your Euphoria character than meets the eye - can you give fans a hint as to what to expect from Kat's arc or what you hope for her in season two?
BF: What I love about Euphoria is that it throws curve balls, so I'm ready for any curve ball that Sam Levinson is going to throw at me. I have no idea what's going to happen, but I do hope that Kat evolves within the journey and gets to make different decisions. Teens are going to mess up and have to learn from their experiences, so I hope that she continues being her flawed yet bad*ss self, navigating the world and understanding what she likes and what she doesn't.
PS: Who from the Euphoria cast would you want to go on a road trip with?
BF: I would probably go with Alexa Demie because I love her and think we are really funny together.
PS: Is there an ideal road trip you'd like to go on?
BF: Maybe Colorado or somewhere really naturey with a lake or a river because I like to swim.
PS: What's a song you have to have on your road trip playlist?
BF: I've been listening to a lot of Nicki Minaj, as everyone around me knows, because I only play Nicki Minaj. But you know what, I'm actually going to switch it up for this one. I'm going to say "Hit Different" by SZA featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

Using a Folded Towel During Yoga Was the Simplest Solution for My Knee Pain
Ironically, my new favorite yoga prop has been in my possession years before I even owned a yoga mat - or had any idea what Child's Pose was. I'm talking about a simple folded towel or blanket. And even though I've always had one at my disposal, I only recently started adding it into my practice for the sake of my joints.
Every yoga instructor I've ever followed has advised those with sensitive knees in the class to cushion their joints with towels or blankets during certain weight-bearing poses. I actually have that very concern, but I've ignored the tip, thinking it couldn't possibly make my experience any more enjoyable. I'll also admit I never wanted to look weak in front of my peers.
Doing yoga exclusively at home - and really diving into the motivation behind my personal practice - helped me conquer so many of my insecurities. After I reached for that towel and tucked it under my knees during Camel Pose, I finally got to feel that glorious stretch in my lower back and shoulders without painful pressure in my knees. I only wish I took advantage of my instructors' advice sooner - it was only there to help me.
Tess Koenig, a yoga instructor based in New York City, prefers students use props rather than force a posture or deal with pain in a pose, and offers the use of a towel or blanket in positions where the bone may be supported by the ground in weight-bearing positions.
"Towels and blankets offer that support to help you maintain your breath on your knees, as does a mat folded over twice if those props are not available to you," Koenig says.
While there are many poses that could benefit from a folded towel or a blanket as a prop, Koenig specifically mentions Cat/Cow, Modified Push-Up or Chaturanga, and Camel Pose.
"Typically we see Cat/Cow in the beginning of practice, when our bodies are still warming up, which is even more so a reason to use padding instead of forcing your way through discomfort as your body is lubricating for practice," Koenig says.
During Modified Push-Up or Chaturanga, Koenig says you're rolled onto the front of your knee caps during optimal alignment: "that can be a lot to maintain for many repetitions or during vinyasa."
To make Camel Pose more comfortable, Koenig recommends evenly laying out a towel or a blanket and kneeling on it with your knees - hip width-distance apart - before settling into the posture.

Every Room in This DIY Disney-Themed House Is Inspired by a Different Movie
They say Disneyland is the happiest place on earth, where fans go to experience the unique worlds of their favorite Disney characters and get a taste of that same magic. That's why Kelsey Hermanson decided to transform her house into her own magical kingdom. Bringing the spark and adventure of the parks into her space, the mom of two decorated each room in her house to portray a different classic movie from the franchise, including a Cinderella-themed master bedroom to a bathroom entirely inspired by Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Known as Kelseymichelle85 on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, the DIY-er replicates the dreamy aesthetic from Disney's attractions and films in her family home.
"I like to create a space to feel like you're in a scene from the movie," Kelsey told POPSUGAR. "I make a lot of my decor myself, but I also like to repurpose thrift store finds into my designs. It might look expensive, but the true story is I did it all on a budget." She's also found vintage pieces and antique furniture on Facebook Marketplace, Amazon, and Disney stores while traveling, as she explained in TikTok videos featuring her home.
Each room is certainly mesmerizing in itself for its gorgeous depiction of the movies, but what's most fascinating are the special details that have resonated with Disney fans, like the Genie faucets in the Aladdin master bathroom and the tiny door in the Alice in Wonderland powder room. Of the 11 rooms she's remodeled so far, Kelsey's favorite is the Cinderella master bedroom, which is the most recent space she's worked on. "I love the colors and overall dreamy aesthetic," she said. "It truly feels like you are sleeping in Cinderella's bedroom."
While Kelsey has been meticulously furnishing and embellishing her house for the past three years, her house is still a work in progress. She told POPSUGAR that when the holidays roll around, she makes some fun upgrades, like decorating the living room in a Coco theme, instead of its usual Lilo & Stitch vibe, as well as adding The Nightmare Before Christmas decor and a pink coral Christmas tree inspired by Ariel's Christmas Under the Sea. "Our house really gets magical at Christmas," she said. The mom is also currently working on the details in her daughters' princess-themed playroom, which she most recently transformed.

Flutter Kicks Count as Cardio Plus an Ab and Leg Workout - Here’s Why
Flutter kicks deserve some long-overdue credit. The exercise isn't just for ab-sculpting, despite its reputation. Yes, your abs are working hard, but so much more is going on that doesn't get talked about enough.
"Flutter kicks are a great way to target the core and leg muscles. By doing them properly, you can work on core stabilization while working your quads and hip flexors for an added twist," Leada Malek, DPT, CSCS, says.
"Maintaining a stable core while moving limbs is called dynamic core stability, and it's especially functional for everyday life! It also directly activates major lower extremity muscles."
Long story short, flutter kicks target your transverse abdominis, rectus abdominis, obliques, hip flexors, and glute while stabilizing your lumbar spine, Malek explains.
That's why Malek says flutter kicks can be included in just about any core or leg workout. Her favorite is to incorporate them into a HIIT session for an added cardio boost. That's right, the repetitive kicking motion counts as cardio because it can increase your heart rate.
Just keep in mind that if your lower back is arching off the ground mid-move, chances are you're lifting your legs too high - Malek says it's the most common flutter-kick mistake people make.
"That's why it's so crucial to tuck the tailbone and stabilize the core before lifting the legs. Without this, it's common to feel some popping or snapping in the hip joint or, in some cases, low back pain," she says.
"Additionally, letting the legs bend while fluttering and losing full knee extension can cause a lag effect and some extra strain on the low back."
Without stabilizing the low back and pelvis, lifting the legs can end up pulling the low back into extension, Malek adds.
Yes, that's a lot to think about, but Malek's step-by-step instructions for doing flutter kicks will help simplify things a bit. She suggests trying this move 2-3 times a week as part of a 20-30 minute resistance-training routine. But, listen to your body and do what you're comfortable with - remember to take breaks and modify when needed.
Flutter Kick
- Lie flat on the ground with your arms extended by your sides.
- Tuck your tailbone in and brace your core, alternate kicking straight legs a few inches off the ground.
- Don't let your low back arch off the ground and make sure your legs stay straight.
- Stop at a hover above the ground and keep fluttering until your set is complete.
- Maintain relaxed shoulders if you can, and keep breathing through a stable core.
- If this is uncomfortable, you can modify by placing your hands under your lower back (palms down) for added stability.
Modified Flutter Kick
- Sit with your legs straight out in front and hands propped behind you with your fingers pointing towards your toes.
- Recline about 45 degrees with the support of your forearms.
- From there, keep your legs straight, and lift them off the floor.
- Alternating flutter kicking while keeping your legs straight - just 2-3 inches off the floor. Do not touch them to the ground.
- You can increase the intensity by raising your legs six inches off the ground.
