What to Do If Your Cat Sucks on Blankets, According to Vets
From sitting in the bathtub to chewing on their owner's hair, cats exhibit many strange behaviors that often leave humans scratching their heads. But there's one behavior that absolutely melts even the toughest hearts - blanket sucking. Of course, pet owners that live with a blanket sucker may not find this all that cute. Although it's typically a harmless behavior, it's one that most cat owners find annoying, said Jessica Herman, DVM, adviser at Fuzzy Pet Health. But why do cats suck on blankets? POPSUGAR turned to the experts to discover the real meaning behind this feline behavior and ways to prevent (and distract) your sassy furball from blanket sucking.
Why Does My Cat Suck on Blankets?
There are a few reasons that cats suck on blankets. One likely reason is that they were weaned from their mother too early, said Mikel Delgado, PhD, a cat behavior researcher at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Kittens typically stay with their mother until they are fully weaned, which happens around 3 months old.
The breed of the cat may also affect your kitty's sucking habits, Delgado told POPSUGAR. This is because certain breeds, such as the Siamese, have a tendency to suck on blankets.
Cats may also suck on blankets and fabric in general because they're repeatedly rewarded for the behavior, said Matthew McCarthy, DVM, owner of Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Middle Village, NY. For example, "if your cat likes to snuggle with you and nibbles on your sweater or a nearby blanket a little while doing so, it's kinda nice and you may reciprocate with some soft talk and rubs," he said. A learned behavior such as this typically develops at a young age and often continues through a cat's life with no problem.
Another reason cats may develop a blanket-sucking habit is because they have a medical condition, Dr. McCarthy said. Adult cats that suddenly develop blanket sucking with no apparent underlying trigger may have an underlying medical disorder. Such health problems are not always obvious and will require lab work, radiographs, and advanced diagnostics to reach a diagnosis, he said. Because of this, if such a behavior develops in your adult cat, you should consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.
The final reason has to do with stress or anxiety, Dr. McCarthy said. Indoor cats often do not have enough activities to keep them active and stimulated. As a result, some cats may choose to engage in blanket sucking as a way of easing their stress and anxiety, he said.
Should I Be Concerned About Blanket Sucking?
Most kittens outgrow this behavior around 10 to 12 months of age, as it's when they reach social maturity, Dr. Herman said. That said, some cats may continue to exhibit this behavior with reduced intensity and frequency later on in life. You should consult your veterinarian if the behavior becomes excessive or destructive, she said.
This is because in some cases the behavior may intensify, affecting your cat's normal daily activities like playing and eating, Dr. McCarthy said. In other instances, the behavior may transition from sucking on fabric to ingesting the fabric, which can lead to a life-threatening gastric or intestinal blockage.
How Can I Stop My Cat From Sucking on Blankets?
You should first notify your veterinarian about the behavior to confirm that there is no medical cause behind it, Delgado said.
If no medical disorder is found, Dr. Herman suggests limiting your cat's access to the fabrics they like to suck on to stop blanket sucking. For example, "If your cat has a favorite blanket he or she sucks on, rid of the blanket," she said. "If your cat only sucks on blankets on your bed, do not allow your cat access to your bedroom." You should also never pet or engage with your cat when he or she is exhibiting the sucking behavior, since this may encourage the behavior. The key to eliminating blanket sucking is not encouraging or reinforcing the behavior, Dr. Herman said. She further stressed the importance of never punishing your cat for the sucking behavior because it can cause additional behavior problems.
Sometimes the behavior can be redirected by you providing your cat with other oral enrichment outlets too, Delgado said, referencing cat chew toys, cat grass, and food puzzles as healthy alternatives. Lastly, you should make sure that your cat's environmental needs are met. Setting up the right environment for your kitty includes having several cozy spaces to rest, vertical space to climb, toys and playtime, scratching posts, clean litter boxes, and plenty of gentle attention from their humans, Delgado said.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Chat With Malala About the Importance of Girls' Education
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated International Day of the Girl on Oct. 11 with an exemplary young leader, Malala Yousafzai. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a virtual chat with Malala to emphasize the need for equal education worldwide and bring attention to the lack of opportunities for girls specifically.
As the group discussed, there are "barriers preventing 130 million girls from going to school," with the potential to inhibit even more as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. "When young girls have access to education, everyone wins and everyone succeeds. It just opens the door for societal success at the highest level," Meghan said, explaining why it's essential for people to pay attention to this issue.
Malala, a recent university graduate herself, elaborated on the dangers that can befall girls who don't engage in active schooling. "An additional 20 million more girls are at risk of dropping out of school because of this pandemic," she told Harry and Meghan. "They're at risk of never being able to return to their schools because they are likely to be pushed into early child marriages or they might become the breadwinners or financial supporters of their families."
Meghan responded: "It's not just robbing a society of the cultural richness that comes with educating young girls. It's also robbing these young girls of childhood." Harry agreed and noted that education for girls also goes hand in hand with combating climate change. "The importance of girls' education to help defer climate change is absolutely critical," he said. "An education provides money, provides an income, which makes you less susceptible to disaster." The Length of Your Ab Workout Doesn't Matter; It's All About the Quality to Get a Strong Core
I feel like most people think their workouts have to be a minimum of one hour in length in order for them to be considered "good," and that's the furthest thing from the truth. The length of a workout is not directly correlated with how effective or good the workout is, especially when it comes to ab workouts - in fact, a five-minute ab workout can totally be effective, as long as you're doing a variety of exercises that target different core muscles and you have good form.
You may not know this, but even if you aren't doing specific ab-strengthening exercises like planks and bear holds, you're more than likely still strengthening your core. For example, exercises like deadlifts and glute bridges target muscles in your lower body, but they also work your abs! You don't need to spend 30-plus minutes training your core, and I'd actually recommend against it. Instead, you could be spending time focusing on exercises that target muscle groups in your legs and arms, helping improve your overall strength and allowing you to move better, while simultaneously targeting your core.
It's OK to add a quick ab circuit to the end of your workout for core-specific strength training. And if you do this, I advise making sure you mix up the exercises to prevent overtraining one part of your core and undertraining another part. For example, you don't just want to do a bunch of forearm plank variations, as that will primarily work your anterior core (your rectus abdominis muscles, aka your six-pack muscles, and your transverse abdominis muscles, which are deep core muscles), which stabilizes your lumbar spine (lower spine) and pelvis.
Instead, you can and should mix it up and also incorporate exercises that work your lateral core, like side planks, to prevent too much side flexion and prevent you from falling over to the side; exercises that work your posterior core, like Bird Dog and deadlifts, to avoid excessive rounding of the lumbar spine; and rotational exercises, like Russian twists and chops, which help prevent too much lumbar spine rotation.
If you're worried about the length of your ab workout, don't be. As long as you're working all the muscles in your core and modifying or progressing the intensity of each exercise or workout contingent upon your needs and fitness level, you'll be fine!

The Best Part of SNL's "Enough Is Enough" Skit Was Jason Momoa's Hilarious Cameo
Saturday Night Live included a very special guest star this week: Jason Momoa. During the Oct. 10 episode, the Aquaman actor made a quick cameo in the "Enough Is Enough" skit. In the video, Beck Bennett plays an actor who posts an Instagram video against President Trump which quickly goes viral for the wrong reasons. We then see Bennett have multiple conversations with his friends who promptly tell him to take down the video. Of course, the funniest moment was at the end of the skit when he received a FaceTime from Momoa himself, who also tells him to take down the video and untag him from the post. Watch the full skit above for Momoa's brief but funny cameo.

Is it just us, or are Crocs having a major moment right now? It seems like the brand has gotten a lot of street cred recently, thanks to its latest celebrity collaborations. Let's Take a Minute to Dissect The Haunting of Bly Manor's Emotional Ending
The Haunting of Bly Manor ties up its intricately woven ghost story with an ending that's both sweet and heartbreaking. Dani's sacrifice keeps the Lady in the Lake at bay, and both residents and spirits cursed by Bly find some semblance of peace. Flash forward 20 years, the end also takes us back to the wedding in 2007, where we learn how the storyteller and bride relate to this emotional tale. Ultimately, The Haunting of Bly Manor concludes with a happily ever after that bears an inkling of tragedy. There's a lot to unpack in what it all means, so let's get to it.
How the Curse Get Lifted
The end begins with the Lady in the Lake dragging Dani back into Bly Manor. After Flora's pleas, the Lady lets Dani go and takes Flora instead. Meanwhile, Peter Quint is fully possessing Miles. Uncle Henry feels in his bones that something is wrong and drives straight to Bly - only for the Lady in the Lake to knock him out when he's there. Likewise, Owen and Jamie go straight to the manor as well, and Hannah, now aware that she's a ghost, directs them to the lake. When the Lady in the Lake, aka Viola, comes close to drowning Flora, Dani frantically says, "It's you, it's me, it's us." When Dani lets Viola in, she effectively lifts the curse on Bly Manor, freeing the spirits from Viola's grasp. After, everyone packs up to leave Bly. They find Hannah's body down the well, and Owen takes care to clean her up because of how much he loves her.
Where Everyone Goes After Bly
Henry takes the children to America, and Flora gives Dani her doll before leaving. Because she invites Viola into her, Dani now must live with Viola in the back of her head. Jamie promises to keep her company, and they have many happy years together in the United States, opening a flower shop and moving in together. They informally marry, celebrating in France at Owen's restaurant. Owen tells them about the Wingraves - the children are all grown up now, but they don't remember anything about Bly.
After years of bliss, Dani finally sees Viola in reflections. The Lady in the Lake initially frightens Dani, but over time, Viola's presence wears down on her, and Dani begins to lose herself. Worrying that she would hurt Jamie, Dani returns to Bly. Jamie later finds Dani at the bottom of the lake. In fact, Dani is now the new Lady in the Lake, though a much more peaceful one than Viola. Following Dani's death, Jamie leaves doors slightly open, looks into reflections, and holds water in the sink and tub - just in case Dani returns to her.
What Happens to the Narrator and Bride
After the story ends, we return to the year 2007 after taking a deep dive into the '80s. The bride and storyteller share a moment alone. The bride wonders if the narrator made the story up based on her middle name, Flora. Coincidence? Probably not.
At the reception, the narrator raises her glass to the Englishman who toast the couple at the beginning. He's standing next to a younger gentleman. When the shot switches, we see Owen and Miles as they appear in 1987. The camera then moves to the bride and an older man. Again, when the shot switches, a younger Flora and Henry appear. And at last, we see young Jamie staring out at them wistfully.
When Jamie gets back to her room, she looks into the tub and sink, searching for any hint of Dani. Before sleeping on her chair, Jamie leaves her door slightly ajar. In the final, bittersweet shot, we see the back of Jamie's head (now with darker hair) as a hand rests on her shoulder. The hand has a ring on it, and the arm is covered by a mauve sweater, similar to the one Dani used to wear at Bly Manor. Could Dani be tucking her away? Hopefully, she's dream hopping to the sweetest memory.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for this heartfelt horror anthology to get a third season - maybe Flora has some extra talismans for good luck.

You May Not Be Storing Your Masks Properly - Here's What Doctors Want You to Know
Do you have face masks stashed everywhere? In the center console of your car, in your handbags, in your jacket pockets? Hold up! It's great to have masks readily available (good on you for being responsible), but you may need to reconsider how you're storing them, in order to ensure you're mitigating the spread of bacteria and viral particles.
Whether your mask is clean or dirty, you don't want it rubbing up against other surfaces you touch frequently. "Don't store it in your purse or loosely in your car, for example, because it can cause cross-contamination," Kristen Dean, MD, a family medicine physician and medical director of Doctor On Demand, told POPSUGAR.
If you want to keep a mask in these spots, placing it inside a paper bag is your safest bet. "The best, most sanitary storage for our masks is in a cool, dry, breathable place that avoids contact with other surfaces. You can store it in a paper lunch bag, [which is] breathable for the mask," said Natasha Bhuyan, MD, family physician and West Regional Medical Director at One Medical. This aligns with guidance issued to healthcare workers, in which the Centers For Disease Control recommended either hanging up medical-grade masks or storing them in a "clean, breathable container such as a paper bag." Dr. Bhuyan explained that the breathability of the bag "helps avoid any mildew growth."
Where Should I Keep My Masks at Home?
If you want your masks to be more accessible, you might consider designating a key hook or some wall hooks next to your front door. "Many people find it's easiest to hang their mask from a hook to avoid the mask touching other surfaces," Dr. Bhuyan told POPSUGAR. Plus, you'll be less likely to forget your mask if you have to pass it on your way out.
Of course, if a mask has already been worn, you should either toss it if it's disposable, or try to wash it immediately if it's made with reusable fabric. "Remember, the outside of your mask is considered to be 'dirty,'" Dr. Bhuyan said. "We should wash our masks after each usage. That includes if you are wearing your masks for a few hours or an entire day."
Keeping Your Mask As Sterile As Possible While You Wear It
Mask care isn't just limited to frequent cleanings or sanitary storage - how you wear it and hold it throughout the day matters, too. "You should wash your hands before putting on a face mask, if you touch the mask while wearing it, and after you take off a used mask," Dr. Dean explained. Avoid touching the fabric, face-covering portion of the mask altogether; instead, "use the ear loops to put on and remove the mask," she said.
In addition, Dr. Dean said not to "store" the mask on your forehead or chin. "Please remember, if your mask is not covering your mouth and nose at all times, you are not wearing the mask correctly," Dr. Dean said. "Wearing a mask the wrong way is not effective in reducing the transmission of COVID-19. As a reminder, it is not recommended to pull your mask down to talk with people. This can put others at risk."
Sandra Kesh, MD, deputy medical director and infectious disease specialist at Westmed Medical Group in Westchester, NY, noted that wearing your mask improperly can also put you at risk. "Don't pull your mask below your chin while you're wearing it," Dr. Kesh told POPSUGAR. "Leaving the mask dangling or improperly fitted to your face creates opportunities for cross-contamination."

Comfy Clothing Helps Relieve My Acid Reflux Symptoms - Here's What I'm Shopping
Every time I put on my tightest jeans or most form-fitting dress, my body loves to hit me with a spell of acid reflux. It's almost like a running joke - my body waits for me to take a swig of red wine and boom, I instantly regret passing up on sweats.
In those moments, my instincts to run home and change are on point. Dr. Kristen Lee, MD, a gastroenterologist associated with Manhattan Gastroenterology, confirms that wearing loose-fitting clothes can help relieve acid reflux symptoms due to decreased pressure on your stomach.
That's why comfort is now top of mind when shopping for new clothing - and I'm following through on that promise by filling my closet with airy outfits perfect for dressier occasions, casual hangouts, and afternoons in.
Here's a peek into my virtual shopping carts for anyone who needs help diffusing that fiery, agitative pain.

Joey King Wants You to Vote - and Get a Bob Haircut While You're at It
It's been a busy day full of errands for Joey King. Not only did she drop off her early mail-in ballot for the 2020 election, but she also got a major haircut. Instead of the long, layered style she's sported for the last few months, King is now rocking a short, soft blunt bob.
In a carousel of images posted on Oct. 8, King showed off her new hairstyle, complete with the "Vote" face mask that she wore to the salon. "Who has short hair now and voted today?!?! THIS GAL," read the caption. The second image she shared was of the designated box in Los Angeles where she dropped off her completed ballot and a thumbs up.
King is no stranger to short hair or experimenting with her look. Over the years, she's had everything from a buzz cut to bleached-blond hair, pink highlights, and bangs - and she always looks amazing.
An Open Letter to the Cast of Supernatural: Thank You and Carry On
Dear Supernatural Cast,
We've never met, but all of you mean a lot to me. Over the years, Supernatural has helped me find comfort and courage when I've needed it the most, and that wouldn't have been possible without you all. The list of shows that consistently bring me peace is short, and, perhaps ironically, Supernatural is on that list. Whatever I'm dealing with or healing from, I always know I can count on the Winchester boys - and the Supernatural universe as a whole - to make me feel safe. I can't count how many nights I've fallen asleep to Sam and Dean conversing in the Impala, and while that may not sound like a compliment, trust me when I tell you that it is.
I started watching the show during the summer of 2015, and I was instantly a fan. I'd recently broken up with a long-term boyfriend who'd grown increasingly abusive and toxic over the course of nearly four years. After the abuse I'd experienced during that relationship - plus the unwanted experiences I'd endured at the hands of other men and boys throughout my life - it was healing to see two male characters entirely devoted to protecting people, with more good men joining their cause along the way.
As a bisexual woman, it was also incredibly empowering to watch Felicia Day's character, Charlie, be so visibly and unashamedly queer (and nerdy) over the course of the show. As someone who was born and raised in the Bible Belt, I can attest that representation like hers is no small thing. Charlie's courage, authenticity, and distaste for authority may not be the reason I came out in a big way in 2016, but it certainly didn't hurt.
I've also found myself inspired by the show during my travels. In my late twenties, I took my Chevy on multiple cross-country road trips across the United States, and I couldn't help but think of Supernatural each time. I'm sure this was partly because I've always got classic rock giants - like Led Zeppelin and ACDC - in my Spotify queue, but it was also because Supernatural captures the joy of driving a car you've grown to love and depend on - whether you're crossing multiple state lines in pursuit of a goal or you're picking up beer and pie from the store. Sadly, I've had to cancel several road trips in 2020, but watching Supernatural makes me feel excited for the day I can criss-cross the country again.
I can't speak for the entire Supernatural fandom, and I'm no psychic, but I'm confident the show will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to everyone who enjoys it and identifies with its characters. I know Supernatural will always be special to me, and I'm grateful to be part of the community it's inspired.
Thank you all so much for all your hard work over the years, and for your ongoing dedication to the Supernatural family.
Carry on,
Liz
