Yep, Apple Is Releasing a New iPhone 12, but Don't Throw Out Your Power Adapter Just Yet

Hold onto your AirPods, because Apple is releasing a new iPhone 12 in four different styles, and it's missing a few of our favorite accessories. The lineup includes an iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max; all models will boast 5G and new features that make each phone more durable, more powerful, and more environmentally friendly.

Each model includes a new Ceramic Shield front cover, which is tougher than any smartphone glass and protects your screen from cracking or getting damaged. And, as someone who's dropped their phone on the floor too many times to count, I'm highly intrigued. For iPhone Pro and Pro Max users, the phones will also come in four stainless steel finishes, including graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.

So What Are These New Features, Exactly?

All four phones will also be compatible with MagSafe magnetic chargers and will be programmed with A14 Bionic, a smartphone chip that increases the phone's speed and performance by up to 50 percent, allowing for higher-quality photography, console-quality gaming, and a longer battery life. After adding on so many cool new features, it's no surprise Apple is also taking away a few of our favorite accessories with the new release. As part of its mission to reduce carbon emissions and achieve a net zero climate impact by 2030, the company is removing the power adapter (or block charger) and EarPods from iPhone packaging. So, if you don't happen to have a pair of earphones or an adapter on hand, you'll have to buy them separately.

But what's the real catch? The starting price for the iPhone 12 Mini is $699, followed by the iPhone 12 at $799, the iPhone 12 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1,099. So, unless you've been saving up, testing out the new iPhone 12 for yourself could put a considerable dent in your bank account. Personally, the superdurable screen cover still has me kind of tempted to trade in my old iPhone X. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will be available for preorder beginning Friday, Oct. 16, and available for purchase on Friday, Oct. 23, while the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max will be available for preorder beginning Friday, Nov. 6, and available for purchase on Nov. 13.

Before you decide on a phone for yourself, take a sneak peek at each model in the iPhone 12 lineup and find out more about their new features.

Ted Cruz's Comments on Birth Control Are Factually Incorrect - Here's Why That's a Problem

In the midst of Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearings on Oct. 13, Senator Ted Cruz misdefined birth control in a misleading and problematic way. Namely, he referred to birth control as "anti-abortion drugs."

To catch you up, Cruz brought up birth control when discussing implied threats to religious freedom. He specifically referenced the Supreme Court case of The Little Sisters of the Poor Saints Peter and Paul Home v. Pennsylvania. In this case, the Little Sisters of the Poor asked for exemption from the part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires health plans to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods. Key word: contraceptive. (The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that organizations could opt out of this requirement for religious and moral reasons.)

In the hearing, Cruz said, "The Little Sisters of the Poor, our Catholic Convent of nuns, who take oaths of poverty, who devote their lives to caring for the sick, caring for the needy, caring for the elderly, and the Obama administration litigated against the Little Sisters of the Poor, seeking to fine them in order to force them to pay for abortion-inducing drugs among others."

Buried in the rhetoric is a glaring error. Cruz is saying that contraceptives are "abortion-inducing drugs," which is medically inaccurate. Here's why.

Why Contraceptives Don't Cause Abortions

Pregnancy officially begins when a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterine lining. According to the New York Times, anti-abortion groups use the phrase "abortion-inducing" to describe methods that they say can prevent this implantation from happening.

As the NYT explains, this assumption is already incorrect; if pregnancy does not begin until implantation, a contraceptive that prevents implantation can't be called abortion-inducing, because there is not yet a pregnancy to terminate. (Implantation, not fertilization, is considered the beginning of pregnancy because many fertilized eggs naturally fail to implant in the uterus.) Regardless, nearly all forms of birth control do not prevent pregnancy in this way. Rather, they prevent eggs from being fertilized at all, one step before implantation would even occur. Here's how several of the most popular forms of birth control work.

  • Combination birth control pills: Combination birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin. Taking the pills every day prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation, as well as altering the cervical mucus and uterine lining to keep sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Progestin-only birth control pills: Unlike combination birth control pills, progestin-only pills do not contain estrogen. These pills do not also suppress ovulation as consistently as combination pills. They prevent pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining, stopping sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Hormonal IUD: An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small plastic device inserted into the uterine. A hormonal IUD releases progestin, which prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and preventing ovulation.
  • Copper IUD: A copper IUD, which does not use hormones, may be able to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. However, it is also effective at preventing fertilization, because the copper changes the way sperm cells move, making it so they can't swim to an egg.
  • Emergency contraceptive pills: Emergency contraceptives are taken in the days immediately following unprotected sex. They prevent pregnancy by delaying ovulation, or the release of an egg from your ovary.

Birth control by definition does not end a pregnancy; it prevents it from happening in the first place. As reproductive health continues to be a political talking point, it's crucial to hold politicians accountable on these key points, which have a direct effect on our bodies and lives.

Doctors Explain Why You Feel So Thirsty Just Before Bed

It's finally time to hit the sheets - except now you're suddenly in the mood to chug a few bottles of water. What gives? If you can't stop refilling the glass on your bedside table, you're not alone: it's common to feel thirsty just before falling asleep. According to doctors, there are a few reasons why you're pouring another glass when all you want is some shut-eye.

Our biological clock may be one of the biggest culprits of our late-night thirst. We all have a circadian rhythm that fine-tunes the production of hormones related to the position of the sun, explained Nikola Djordjevic, MD, a general practitioner and medical adviser at Whatasleep. "In the evening, we produce melatonin, which not only makes our mind sleepy, but also triggers the sleeping state of cells in which they repair and regenerate," Dr. Djordjevic told POPSUGAR. "Our body knows that hours without hydration are ahead, and it recharges our fluid supply, hence, the increased thirst at night."

But as much as biology is to blame for feeling dehydrated after hours, our lifestyle choices play a role as well. The big meals we eat for dinner, like the frozen pizzas heated up an hour before bed, tend to be packed with salt. "We actually have a 'thirst center' in our brains that makes us feel thirsty when our serum sodium level increases, such as when consuming salty food," said Jesse P. Houghton, MD, FACG, senior medical director of gastroenterology at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

The truth is, many of us aren't staying adequately hydrated throughout the day, which inevitably catches up to us in the evening. And no, coffee and cocktails won't cut it. "It's good practice to drink water throughout the day, as doing so provides a wide range of benefits, such as proper detoxification, better energy and digestion, and even improved brain function," Joel Kahn, MD, FACC, a clinical professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and scientific adviser for RDCL Superfoods, told POPSUGAR. "The fact is that every cell in the human body needs water to function optimally." We'll drink (a tall glass of seltzer) to that!

Solange Styled Herself For a Photo Shoot Using All Independent and Majority BIPOC Designers

Solange continues to raise the bar and shatter the boundaries of modern style. The 34-year-old musician wore many hats for her newly published feature in Harper's Bazaar's digital magazine - she shared personal essays and poems in place of an article, asked friend Naima Green to be her photographer, and styled herself with items selected from independent, majority-BIPOC designers. The result is something truly stunning.

Her outfits are compiled with pieces from a vast roster of talented fashion creators. She sticks largely to an earth-tone palette, gravitating toward structured blazers and over-the-knee boots, while at the same time making room for comfy sets and crop tops. In a way, this works hand-in-hand with an idea Solange expresses in her essay, that she sees a "duality" in her digital covers and in herself. "I feel a lot of freedom in not having to chose to exist as one," she said.

Keep reading to see Solange's uninhibited style selections, and make sure to check out her full essays and poems on Harper's Bazaar.

Meghan Markle Sheds Light on the Harmful Effects of Social Media: "It's an Addiction"

Meghan Markle has been very outspoken about the dangers of social media and how harmful online trolling can be. During another conversation with Fortune for its Most Powerful Next Gen Summit on Tuesday, the Duchess of Sussex doubled down on her message and revealed that she hasn't been on social media for "a very long time" for her "own self-preservation."

"I've made a personal choice to not have any account, so I don't know what's out there, and in many ways that's helpful for me," she explained. "I have a lot of concerns for people that have become obsessed with it. And it is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it's an addiction like many others."

"You have the power to turn this around."

As for how to engage on social media in a healthy way, Meghan said it's important to be "conscious" and "responsible." She added, "Understand that it is not limited to that one moment, that you are creating an echo chamber for yourself. The more that you engage with things that are negative – not just for other people that you might not know but what it's doing to you as a human being - will really have lasting effects . . . you have the power to turn this around."

Meghan also shut down those rumors that she used to run her and Prince Harry's official Sussex Royal account, saying she there was a "whole team" behind it. Watch Meghan's interview in the clip above.

20 Years Later, The Little Vampire Is Still One of the Cutest Halloween Movies I've Seen

Back when Disney Channel's Monstober Halloween event was known as Hauntoberfest, I would stay up past my bedtime to watch red-eyed vampire cows enact their revenge on a rogue vampire hunter, and I loved every second of it. If you've never seen 2000's The Little Vampire, think of it as an unexpected mashup between Under Wraps and The Addams Family with some blood-thirsty cattle thrown in for good measure. With nothing better to do than mix up a bloody-red cocktail and soak up all the nostalgic Halloween content my brain can recall, I rewatched this movie for the first time since it came out 20 years ago, and it's a freakin' riot.

The movie follows Tony Thompson (Jonathan Lipnicki), a vampire-obsessed 9-year-old who just moved to Scotland with his parents and is having some trouble fitting in. After an IRL vampire child named Rudolph mistakes Tony for one of his own kind during a late-night fly around the Thompson residence, the two become best friends and Tony joins Rudolph on his family's quest to retrieve a long lost magical amulet that can be used to turn vampires back into humans.

Without hesitation, Tony tightens the party store vampire cape around his neck and lets Rudolph expose him to the wonders of flying over rural Scotland and hanging out in overgrown cemeteries. Tony also does his part by leading Rudolph and his family to a barn full of cows to feed on, which, yes, results in a herd of vampire cows that can hang from the ceiling by their hooves. Tony finds all of this pretty flippin' cool, until Rookery, the vampire hunter, tries to trap him in a sarcophagus and stop the vampires from retrieving their amulet. From start to finish, this movie is a wild ride and made me laugh at surprising times, but it's definitely worth a watch. Just ask 2000 me, who dressed up like a vampire for Halloween three years in a row, or relive the movie vicariously through adult me by reading all the thoughts I had while rewatching it ahead.

Trader Joe's "Everything but the Leftovers" Seasoning Is Like Thanksgiving in a Spice Mix

Back away from your bagels, because Trader Joe's is introducing a new spice blend that you'll want to throw on, well, everything. The grocery chain just dropped an "Everything but the Leftovers" seasoning that's packed with the flavors of Thanksgiving. A quick look at the ingredients list shows a familiar mix of Turkey Day spices, like rosemary, thyme, sage, and parsley. I can imagine this blend sprinkled on a bowl of next-day mashed potatoes, no problem.

Trader Joe's is known for creating tasty and fun mixes, like the classic "Everything but the Bagel" seasoning and the more-recent "Everything but the Elote" seasoning - we expect this latest creation will be no different. If you're in the market for something new to spice up your life, consider grabbing a shaker or two the next time you're shopping around.

An Important Fashion Announcement - All Sherpas Are 50% Off at Old Navy!

I've never met a sherpa I didn't like. Whether it's a crewneck sweatshirt I plan to wear with joggers, a zip-front fleece to throw on with workout leggings, or a soft teddy coat that'll keep me warm on chilly days, I always feel snuggly and stylish when wearing the oh-so-soft fabric.

I'm all stocked up on sweatshirts for fall, but what I really need (and want!) are sherpa sweatshirts. And today is the best time for me to stock up because they're ALL 50 percent off Old Navy. Gift one, get one, or keep them all like I plan on doing.

Calling All Poor, Unfortunate Souls: Find Out What Disney Villain You Are Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Have you ever watched a Disney movie and, instead of identifying with a princess or sidekick, felt a teeny bit a sympathy for the villain in the story? (I mean, Maleficent was clearly misunderstood, and Captain Hook was tragically attacked by the supposed "hero" of the story, amirite?) If Disney villains make you feel more seen than anyone else, you're not alone. Some of us just hard darker souls than others, and a lot of that is reflected in our zodiac signs. For example, Gaston, despite his many, many flaws, was a confident guy who liked attention - sound familiar, Leo? While everybody on this list may be certifiably "bad," they all have highly relatable personality traits that make them seem even more human than most heroes. Find out which Disney villain you are by sliding to your zodiac sign, ahead!

ICYMI: The Boys Has Already Been Renewed For Season 3, So There's More Coming in 2021

Amazon Prime Video knows that we can't do without our boys. On July 23 (well ahead of the Sept. 4 release of The Boys' second installment), the streamer announced the season three renewal during the show's ComicCon@Home panel. Creator and showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that the show's writers are already working on season three virtually, saying, "The world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that's up to a microscopic virus."

No, we don't have a release date for season three yet, but to sweeten the pot, the streamer also revealed season two's after-show with host Aisha Tyler. Entitled Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys, the show dives deep into the stories behind the series and feature interviews with members of the cast, creative team, and other special guests.

"The Boys is one of the smartest, most irreverent, unapologetically badass shows streaming," Tyler said in a statement. "I became a fan during season one, and this season I'm stoked to be flying fans into the heart of the show as host of Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. Season two is bigger, badder, and more audacious than ever before, so join me after every episode as we dig through the rubble pile of our feelings. I promise, we'll get through it like The Boys - dysfunctional, but together."

Kripke will return as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for season three, alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as executive producers. Season three will feature eight episodes just like its predecessors, and hopefully, premiere by late 2021.

Yes, You Can Brush Your Teeth Too Much - Here's What You Need to Know

I was so ready to brag to my dentist about my new work-from-home perk: getting to brush my teeth right after every snack and meal - until I discovered it's not the best dental health habit.

That plot twist is courtesy of E. Lisa Reid, DMD, of Integrated Aesthetic Dentistry, who explained that people who brush too frequently often focus less on their brushing quality and technique - plus, they run the risk of increased gum recession.

If done frequently, brushing too soon after eating can be harmful as well. Eating can cause a decrease in your mouth's pH levels, which Reid said can be harmful to your enamel if you start abrasively brushing right away. The only time she recommends brushing right after eating is if you've had a sweet, sticky, or acidic treat - but that's not without rules.

"[Sweet] and sticky foods can collect on the teeth and serve as a substrate for the bacteria in the mouth to feed on and produce acids that break down the teeth," she explained.

With that said, Reid suggested rinsing your mouth with water and waiting for 30 minutes before brushing after eating or drinking to neutralize the pH levels in your mouth and remove debris - especially if you're one to worry about red-wine stains on your teeth.

"In the case of high-acidity substances that cause staining [such as wine, citrus, and beer], I would recommend brushing after neutralization occurs. Failure to do this could lead to enamel erosion."

There you have it - let the record show there is such a thing as too much brushing! Just don't run wild with that statement. It's still suggested you brush twice a day for two minutes at a time with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day.

What to Do If Your Cat Sucks on Blankets, According to Vets

From sitting in the bathtub to chewing on their owner's hair, cats exhibit many strange behaviors that often leave humans scratching their heads. But there's one behavior that absolutely melts even the toughest hearts - blanket sucking. Of course, pet owners that live with a blanket sucker may not find this all that cute. Although it's typically a harmless behavior, it's one that most cat owners find annoying, said Jessica Herman, DVM, adviser at Fuzzy Pet Health. But why do cats suck on blankets? POPSUGAR turned to the experts to discover the real meaning behind this feline behavior and ways to prevent (and distract) your sassy furball from blanket sucking.

Why Does My Cat Suck on Blankets?

There are a few reasons that cats suck on blankets. One likely reason is that they were weaned from their mother too early, said Mikel Delgado, PhD, a cat behavior researcher at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Kittens typically stay with their mother until they are fully weaned, which happens around 3 months old.

The breed of the cat may also affect your kitty's sucking habits, Delgado told POPSUGAR. This is because certain breeds, such as the Siamese, have a tendency to suck on blankets.

Cats may also suck on blankets and fabric in general because they're repeatedly rewarded for the behavior, said Matthew McCarthy, DVM, owner of Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Middle Village, NY. For example, "if your cat likes to snuggle with you and nibbles on your sweater or a nearby blanket a little while doing so, it's kinda nice and you may reciprocate with some soft talk and rubs," he said. A learned behavior such as this typically develops at a young age and often continues through a cat's life with no problem.

Another reason cats may develop a blanket-sucking habit is because they have a medical condition, Dr. McCarthy said. Adult cats that suddenly develop blanket sucking with no apparent underlying trigger may have an underlying medical disorder. Such health problems are not always obvious and will require lab work, radiographs, and advanced diagnostics to reach a diagnosis, he said. Because of this, if such a behavior develops in your adult cat, you should consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.

The final reason has to do with stress or anxiety, Dr. McCarthy said. Indoor cats often do not have enough activities to keep them active and stimulated. As a result, some cats may choose to engage in blanket sucking as a way of easing their stress and anxiety, he said.

Should I Be Concerned About Blanket Sucking?

Most kittens outgrow this behavior around 10 to 12 months of age, as it's when they reach social maturity, Dr. Herman said. That said, some cats may continue to exhibit this behavior with reduced intensity and frequency later on in life. You should consult your veterinarian if the behavior becomes excessive or destructive, she said.

This is because in some cases the behavior may intensify, affecting your cat's normal daily activities like playing and eating, Dr. McCarthy said. In other instances, the behavior may transition from sucking on fabric to ingesting the fabric, which can lead to a life-threatening gastric or intestinal blockage.

How Can I Stop My Cat From Sucking on Blankets?

You should first notify your veterinarian about the behavior to confirm that there is no medical cause behind it, Delgado said.

If no medical disorder is found, Dr. Herman suggests limiting your cat's access to the fabrics they like to suck on to stop blanket sucking. For example, "If your cat has a favorite blanket he or she sucks on, rid of the blanket," she said. "If your cat only sucks on blankets on your bed, do not allow your cat access to your bedroom." You should also never pet or engage with your cat when he or she is exhibiting the sucking behavior, since this may encourage the behavior. The key to eliminating blanket sucking is not encouraging or reinforcing the behavior, Dr. Herman said. She further stressed the importance of never punishing your cat for the sucking behavior because it can cause additional behavior problems.

Sometimes the behavior can be redirected by you providing your cat with other oral enrichment outlets too, Delgado said, referencing cat chew toys, cat grass, and food puzzles as healthy alternatives. Lastly, you should make sure that your cat's environmental needs are met. Setting up the right environment for your kitty includes having several cozy spaces to rest, vertical space to climb, toys and playtime, scratching posts, clean litter boxes, and plenty of gentle attention from their humans, Delgado said.

The True Story of The Right Stuff Is Even More Remarkable, If That's Possible
