Lady Gaga's New Song Might be a Little Cheesy, but It's Her Most Important One Yet
Lady Gaga is one of the many celebrities dedicating their platforms to imploring fans to vote in the upcoming election. In her latest Instagram post on Oct. 15, the "Rain On Me" singer did what she does best and adorably performed a slightly corny yet very important song about voting. Gaga's latest tune provides a crucial reminder to register to vote for those who have yet to do so and encourages fans to visit TurboVote.org if they need additional help with voter registration or voting by mail.
"They'll help you register / Inform you how to vote / Help tell you where to go / I know some of you still don't know," she hilariously sang. As she said herself, the catchy tune is admittedly a little cheesy, but certainly vocalizes a major message. With less than a month left until Election Day, voter registration deadlines are approaching in many states (and it's already passed in others), so if you have yet to register, allow Gaga's words to urge you to do so ASAP.
If you're all set to vote and planning on heading to the polls, the single also reminds you to know exactly where you need to go and what to bring. Particularly, if you're a first-time voter or voting in a new state, the process can be confusing, so it's always a good idea to be prepared. Take Gaga's advice and make sure to cast your vote: "Don't give up . . . it's important your voice is heard!" Listen to the full song above.
Behind the Meteoric Rise of Dr. Woo, Hollywood's Most Coveted Tattoo Artist
Brian "Dr. Woo" was 14 years old when he got his first formal tattoo - a dragon on his left ankle, if you omit the impromptu stick-and-poke smiley face him and his friends DIYed at age 11 - but it was a decade before he even considered going into that line of work. It wasn't for a lack of interest, or even curiosity, as much as it was a preconceived notion of its plausibility.
"I was a tattoo collector from a very young age, but the deeper I got into that world, the further away being a tattoo artist seemed," he told POPSUGAR. "Being at the shop regularly, I got to see the pedigree some of these guys had reached. It's such a subversive culture, and I was intimidated. I was just some first-generation kid trying to find my own way."
Today, Dr. Woo is one of the most sought-after tattooists, with the biggest names in Hollywood (think: Hailey Bieber, Drake, and Kendall Jenner, to name a few) all clamoring for a coveted appointment. But at the time, he was working as a buyer for a high-end fashion boutique. Then came his first big break: legendary tattooist Mark Mahoney, of which Dr. Woo had gotten many a body art from, offered him a rare apprenticeship at his parlor - one of the most esteemed in LA at the time.
"I was put up against people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but it was a harsh measuring system."
"It was three years of watching 10 tattooers at the top of their game, and it was great, but I was at the bottom of the totem pole. I did everything from sweeping to cleaning the toilets to ordering their food to bandaging their clients. Any problems that trickled down, I was at the bottom catching all of it."
That, he says, was the true test: "I was put up against so many people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but at the same time, it was a harsh measuring system. You rate yourself against these titans. I was insecure about my own abilities, and there wasn't a lot of encouragement. But then I figured, like everything else, I'm just going to do what I can to the best of my capabilities, and have faith that if I attack a job without slacking, it'll pay off for me."

The fourth season of The Crown is just around the corner, so it's a perfect time to revisit where all the main characters end up at the end of last season. Season three sees some major changes for the royal family - and not just because it was the first season with a cast change. It's the younger generation's turn to struggle with the conflict between duty and their true selves, while the older generation continues to try to keep things together, no matter what the personal cost.
Season four is sure to get even more dramatic, with the introduction of Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher. Ahead of the new season's debut on Netflix on Nov. 15, check in with all of the current main characters and revisit where we last saw each of them.
What Is Human Design, and How Can It Help You Find Your Purpose? Here's Everything to Know
People want to have as much insight into their actions, personalities, and futures as possible, as evidenced by the abundance of self-help tips, personality tests, and astrology-based content and apps there are out there. And I think this is for good reason. Even 50 years ago, there weren't many options for "finding your purpose" or "chasing your dreams." Roles were more or less laid out for you, and there wasn't much space to explore your options or ask what it was you even wanted to do with your life.
Fast forward to today. We have automated jobs, the internet, feminism, and more. Our lives look a lot different than the "go to school, get a job because it pays the bills, get married, retire, die" narrative many found themselves trapped in. We actually get to ask questions around whether we even want to get married or not, what it is we love to do, what our gifts are, and how we can turn those passions into a career and life we actually love and thrive in. Despite the natural consequences of a sped-up world, this is truly an exciting time to be alive as we continue to learn what it means to evolve in consciousness together.
For those who haven't figured out just what it is they want to do with their lives, or even with their next week, having a tool or system that gives you insight into what that path might look like for you can be incredibly helpful. Enter: Human Design. Since Human Design is a little newer on the scene, for those who aren't familiar, here's a breakdown on what it is and how it can help provide more clarity into who you are and what you're here for.
What Is Human Design?
Human Design is the study of our energetic auras - a guide for how we're meant to most powerfully utilize our energy in the world and how we're wired to make decisions, as well as a blueprint highlighting our inherent gifts. It combines wisdom from astrology, Kabbalah, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, the I Ching, and quantum physics. Human Design is also known as the Science of Differentiation - highlighting the uniqueness and individuality of each person while also stressing the importance that when we all live into our unique designs, we thrive together collectively.
Human Design was initially created as a system for parents to be able to lean on when raising their children - allowing them to honor the originality of each child, and help encourage them in their energetic gifts.
How Can I Find Out What My Human Design Is?
You'll need your exact birth time (down to the minute, and yes, it matters!), as well as your birth location, and then you can plug it into Jovian Archive's chart finder or My Body Graph's to get your (free) personalized chart.
What Makes Human Design Different From Astrology or Personality Tests?
Human Design is able to tell you your unique energetic blueprint and insights into how you best engage with opportunities and other people all from the time of your birth. Personality tests require questionnaires which can sometimes be distorted by our conditioning or biases, and astrology provides more cyclical wisdom depending on the location of the planets and celestial beings at any given point in the year as it relates to you and your birth time.
All systems have the potential to be incredibly helpful depending on what it is you're looking for, and what resonates with you the most. Human Design is different in the way it provides validation to the things you already know to be true about yourself deep down, and gives you a road map for de-conditioning from the world's messaging so you can have permission to step more fully into the true self you came here to be.
How Will Knowing My Human Design Benefit My Life?
Knowing your Type in Human Design will help tell you if you're someone who is here to create more energy for yourself and others by learning how to follow after the things that light you up, or to be someone who is meant to tweak and improve the energy that's already here with your innate wisdom and openness. It will show you how to best look out for opportunities that come your way, and whether you're here to initiate them (Manifestors), respond to those in your path (Generators and Manifesting Generators), wait for others to invite your wisdom in (Projectors), or wait for your lunar cycle to play out before offering your unique reflective wisdom back to those around you (Reflectors). Human Design explains how you're wired to make decisions and how to tap into the wisdom of your body to make them depending on your Authority. It gives you a framework for how you best learn and share these learnings with others through your Profile, and when you dive deep into the Gates and Channels in your chart, you can learn about your unique strengths and how these can come together to illuminate your purpose and what you're here to offer back to the world.
What Type of People Would Benefit Most From Learning Their Human Design?
Human Design seems to resonate most with people who are realizing they want more out of their life and who are ready to step out of the status quo that perhaps someone else laid out for them. It's for people who find themselves feeling tired or rundown and can't figure out how to create more energy and joy in their daily life. It's incredibly helpful for anyone wanting more insight into how they're wired to work and seek out opportunities, wanting more clarity on how to take next steps in their life, or just needs some affirmation into the amazing gift they're here to be! And lastly, it's an incredibly beautiful tool for parents who are wanting a better understanding of their child's unique make-up and how they can best honor it while raising them.
How Can I Learn More and Dive Deeper Into My Design?
For starters, just knowing your Type and Authority will provide you with so much value, and while it's newer, there is lots of free knowledge out there on Human Design. To read more about each Type and their Strategy, along with the different Authorities, you can find the high level of those here. If you want to dive deeper into your individual design, you can find any Human Design expert who offers readings or a detailed description of your chart and order those from them. I offer 20+ page Design Guides that will give you a thorough and holistic view of your design, as well as readings to go over it in real time together. I also share plenty of free Human Design content over on Hi Def's Instagram and blog for anyone wanting to dip their toes in and learn more that way.
It's easy to feel a little inundated by all the different personal growth tools and systems there are out there. But all that matters is finding what speaks to you and what helps encourage you into the best version of the person you already are, because you deserve to have the most incredible experience of this life possible.

We Think We Know Who the Serpent Is on The Masked Singer, and They're Going All the Way
The Masked Singer season four is just getting started, but the Serpent is already one of the frontrunners. During episode two, the Serpent left the judges and fans speechless after performing "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers. Though their wacky costume was certainly off-putting at first (the moving tails behind them are creepy to say the least), the minute they opened their mouth to sing, we were instantly charmed. Plus, there's just something about that voice that is so recognizable. While the clue video didn't give us much to go off of, that didn't start people from throwing out their theories. So far, the most popular among those is Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr., but there are a few other convincing ones floating around. Read our personal thoughts on who is behind the talented snake ahead.
Blackpink's Origin Story Started Long Before the Group's Public Debut in 2016
It's hard to believe that the K-pop girl group Blackpink has only been around for a few years, but Blackpink actually started much earlier than its public debut. Netflix's new documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky follows the mega-popular group from the earliest beginnings up to their superstardom, revealing how the band came to be and how long it took for them to come together.
Blackpink's story started back in 2010, when the individual members of the group auditioned for YG Entertainment, according to a 2019 Billboard profile. YG is a major firm in the K-pop industry, which recruits young musicians to become "trainees" in a highly structured system that eventually turns them into "idols," or highly produced pop stars with a particular image curated by the entertainment company. The members of Blackpink all auditioned individually and eventually made it through several rounds to join YG.
Their next step was going through a rigorous academy, which involved intense schedules and daily training in music, dance, and more, in order to determine which trainees would be selected to become full-fledged music acts as organized by the company. They all trained for several years between their initial recruitment and Blackpink's eventual debut in 2016. It was during this phase of isolated, intense training that the four future bandmates met and bonded. "Jennie would speak English to me, and Jisoo helped me out with my Korean," Lisa, who is from Thailand, told Billboard, while Rosé recalled a late-night jam session where "we just clicked."
It wasn't until 2016, after years of rumors, that YG finally announced the formation of Blackpink and began revealing its members to the public. On June 29 of that year, Korean entertainment websites such as Naver formally broke the news that Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa would be the complete band, while also officially debuting the "Blackpink" name. Only a few months later, their first single album, Square One, was released with the songs "Whistle" and "Boombayah." Since then, their careers have taken off massively, becoming an international hit and one of the most popular music acts in the world. It's no wonder, then, that Netflix chose them as the subject of their first K-pop program.
You can find out more about the personal stories behind each of the four women's journeys in Blackpink: Light Up the Sky, now streaming on Netflix!
Can We Just Turn Brandy's BBMAs Performance Into a Whole Concert?
The Billboard Music Awards went down in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and it was a big night for Brandy! The 41-year-old '90s icon performed for the first time ever at the ceremony, and we're just wondering what took so long? Brandy treated us to a soulful performance of her hits "Borderline" and "Almost Doesn't Count," as well as "No Tomorrow" featuring Ty Dolla $ign. The entire thing was so soothing and nostalgic, we didn't want it to end.
Brandy's Billboard debut comes three months after the release of her seventh studio album, B7. She cowrote and coproduced the project, which was a first for her. While speaking with Billboard magazine recently, Brandy explained that it was "really important for me to just discover that part of myself." She added, "I was working with some amazing people like DJ Camper and LaShawn Daniels, who helped guide me, and it was a way for me to really use music to heal and be therapeutic. It felt different than anything that I had ever done, and it's something that I felt like I needed to do." Watch Brandy's performance above.
Will the Seahorse Win the Golden Mask on The Masked Singer? Here's Who We Think It May Be
Season four of The Masked Singer is well underway, and one of the standout performers is the Seahorse. The Seahorse made its debut during episode two of the show, and completely blew the judges away with its performance of "Only Girl (in the World)" by Rihanna. Their followup performance was just as incredible as they sang "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion during episode four. And yes, they hit those high notes. Naturally, there are already a ton of theories floating around about who could possibly be behind the aquatic getup. From Halsey to Halle Bailey to Tori Kelly, keep reading to see who we think is behind the mask.
The Masked Singer: Breaking Down All Our Theories About Who Are Behind the Masks
The Masked Singer season four kicked off on Sept. 23, and the competition is super fierce this year. Not only does this season have truly wacky costumes, but there are a handful of really talented singers. Seriously, they have really outdone themselves this year. Of course, the best part of the show is trying to guess which celebrities are behind the masks. While the judges always have some smart guesses, we also have a few theories of our own. So far, we've been introduced to Group A and Group B, which include the first musical duo and a costume with a puppet. Ahead, keep reading for a breakdown of our thoughts, as well as who has been unmasked so far.
The Haunting of Bly Manor: The Tragic Twist in Hannah Grose's Story
Hannah Grose, the strong yet kind housekeeper at Bly Manor, quickly endears herself to Dani when she shows up to be the au pair. But even from the beginning, as lovely as she seems, there is something off about this Haunting of Bly Manor character. In a show with so many twists and turns, heavy emphasis on the twists, you couldn't help but assume that maybe Hannah wasn't who you thought.
Dani first meets Hannah when Flora Wingrave brings her to the well on the manor's grounds. Dani and Flora find Hannah there with Flora's brother Miles. Hannah is distracted, staring into the well, before she introduces herself to Dani. From there, Hannah's seemingly normal, but we soon learn about the ghosts at the manor and how they're tucking the children away to take over their bodies and how several characters are not actually themselves.
Former manor employees Peter Quint and Rebecca Jessel both die on the manor grounds, so they're trapped. Though they can't leave, they can take over the bodies of the living, which Peter does with Miles frequently. As the story jumps around - showing the children being tucked away into memories while the ghosts take over - Hannah keeps flashing back to her memories too. She finds herself interviewing Owen (Rahul Kohli) for his job as the cook over and over, unable to confront her most horrible memory.
The day Dani arrives at the manor, Peter inhabits Miles, snaps at Hannah, and pushes her to her death in the well. It's Hannah's ghost staring into the well at her lifeless body, and it's her ghost that carries on in the manor as if nothing had happened. A few clues point to her being off, though, like how she never leaves the manor grounds - which ghosts are unable to do. That means she doesn't even go to Owen's mom's funeral, despite how close she and Owen are. She also keeps seeing cracks in the walls, which we later find out was the last thing she saw when she fell down the well: a crack in the well wall.
Hannah's soul is set free in the end when Dani offers herself to the Lady in the Lake who cursed the ghosts to stay, finding rest after her body is lifted from the well and buried.
Alicia Keys on Breonna Taylor and Eradicating Police Brutality: "We Do Wield the Power"
Alicia Keys has been outspoken about the effects of police brutality on the Black community, and in a recent interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, she encouraged her fans to take action. "It's devastating, obviously," Keys said in regard to the Breonna Taylor case, for which no officers were charged with Taylor's killing. "I mean, we all can see [police brutality], no matter where we live, no matter how we grew up . . . You know, this is not the way it's supposed to be and we will not accept it anymore . . . I'll be honest. I'm disappointed. I'm very disappointed; I'm frustrated; I think we all are. It's just enough with the actions that are never held accountable. It's just enough, you know?"
"I do feel inspired to continue going, but I do feel disappointed that more justice wasn't [done] for Breonna and for all of the people who have lost their lives."
When asked about the meaning behind her new song, "Perfect Way to Die," which is inspired by those who died at the hands of police officers, Keys said, "There is no perfect way to die, and definitely not at the hands of police brutality." She went on to add that putting conversations about police brutality at the forefront is a crucial step in making the necessary shifts and changes toward racial justice. "How do we want to show up for ourselves? For our communities? What do we want to demand from our country?" she said.
Keys added that it's inspiring to see people all across the world using their voices to speak up and speak loudly about the devastating effects of police brutality, and it's important to remember that we have the power to incite change. "We think this unseen government kind of does everything and we have no control over it," Keys said. "Sometimes it can feel like that, but we do have the power; we do wield the power. So I do feel inspired to continue going, but I do feel disappointed that more justice wasn't [done] for Breonna and for all of the people who have lost their lives."

Take the Fall Spice Up a Notch With This Pumpkin Spice S'more Cocktail
@join_jules Day 7: Pumpkin Spiced S’more #FallAesthetic #StrapBack #fyp #foryou #drink #halloween #spooky #halloweenathome #october #cocktail
♬ original sound - Shalfi
As often as I bring home Starbucks' pumpkin spice coffees from Starbucks, my boyfriend brings home six-packs of Samuel Adams' Oktoberfest beer. It's just part of the fall season. But as much as I love pumpkin spice everything, the flavor is fairly limiting when it comes to drinks. There's only so many variations of pumpkin spice coffees you can drink before they start to lose their charm, and if you're not a beer drinker, Oktoberfest-style lagers are out of the question, too. Thankfully, this spiked pumpkin spice drink from Join Jules (@Join_Jules) on TikTok has us covered. It's a Pumpkin Spice S'more Cocktail, to be specific, and it's basically everything we love about pumpkin spice and more.
The base of this cocktail consists of peanut butter whiskey and coffee liqueur, more commonly known as Screwball and Kahlúa, respectively. If you have a peanut allergy, salted caramel whiskey is a great alternative to Screwball. Start by rimming a six- to eight-ounce glass with chocolate syrup and graham cracker crumbs, the same way you'd rim a margarita glass with lime juice and salt, then drizzle extra chocolate syrup along the inside walls. Fill the glass three fourths of the way full with Screwball and a generous splash of Kahlúa. Top with pumpkin cream cold foam, and gently stir. To make pumpkin cream cold foam in a pinch, simply combine heavy whipping cream with pumpkin puree and as much pumpkin spice as your heart desires. Blend until light and fluffy, and you're good to go.)
For the s'mores element of this drink, skewer together two jumbo marshmallows, and toast them on the stove or with a culinary torch if you have one. To finish off your Pumpkin Spice S'more Cocktail, place the skewered marshmallows over the pumpkin cream, and it's ready to enjoy. Whether or not you enjoy it in addition to, or instead of, your regular coffee is up to you, but one thing's for sure, this bold coffee cocktail brings a whole new meaning to the "spice" of pumpkin spice season.

Doctors Explain Why You Feel So Thirsty Just Before Bed
It's finally time to hit the sheets - except now you're suddenly in the mood to chug a few bottles of water. What gives? If you can't stop refilling the glass on your bedside table, you're not alone: it's common to feel thirsty just before falling asleep. According to doctors, there are a few reasons why you're pouring another glass when all you want is some shut-eye.
Our biological clock may be one of the biggest culprits of our late-night thirst. We all have a circadian rhythm that fine-tunes the production of hormones related to the position of the sun, explained Nikola Djordjevic, MD, a general practitioner and medical adviser at Whatasleep. "In the evening, we produce melatonin, which not only makes our mind sleepy, but also triggers the sleeping state of cells in which they repair and regenerate," Dr. Djordjevic told POPSUGAR. "Our body knows that hours without hydration are ahead, and it recharges our fluid supply, hence, the increased thirst at night."
But as much as biology is to blame for feeling dehydrated after hours, our lifestyle choices play a role as well. The big meals we eat for dinner, like the frozen pizzas heated up an hour before bed, tend to be packed with salt. "We actually have a 'thirst center' in our brains that makes us feel thirsty when our serum sodium level increases, such as when consuming salty food," said Jesse P. Houghton, MD, FACG, senior medical director of gastroenterology at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
The truth is, many of us aren't staying adequately hydrated throughout the day, which inevitably catches up to us in the evening. And no, coffee and cocktails won't cut it. "It's good practice to drink water throughout the day, as doing so provides a wide range of benefits, such as proper detoxification, better energy and digestion, and even improved brain function," Joel Kahn, MD, FACC, a clinical professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and scientific adviser for RDCL Superfoods, told POPSUGAR. "The fact is that every cell in the human body needs water to function optimally." We'll drink (a tall glass of seltzer) to that!
Meghan Markle Sheds Light on the Harmful Effects of Social Media: "It's an Addiction"
Meghan Markle has been very outspoken about the dangers of social media and how harmful online trolling can be. During another conversation with Fortune for its Most Powerful Next Gen Summit on Tuesday, the Duchess of Sussex doubled down on her message and revealed that she hasn't been on social media for "a very long time" for her "own self-preservation."
"I've made a personal choice to not have any account, so I don't know what's out there, and in many ways that's helpful for me," she explained. "I have a lot of concerns for people that have become obsessed with it. And it is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it's an addiction like many others."
"You have the power to turn this around."
As for how to engage on social media in a healthy way, Meghan said it's important to be "conscious" and "responsible." She added, "Understand that it is not limited to that one moment, that you are creating an echo chamber for yourself. The more that you engage with things that are negative – not just for other people that you might not know but what it's doing to you as a human being - will really have lasting effects . . . you have the power to turn this around."
Meghan also shut down those rumors that she used to run her and Prince Harry's official Sussex Royal account, saying there was a "whole team" behind it. Watch Meghan's interview in the clip above.
Yep, Apple Is Releasing a New iPhone 12, but Don't Throw Out Your Power Adapter Just Yet
Hold onto your AirPods, because Apple is releasing a new iPhone 12 in four different styles, and it's missing a few of our favorite accessories. The lineup includes an iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max; all models will boast 5G and new features that make each phone more durable, more powerful, and more environmentally friendly.
Each model includes a new Ceramic Shield front cover, which is tougher than any smartphone glass and protects your screen from cracking or getting damaged. And, as someone who's dropped their phone on the floor too many times to count, I'm highly intrigued. For iPhone Pro and Pro Max users, the phones will also come in four stainless steel finishes, including graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.
So What Are These New Features, Exactly?
All four phones will also be compatible with MagSafe magnetic chargers and will be programmed with A14 Bionic, a smartphone chip that increases the phone's speed and performance by up to 50 percent, allowing for higher-quality photography, console-quality gaming, and a longer battery life. After adding on so many cool new features, it's no surprise Apple is also taking away a few of our favorite accessories with the new release. As part of its mission to reduce carbon emissions and achieve a net zero climate impact by 2030, the company is removing the power adapter (or block charger) and EarPods from iPhone packaging. So, if you don't happen to have a pair of earphones or an adapter on hand, you'll have to buy them separately.
But what's the real catch? The starting price for the iPhone 12 Mini is $699, followed by the iPhone 12 at $799, the iPhone 12 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1,099. So, unless you've been saving up, testing out the new iPhone 12 for yourself could put a considerable dent in your bank account. Personally, the superdurable screen cover still has me kind of tempted to trade in my old iPhone X. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will be available for preorder beginning Friday, Oct. 16, and available for purchase on Friday, Oct. 23, while the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max will be available for preorder beginning Friday, Nov. 6, and available for purchase on Nov. 13.
Before you decide on a phone for yourself, take a sneak peek at each model in the iPhone 12 lineup and find out more about their new features.

Ted Cruz's Comments on Birth Control Are Factually Incorrect - Here's Why That's a Problem
In the midst of Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearings on Oct. 13, Senator Ted Cruz misdefined birth control in a misleading and problematic way. Namely, he referred to birth control as "anti-abortion drugs."
To catch you up, Cruz brought up birth control when discussing implied threats to religious freedom. He specifically referenced the Supreme Court case of The Little Sisters of the Poor Saints Peter and Paul Home v. Pennsylvania. In this case, the Little Sisters of the Poor asked for exemption from the part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires health plans to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods. Key word: contraceptive. (The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that organizations could opt out of this requirement for religious and moral reasons.)
In the hearing, Cruz said, "The Little Sisters of the Poor, our Catholic Convent of nuns, who take oaths of poverty, who devote their lives to caring for the sick, caring for the needy, caring for the elderly, and the Obama administration litigated against the Little Sisters of the Poor, seeking to fine them in order to force them to pay for abortion-inducing drugs among others."
Buried in the rhetoric is a glaring error. Cruz is saying that contraceptives are "abortion-inducing drugs," which is medically inaccurate. Here's why.
Why Contraceptives Don't Cause Abortions
Pregnancy officially begins when a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterine lining. According to the New York Times, anti-abortion groups use the phrase "abortion-inducing" to describe methods that they say can prevent this implantation from happening.
As the NYT explains, this assumption is already incorrect; if pregnancy does not begin until implantation, a contraceptive that prevents implantation can't be called abortion-inducing, because there is not yet a pregnancy to terminate. (Implantation, not fertilization, is considered the beginning of pregnancy because many fertilized eggs naturally fail to implant in the uterus.) Regardless, nearly all forms of birth control do not prevent pregnancy in this way. Rather, they prevent eggs from being fertilized at all, one step before implantation would even occur. Here's how several of the most popular forms of birth control work.
- Combination birth control pills: Combination birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin. Taking the pills every day prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation, as well as altering the cervical mucus and uterine lining to keep sperm from reaching the egg.
- Progestin-only birth control pills: Unlike combination birth control pills, progestin-only pills do not contain estrogen. These pills do not also suppress ovulation as consistently as combination pills. They prevent pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining, stopping sperm from reaching the egg.
- Hormonal IUD: An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small plastic device inserted into the uterine. A hormonal IUD releases progestin, which prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and preventing ovulation.
- Copper IUD: A copper IUD, which does not use hormones, may be able to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. However, it is also effective at preventing fertilization, because the copper changes the way sperm cells move, making it so they can't swim to an egg.
- Emergency contraceptive pills: Emergency contraceptives are taken in the days immediately following unprotected sex. They prevent pregnancy by delaying ovulation, or the release of an egg from your ovary.
Birth control by definition does not end a pregnancy; it prevents it from happening in the first place. As reproductive health continues to be a political talking point, it's crucial to hold politicians accountable on these key points, which have a direct effect on our bodies and lives.
