You’ve Probably Been Using Way Too Much Toothpaste This Whole Time

Are you using the right amount of toothpaste? #dentist #dental #dentistry #tiktokguru #youngcreators #learnontiktok #edutok #teeth #foryou

♬ Mad at Disney - salem ilese

Brushing your teeth may be a basic part of your everyday routine, but, as it turns out, there are a lot of different ways you could be doing it wrong.

TikTok's latest viral sensation, Dr. Gao Jye Teh, a Malaysian dentist, is here to fix that. He recently racked up 7.5 million views on a video demonstrating how much toothpaste you should actually be using each time you brush. Spoiler alert: it's way less than you'd expect.

First, he squeezes a generous swipe onto his lime green toothbrush, illustrating the typical visual in toothpaste commercials. The text reads, "The amount of toothpaste used in commercials is WAY TOO MUCH." Swiveling around in his chair, he then shows that a light smear is all you need for babies and toddlers under the age of three. However, even for adults, the correct amount is not much more than that. According to Dr. Gao, for anyone above the age of 3, a pea-size squirt of toothpaste is all you need.

While this news might come as a surprise to some, you may want to consider the advice in the video. Dr. David C. Gordon, DDS, of Gordon Center For General and Advanced Dentistry in Gaithersburg, MD, warns that there are more risks to using too much toothpaste than too little. "If too much toothpaste is being ingested vs. being spit out, it can be bad for your health," he says.

The fluoride in toothpaste helps protect teeth by remineralizing enamel and preventing decay. However, Gordon says that too much fluoride in the body, which could be caused by accidentally swallowing toothpaste, can lead to kidney and gastrointestinal issues. Children under the age of 3 "aren't considered reliable spitters after they brush their teeth and could get too much systemic fluoride," which is why Dr. Gordon recommends a smear no larger than a grain of rice.

Plus, using too much toothpaste can actually lead to a less-thorough clean. "Too much toothpaste can also cause your mouth to feel clean before it really is, causing you to not brush everywhere," Gordon explains. With too little toothpaste, your main risks are weaker enamel and smelly breath.

Stick to the pea-size method, and you should be in the clear.

27 Gifts That Will Help Your Stressed Friend Chill All the Way Out

We all have that one stress ball of a human being who we call a friend (and maybe you're that person). They're always worrying about something, and sometimes you just wish you could tell them to take a deep breath and chill the f*ck out. While that may be a bit harsh, a subtler way to do this is by gifting them with things that will help them calm down long enough to realize that most of the time, they're going to get through it. Here are 27 gifts for your stressed-out friends that you could maybe use after a long day, too.

What's at the top of our list? Well, we found crystal beauty tools, wellness planners, and even silk eye masks. There's also an essential oil diffuser for the car (we know), and a CBD bath soak. Doesn't that sound ideal? If you end up keeping a few of these gifts for yourself, we won't say a thing.

A Guide to Each Member of the Chicago 7 and What Happened to Them

Aaron Sorkin returns to the political drama sphere with The Trial of the Chicago 7, which is based on the infamous court case involving protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It was a tense time in America as citizens were unhappy with poverty, racial inequality, and the Vietnam War. Police brutality notoriously broke out at the demonstrations. Ultimately, eight organizers were arrested on charges of conspiracy to use interstate commerce with intent to incite a riot: Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Lee Weiner, and Bobby Seale.

The presiding judge on the case was Judge Julius Hoffman. During the trial, the eight men and their lawyer ignored decorum and provoked the judge, hoping to reveal what they saw as the corrupt values of the establishment. Judge Hoffman demanded order using troubling measures, even gagging and tying Seale, who would be severed from the case. Only two men were completely acquitted of all charges by the jury: Froines and Weiner. All were charged with contempt of court, though never sentenced. Their convictions would eventually be overturned by an appeals court soon after.

So, who were the members of the Chicago Seven - really, the Chicago Eight? Here's a breakdown of what role each person played as well as their whereabouts after the trial.

You Can Still Get HPV Even if You've Had the Vaccine, but You Should Get the Shot Anyway

When you go to get vaccinated, odds are you're enduring the quick sting of the needle in order to protect yourself from something much worse. Once you're done, that vaccine-preventable disease is just one less thing you have to worry about - or at least that's true in most cases. When it comes to human papillomavirus (HPV), it's a bit more complicated.

There are a few different types of HPV vaccines out there, but the most common one in the US is Gardasil. This vaccine is often given in doses to young adolescents around the age of 11 or 12 (before they're sexually active), and it's intended to protect against genital warts and cervical cancer, which can be caused by certain strains of HPV. But while Gardasil is highly effective at protecting against these dangerous strains, there are several others that can cause troubling symptoms, even in those who have been vaccinated. Knowing how to recognize these strains of HPV and protect yourself against them is extremely important for your sexual health. That's why we spoke to ob-gyns to unpack everything you need to know about the HPV vaccine and what it can (and can't) do.

Which Strains of HPV Does the Vaccine Cover?

According to Kim Langdon, MD, an ob-gyn with Medzino, there are about 100 known types of HPV in the world today, all of which are classified by number. "The most common genital ones are 6, 11, 16, and 18, and 6 and 11 can result in genital warts and laryngeal papillomas," or abnormal growths on the vocal cords, Dr. Langdon told POPSUGAR. Two of these strains - 16 and 18 - are also associated with cervical cancer.

Wendy Askew, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn in San Antonio, TX, explained that the Gardasil vaccine protects against nine of these strains, including 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. These are the most clinically relevant to cervical cancer and genital warts, and studies of the vaccine show that it's extremely effective at preventing infections stemming from these strains.

That said, you can still contract HPV even if you've been vaccinated, because there are least 91 other strains that aren't covered by the shot.

How Can I Spot the Symptoms of HPV?

The symptoms depend on the specific strain of HPV. If you contract one of the cervical cancer-causing strains of HPV, "you don't usually get any symptoms until [the cancer is] really advanced," Dr. Askew told POPSUGAR. "You can have bleeding after intercourse, but there's not a lot of differences."

With other types of HPV, common symptoms may include bumps or lesions developing on the skin around the vagina or anus. "How big they get and how many someone develops are more dependent on their immune system and how aggressive the strain of virus they got is," Dr. Askew explained. While these are the things you're most likely to notice, you may not have any symptoms at all - this is why it's so important to keep up with routine Pap smears and regular STD testing.

What Can I Do to Protect Myself Against HPV?

While the possibility of becoming infected is scary, there are plenty of things you can do to reduce your chances of getting HPV. Though it can't prevent all HPV infections, the vaccine is an important first step. Gardasil will ultimately protect you from many of the most aggressive and harmful strains of HPV - but in order to get the best protection possible, you should get all three doses of the vaccine. "Even if [people] get one vaccine and don't get the other two, they still have some protection, but you get better protection if you complete the full vaccine series," Dr. Askew said.

Beyond getting vaccinated, it's important to practice safe sex (condoms can help reduce your risk, Dr. Langdon noted), and keep an open line of communication with your partner about any exposure they've had. Make sure you're getting tested for sexually transmitted infections, too.

Ballet is gorgeous enough when it's performed on stage, but when dancers take their moves to the gorgeous backdrop of New York City, prepare to be truly mesmerized. Case in point (or should we say "on pointe"): the Dance Theatre of Harlem's breathtaking "Dancing Through Harlem" video, which features dancers leaping and pirouetting through the empty city streets.

Released in August, the video follows the troupe of dancers through Harlem, from a subway station to a riverside path, as they float through a routine that seems to defy gravity. Dance Theatre of Harlem says it uses "the language of ballet to celebrate African American culture," and the result in this short video is graceful, calming, and hypnotizing all at once.

Check it out for yourself, and if you want more ballet, take a look at this gorgeous "Swans For Relief" routine featuring Misty Copeland that helped to raise money for struggling dance companies.

Behind the Meteoric Rise of Dr. Woo, Hollywood's Most Coveted Tattoo Artist

Brian "Dr. Woo" was 14 years old when he got his first formal tattoo - a dragon on his left ankle, if you omit the impromptu stick-and-poke smiley face him and his friends DIYed at age 11 - but it was a decade before he even considered going into that line of work. It wasn't for a lack of interest, or even curiosity, as much as it was a preconceived notion of its plausibility.

"I was a tattoo collector from a very young age, but the deeper I got into that world, the further away being a tattoo artist seemed," he told POPSUGAR. "Being at the shop regularly, I got to see the pedigree some of these guys had reached. It's such a subversive culture, and I was intimidated. I was just some first-generation kid trying to find my own way."

Today, Dr. Woo is one of the most sought-after tattooists, with the biggest names in Hollywood (think: Hailey Bieber, Drake, and Kendall Jenner, to name a few) all clamoring for a coveted appointment. But at the time, he was working as a buyer for a high-end fashion boutique. Then came his first big break: legendary tattooist Mark Mahoney, of which Dr. Woo had gotten many a body art from, offered him a rare apprenticeship at his parlor - one of the most esteemed in LA at the time.

"I was put up against people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but it was a harsh measuring system."

"It was three years of watching 10 tattooers at the top of their game, and it was great, but I was at the bottom of the totem pole. I did everything from sweeping to cleaning the toilets to ordering their food to bandaging their clients. Any problems that trickled down, I was at the bottom catching all of it."

That, he says, was the true test: "I was put up against so many people telling me I wasn't going to make it, and everyone around me were the best in the business. It was good because it gave me something to look up to, but at the same time, it was a harsh measuring system. You rate yourself against these titans. I was insecure about my own abilities, and there wasn't a lot of encouragement. But then I figured, like everything else, I'm just going to do what I can to the best of my capabilities, and have faith that if I attack a job without slacking, it'll pay off for me."

Pre-Date Meditation Might Be the Secret Boost Your Love Life is Missing

Everyone gets nervous before a first date, between the pressure of meeting someone new, the back-and-forth about where to go, and, of course, the ever-torturesome pre-date debate: what to wear. Throw in the ongoing health crisis and the fact that you may be having your first date via FaceTime or Zoom, and the stress is very, very real.

Luckily, Hinge and Headspace want to help make all of your pesky date anxiety go away. The dating app and the mindfulness app have partnered on a series of meditation videos designed to make you feel calm and confident before a date.

The two guided sessions, available for free on YouTube and the Hinge website, are called "Pre-Date Meditation" and "Inner Voice Meditation." Each one clocks in at just under eight minutes and is narrated by Eve Lewis, the director of meditation at Headspace.

"It is very natural to feel nervous or even stressed about going on a date," Lewis reassures in the Pre-Date Meditation. "You are potentially meeting someone for the first time and it can feel really uncomfortable not knowing how it will go." Lewis explains that the tendency to imagine different scenarios of what might happen - though a tempting thought-process - takes you out of the present moment. This meditation session focuses on the body scan technique, in which you pay close attention to different parts of your body from head-to-toe, grounding yourself firmly in the present.

The Inner Voice meditation is intended to help you identify negative thoughts and quiet uncertainty. Lewis talks through the noting technique of labeling any distractions during the meditation as either thoughts or feelings.

Lady Gaga's New Song Might be a Little Cheesy, but It's Her Most Important One Yet

Lady Gaga is one of the many celebrities dedicating their platforms to imploring fans to vote in the upcoming election. In her latest Instagram post on Oct. 15, the "Rain On Me" singer did what she does best and adorably performed a slightly corny yet very important song about voting. Gaga's latest tune provides a crucial reminder to register to vote for those who have yet to do so and encourages fans to visit TurboVote.org if they need additional help with voter registration or voting by mail.

"They'll help you register / Inform you how to vote / Help tell you where to go / I know some of you still don't know," she hilariously sang. As she said herself, the catchy tune is admittedly a little cheesy, but certainly vocalizes a major message. With less than a month left until Election Day, voter registration deadlines are approaching in many states (and it's already passed in others), so if you have yet to register, allow Gaga's words to urge you to do so ASAP.

If you're all set to vote and planning on heading to the polls, the single also reminds you to know exactly where you need to go and what to bring. Particularly, if you're a first-time voter or voting in a new state, the process can be confusing, so it's always a good idea to be prepared. Take Gaga's advice and make sure to cast your vote: "Don't give up . . . it's important your voice is heard!" Listen to the full song above.
