This Facebook Post About Being a Female Veteran Is Going Viral For the Right Reason
Update: Rebecca Landis Hayes posted an apology note she received from the person who originally left the note on her car. "I know it's no excuse, but I've seen so many young people park in retired vet's places, along with handicap lately, and I lost my cool," the person wrote. ". . .I appreciate your service to this country and I highly respect military men and women." You can read Hayes' Facebook post, along with the note and original story below.
Original story: Here's another reason you shouldn't be quick to judge or write scandalous notes to people. One woman came back to her car only to find a note that accused her of taking a parking spot for veterans - except the note writer didn't realize the woman is a veteran.
Rebecca Landis Hayes went to the Coddle Creek Harris Teeter in Concord, NC, and parked in a veteran parking space. When she got back, she found a note telling her "This parking is for veterans, lady. Learn to read and have some respect." Hayes then wrote a Facebook post where she states she served in the US Navy for eight years. The note goes on to mention that she's sorry that "your narrow misogynistic world view can't conceive of the fact that there are female Veterans. I'm sorry that I have to explain myself to people like you." She ends her post with a simple question: "I served, did you?" The full post is below.
Hayes's post has more than 6,000 shares and 94 comments, with many thanking her for serving in the Navy. She's since written another Facebook post about how "overwhelmed" she feels about all the comments she's received and reminding everyone that "there is no ONE veteran type." This is just another clear example of why sometimes, it's better to ask questions before jumping to a conclusion.
