Disney Created a Room That Can Charge Any Gadget - Without a Single Wire
Disney isn't just tinkering away at creating Star Wars Land and bringing you one-of-a-kind experiences on cruises. The latest invention from Disney Research is a gadget that can charge your phone wirelessly - without a single wire or additional product.
The three-person team composed of Disney researchers Matthew Chabalko, Mohsen Shahmohammadi, and Alanson Sample created a room that can seamlessly charge any device - and deliver power to TVs or other products that normally need to be plugged in. To begin, the team built a room with aluminum panel walls, floor, and ceiling. In the middle of the room, a large copper pipe sits with capacitors (that regulate the electromagnetic frequency) to create an electromagnetic field. With these structures, electricity can continuously run through the loop, creating a "magnetic field" that can "deliver kilowatts of power," otherwise known as quasistatic cavity resonance (QSCR). Essentially, this technology lets you enter the room and, without doing a single thing, your phone will automatically start charging.
With a room like this, you can decorate it however you want but still be able to charge wirelessly. You can learn more about QSCR in the video below, or read the team's findings in a paper submitted to the journal PLOS One.
