The Story Behind 1 Little Boy's "Free Toy Stand" Is Too Sweet to Miss
When Melissa Work's 6-year-old boy walked into her room after he was supposed to be in bed the Florida mom tried to keep calm. The child wanted to talk, so instead of getting frustrated, she kept in mind the mantra of "If you don't listen to the little things, they'll never tell you the big things." Blake crawled into bed and they chatted for a few minutes before Melissa mentioned that he needed to clean his room in the morning.
According to Melissa, Blake responded, "Ugh, Mom. But that's a lot of mess. That's a lot of toys to pick up."
"I then explained to him that all of those toys were blessings. That there were many kids out there who didn't have that many toys and some had none," Melissa wrote on Bored Panda. "His face dropped; it hit him and that really hurt his heart. He told me that hurt his 'heartbeat' and then says, 'Wait. I have an idea.'"
Blake suggested creating something like a lemonade stand where he can give away his toys to kids in need. "I told him we would discuss it in the morning, but that I loved his huge heart" Melissa explained. As soon as Blake woke up the next morning, the child was ready to get to work and insisted that Melissa help - before she even had a chance to pour a cup of coffee.
When Melissa told Blake that the first step was to gather toys that he was willing to part with, she learned that this was already taken care of. "There in the kitchen were eight of his toys and a few books. Some were his favorite toys," Melissa wrote. "I walked out there, looked at them and my eyes watered. He really wanted to do this. It was the first thing on his heart that morning."
Although they live in an older community with no kids or traffic, Melissa didn't have the heart to tell Blake that people most likely weren't going to stop by. Instead, she helped him get to work on the sign. "I asked him what he wanted it to say and with the biggest smile, he told me, 'Cheer up kids!!! Come to Blake Work's house! We have free toys for you!!'" Melissa wrote. "He was smiling from ear to ear and it meant everything to him. As he drew the little hearts, I knew that his heart truly was just exploding to do this."
They set up the stand in their driveway and when nobody showed up, Blake asked his mom to "text all kids" as her heart broke over his disappointment. Melissa desperately posted on Facebook and after six hours of refusing to leave his post, Blake had given away all of his prized positions.
This is Blake. This is his heart. He's a humanitarian. He hurts deeply when others hurt. He's the first to give and the last to take. He will make sure everyone else in the room has what he was just given. It's just simply, him. He thanks me for cleaning the house. Begs his Gigi and Papa to bring along his little sister on a date that he has earned with good behavior, just so she is not left out. He will open the door for you and wish you a good day. He's just something special. We teach him that kindness can make a difference. That it can change the world. That we should love one another, care for one another, and be kind to one another. That day I cried more tears than I have in a long time. He convicted me. He inspired me. He made us proud. This day was just another day for him, it just happened to have gotten more attention.
