We Tried the Oreo Beer Everyone's Talking About, and This Is What Happened

After we picked our jaws up off the floor after learning about Oreo beer, our first reaction was to seek it out and try it for ourselves. Would it taste like actual Oreos?! We anticipated that it would, since the beer is made from actual Oreos. "We took our 7 percent robust chocolate milk stout Hornswoggler and conditioned it on hundreds of pounds of Oreo cookies. If you like Oreo cookies, this is a must try," The Veil Brewing Company of Richmond, VA, said in an Instagram post about its cookie-filled creation.
So, like the Oreo fanatics that we are, the POPSUGAR Food editors grabbed a package of Double Stuf Oreos and poured ourselves a glass of the Hornswoggler Oreo Stout, crossing our fingers that the two would taste nearly identical. Getting tipsy from drinking liquified Oreos is the dream, right? We took our first sip, and a few of us simultaneously had one reaction: "Coffee!" The dark beer has an intensely strong espresso flavor, and it's similar to a bitter coffee stout. What we weren't getting was the chocolaty note or, more importantly, the presence of Oreos. We did get a slight hint of Oreos and vanilla in the scent of the beer, though. It's entirely possible we didn't get as much of an Oreo-forward flavor because the beer was shipped to us and therefore was not consumed immediately. "We suggest consuming this beer as fresh as possible for the most intense Oreo character possible," the brewery explained in its Instagram photo.
That's not to say that we were disappointed by the beer. If you're a stout drinker, you'll undoubtedly appreciate the robustness of this beer and enjoy its rich, smooth flavor and mocha-like aftertaste. However, you'll have to wait until Veil decides to brew another batch if you want to get a taste. The cans are now sold out and the brewery only had the beer on tap for a limited time. But not to worry. If you're like us, you'll just stick to the obvious solution: eating Double Stuf Oreos with the beer (or wine) of your choice.
