Why 1 Student's Project Showcasing the Power of Breast Milk Is Going Viral
There's a difference between hearing that breast milk is good for babies and actually being able to see it. Thanks to one student who managed to capture this visual proof, now we can see it - and her photo is going viral for all of the right reasons.
Vicky Greene is a first-year biosciences student and her recent work gives parents a unique view at how the antibodies found in breast milk actually help their little ones fight off infection. For her microbiology project, Vicky had nine petri dishes containing the bacteria M. Luteus. She then added a disk soaked in breast milk to the center of each dish. This milk came from two different nursing moms - the samples labeled BmA are from a mom who's breastfeeding a 15-month-old and the samples marked BmB are from a mom who's nursing a 3-year-old.
The power of both moms' breast milk is easy to see in this incredible photo. "See the clear bit around the discs - that's where the proteins in the milk have killed off the bacteria!" Vicky captioned her photo on Facebook. "It also worked with E. coli and had a fairly good go at MRSA too . . . the future is bright, the future is breast milk."
