Why Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Be Making History If He Wins an Oscar
On Jan. 24, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year's highly anticipated nominations. Among the nominees was Lin-Manuel Miranda, who scored the nod in the best original song category for his song "How Far I'll Go" from Disney's Moana.
The Hamilton creator collaborated with fellow songwriters Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina for the Moana soundtrack, which includes songs both in English and Tokelauan, a Polynesian language. The song that's up for a nomination was performed by Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced the movie's title character, in addition to Alessia Cara, who sang a version that plays during the end credits.
If Lin-Manuel wins the Oscar on Feb. 26, he will officially become an esteemed EGOT winner. Let's break it down: he has an Emmy Award for outstanding original music and lyrics for his opening performance at the 67th Tony Awards, three Tony Awards for Hamilton and In the Heights, and two Grammy Awards for the respective Hamilton and In the Heights studio albums.
Not only would the win grant him EGOT status, but it would also make the 37-year-old multihyphenate the youngest person to receive the honor. (Robert Lopez currently holds that title after he won an Oscar for Frozen in 2014 when he was 39.) Not only that, but Lin-Manuel would be the fastest person to do it! He won his first Tony Award in 2008, so that means he would have achieved his big EGOT win in just nine years.
Following the big announcement, Lin-Manuel took to Twitter to share his thoughts. While his first tweet just included a stunned emoji, he later responded to radio personality Lin Brehmer, who pointed out that Lin-Manuel would technically reach GEMPOT status since he is also a Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur Genius Grant winner.
@LinBrehmer Hey Lin, Lin here. Unlike your beloved Cubbies, I have no control over the outcome, but GEMPOT is a great acronym. Cheers!

While it would be so exciting to see Lin-Manuel make history, he's in a tough category that also includes two songs from the wildly popular La La Land. We'll all have to just tune in on Feb. 26.
