Deadpool 2: Michael Shannon Is the Frontrunner to Play Cable
Before we even knew Deadpool was officially getting a sequel, we already had a strong inkling that one new face would definitely show up: Cable. The tip traces all the way back to the original film's postcredits scene, which hilariously pays homage to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In it, Deadpool confirms that Cable would join for round two. Cable, if you don't know, is the son of Jean Grey's clone and Cyclops, both from the X-Men franchise. The question, of course, becomes, who would play the badass Marvel character? Well, there's a new frontrunner in town: Michael Shannon. But before we get to that, let's review what has transpired in the past few weeks.
Near the end of February, the creator of the Deadpool comic books (Robert Liefeld) basically revealed his dream casting for the role: Russell Crowe. Instead of just putting the wish out there in the Twitter ether, though, he actually tweeted at Crowe. And the best part is, Crowe not only responded, but seemed to warm up pretty quickly to the idea. Let's go over the full, delicious timeline of the weirdest superhero movie casting process you've ever seen.
1. Liefeld Basically Asks Russell Crowe to Sign On For the Role
@russellcrowe you should read for #Cable in Deadpool and X-Force. Just sayin...

On a late Thursday night, Liefeld tweeted to Russell Crowe out of nowhere and said he should read for the character. The next morning, Crowe responded in a way only an Oscar winner could: "I should read for it?" This roughly translates to, "I don't audition for roles. They're offered to me." Which is, well, pretty fair. Liefeld wrote back almost immediately, saying, "huge fan sir. Poorly worded. Apologies." Then, Crowe dragged Ryan Reynolds into it and basically said he'd consider it.
I'm sure if @VancityReynolds has any interest in that idea he'll find a way https://t.co/KFUC6fIxjS

While Reynolds has yet to respond, Liefeld apologized again, sent over a photoshopped image of Crowe as Cable, and called it "an absolutely irresistible notion."
2. Liefeld Tweets a Hilarious Aside After the Whole Exchange
Note to self, don't caffeine tweet @russellcrowe before nodding off to sleep.

After all that back and forth, Liefeld once again called out his own lack of tact when approaching Russell Crowe.
3. Russell Crowe Personally Feeds the Fire
Hmmm... @robertliefeld thoughts? https://t.co/l7MpN0JQGp

A few days later, Crowe initiated a little conversation of his own. The actor retweeted some fan art depicting him as Cable and asked Liefeld to weigh in. He responded almost immediately, saying, "Freaking AWESOME sir!!"
4.Liefeld Reaches Out Again
Figured you'd love this one @russellcrowe https://t.co/ZdYIpKpN9r

Recently, Liefeld sent another piece of fan art to Crowe. Although he didn't respond directly, he did retweet another piece of fan art from the same artist, and he also retweeted this poll asking if Crowe would be a good fit for the role.
On March 22, The Hollywood Reported exclusively revealed that Michael Shannon is the frontrunner to play Cable. "Sources say that Shannon isn't the only one on the studio's list but is leading the pack as the top choice at this stage," said THR. "Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also on the shortlist. Kyle Chandler's name surfaced last Summer but sources say he was never in contention for the role."
We'll have to wait for official confirmation!
