Hero Bus Driver Rescues 5-Year-Old Boy Wandering the Streets at Night
After midnight in the early hours of Jan. 29, Denise Wilson was rounding a corner on her city bus route when she spotted a young boy wandering the street dressed in short pajamas and socks. The Milwaukee County Transit System bus driver pulled over in the under-31-degree weather, and the rest of her heroic action was caught on the bus's surveillance recording.
"It's after midnight, so I'm just like, 'Am I really seeing what I'm seeing?'" Denise told WISN-TV. "He came out of nowhere. I just happened to look over and heard him crying."
In the video footage, Denise can be seen carrying the 5-year-old boy onto the bus and putting him down so he could go sit. Later, you can hear her ask him if he's OK and if he's still cold, followed by her grabbing her own jacket and wrapping the boy in it. She sat with the boy, gave him a snack, and called the police, whose report said that the boy was reunited with his family that night and it was determined he "left the house by mistake."
"I'm happy I made that stop . . . " Denise said. "A lot of times we try to do what's right when we see something happening, and if we're there to help and have the ability or means to do it, that's what we're supposed to do, so I don't look at it as being a hero - just being there to help."
