Warning: Balenciaga's New Couture Gowns Are Heavy Duty

It was a long walk for the models at Balenciaga, who carried their oversize handbags and packed totes across a ginormous room, the floor printed with the brand's name in big block letters. Demna Gvasalia was celebrating Balenciaga's 100th anniversary, and that called for couture gowns only he could dream up: bunched black tulle that looked like a tower of car tires and one strapless bodyconscious number that was simple, save for the tremendous bow affixed to the front, doubling as a hand muffler for the model.

As for the more wearable, everyday items, there were plenty. But it's the way these clothes are worn that make them wonderfully inventive and even a little bit uncomfortable - that has become Demna's signature. Cocoon coats in plaid and fur are buttoned across the body at the tip of the shoulder, so the outfit appears unbalanced and pencil skirts are folded at the waist before they're belted.

This season, plenty of chunky jewels, silk scarves, and floral minis come into play, and ladies are doubling up on mid-size satchels, a new runway trend that's been Demna approved. Finally, his car mat skirts in leather and neoprene will be must-haves. Pair them with a vintage T-shirt, candy-colored tights, and the new Balenciaga material pumps, and that's automatic street style.
