Why 1 Dad Wants to Be the "Umbrella" in His Daughter's Life
Although Nevaeh Sotelo is only in high school, this teen from Texas has already lived one of the hardest days of her life: coming out.
Before the 15-year-old told her family that she was lesbian, she didn't know how her family would react, but quickly learned that her dad will always be one of her biggest supporters, her news didn't change that. Although it's been over a year since Nev shared her sexuality with her dad, Robert recently surprised her with an incredible gesture to reaffirm his unwavering love.
The proud father bought his daughter a rainbow umbrella, which was fitting not only because it says, "Be you, be true, be awesome," or because of it's meaningful colors. "I bought it for her because I know at her age it's hard to be accepted in this cruel world we live in and not one moment do I want my daughter to forget that her dad loves her no matter what," Robert told Buzzfeed. "I want her to know on those stormy and rainy days as she's holding up that umbrella that I am there to protect her just like the umbrella is there to protect her from the rain."
According to her dad, he instantly knew that he needed to buy this umbrella for Nev because it "represents who my daughter is: a kind and loving individual who expresses herself no matter who is looking and because she is aware of who she is, and so am I."
While Nev doesn't take for granted how her dad works to show her his love each and everyday "with small gestures like these," she just wishes that other kids had the same acceptance and support from their parents. "My dad is a strong believer in equality, as am I," Nev said. "He knows that everyone should be treated with the same respect no matter your gender, sexuality, race, or anything in between."
