9-Year-Old Saves Mom's Life Thanks to Simple Lesson He Learned in Health

When 9-year-old Camdyn heard his mom say she was having chest pain, the little boy knew exactly what to do: call 911. If it weren't for a simple lesson he learned in health class, his mom, Kimberly Smith, might not be here today.

On March 2, Smith woke up with pain in her chest, heavy limbs, and shortness of breath, and though she knew something felt wrong, she continued to power through her day of caring for her 4-week-old son and two older boys. The single mom was preparing to take a nap and hopefully sleep off what she thought could be pneumonia when Camdyn got home from school and saw her clutching at her chest.

Camdyn knew to be more concerned for his mom than Smith had allowed herself to be. "My health teacher said if someone grabs their chest like that, I should call 911," he told her. "I'm going to get my shoes on. We need to get to a hospital."

Following a call to her doctor to outline her symptoms, an ambulance was called and Camdyn rode with his mom the whole way to the hospital, chatting with the paramedics. At the hospital, Smith was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms - multiple blot clots in the lungs - which, according to a blood test, were a result of genetic predisposition, but also a likely result of the C-section she'd had four weeks previous.

"I never thought I'd be here," Smith wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help with her medical expenses. "I really want to spread awareness about blood clots. It was the single most scary thing I've gone through. The thought of not being with my children is heart wrenching! My intention was to not ask for any help at all and to really stress to others to be aware of what their body is saying! Truth is I am a single mom and could use a bit of help, but not real good at asking for that!"

And as for Camdyn? The little boy is rightfully being hailed as a hero for knowing what to do and remaining calm for his mom under pressure. "My son, who said, 'I don't feel like a hero,' now really does feel like one and he loves reading all the nice words being said!"
