Ellen DeGeneres Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Her Coming Out Episode

Ellen DeGeneres has a lot to celebrate right now, as this week marks the 20th anniversary of the coming out episode on her sitcom Ellen. In a hilarious and touching speech to her audience on Friday, the host talked about her controversial decision to come out as gay on national television. "This was before Facebook, so if you wanted to announce something, it was the only way . . . you had to get a sitcom," she joked. "I thought this was important to celebrate the anniversary to remember what it was like back then and appreciate how far we have come." She then sat down with Oprah Winfrey and her former Ellen costar, Laura Dern, who remembered just how special the moment was when Ellen said the words "I'm gay" out loud for the first time.
