How Do You Respond to a Homophobic Slur? 1 State Lawmaker Just Called the Troll's Grandma
If someone trolling you lists a phone number on their profile, it makes perfect sense to call the number and confront them. That's exactly what Pennsylvania state congressman, Brian Sims did, except he didn't speak to the troll over the phone; Sims ended up speaking to his grandmother.
It all began when a man named David (Sims censored his last name on the conversation's screenshot) posted not one, but two offensive slurs on his wall. Sims followed the troll's profile and found his grandmother's phone number on his page in a number of places. Sims called the grandmother and according to HuffPo, their conversation went exactly as one might anticipate.
"I explained to her exactly who I was and what he had done," Sims said to HuffPo. "Like any grandma, she was very embarrassed at having this kind of convo and very ashamed at the actions of her grandson. The conversation ended with me telling her that I wanted to hear from him."
Following their conversation, Sims shared a screenshot of the offending comment along with a message for future trolls. "Dear Bigots, posting your grandmother's telephone number all over the same page you use to post slurs on other people's pages is not going to end well for you," wrote Sims.
We'll add this tactic to the long list of ways to tackle trolls.
