Ivanka Trump's Brand Got Licensed in China the Same Day She Dined With Its President

Ivanka Trump may have stepped away from her merchandise brand, but she's still reaping the benefits of it - even though her official position is now in the White House. An Associated Press investigation revealed that Trump's brand was approved for three additional trademarks in China on April 6 - the same day she dined with China's President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago.

According to documented obtained by the AP, Trump "won provisional approval" from the Chinese government to exclusively sell her brand's jewelry, bags, and spa services. Since the inauguration, Trump's brand has already been authorized by the Chinese government for the sale of two other trademarked items.

In a statement to CNN, the new president of Trump's brand, Abigail Klem, said the trademarks were necessary to protect the company from copyright infringement which is apparently rampant. "It is our responsibility to diligently protect our trademark," she asserted.

While Trump no longer manages the brand, she still owns it and stands to benefit from the approval. It's unclear how her new business will pan out legally, but she has denied any involvement in the process.


According to her attorney Jamie Gorelick, Trump has not broken any federal conflict of interest laws. "The federal ethics rules do not require you to recuse from any matter concerning a foreign country just because a business that you have an ownership interest in has a trademark application pending there," Gorelick's statement read.

The Ivanka Trump brand is not the only family business to receive favorable approval internationally since the inauguration: the Trump Organization was granted 35 trademarks for construction and mining in China at the beginning of March.
