Serena Williams Slams Tennis Player For Making Racist Comments About Her Baby
Right now should be pure bliss for Serena Williams. Not only is she the best tennis player in the world (NBD) and enjoying a lavish vacation with fiancé Alexis Ohanian, but she's also pregnant with her first child. Unfortunately, because the world is garbage, she was forced to address a racist comment made about her baby by a fellow tennis player via Instagram on Monday:
It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers.
I have said it once and I'll say it again, this world has come so far but yet we have so much further to go. Yes, we have broken down so many barriers- however there are a plethora more to go. This or anything else will not stop me from pouring love, light and positivity into everything that I do. I will continue to take a lead and stand up for what's right.
I am not afraid unlike you. You see, I am no coward. "Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? You may shoot me with your words… you may try to kill me with your hatefulness, but still like air, I rise."
I humbly thank the ITF for any consideration given to all the facts in this case. They will have my full support.
Serena
Serena, who quoted Maya Angelou's famous poem "Still I Rise," was referring to the comments made by Ilie Nastase. When the former world No. 1 - who earned the nickname "Nasty" for his poor sportsmanship back in the '70s - was recently asked about Serena's baby at a press conference for the Fed Cup, he reportedly replied, "Let's see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?" After hearing about Serena's reaction to his statement, he accused the media of trying to drum up scandal. "Anything I say, I am the bad boy," he told the Associated Press, before denying to Romanian website news.ro he said anything racist. "If I said she would have an ugly, black [baby], that would have been racist."
Ilie also found himself in hot water over the weekend after verbally abusing British player Johanna Konta and British captain Anne Keothavong, as well as the chair umpire, during some Fed Cup matches, which is why Serena cited the "sexist comments against my peers" in her post. His outburst got him ejected from the tournament and suspended by the International Tennis Federation, which is currently investigating the comments he made.
