The Crushing Story Behind Ed Sheeran's "Small Bump" Song
Much like his friend Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran is known for writing songs about his real-life relationships and experiences. While some are more obvious nods to the people in his life ("Perfect" is about girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, "Supermarket Flowers" is about losing his grandmother from his mom's perspective), others are a bit more complicated. Sheeran's "Small Bump," which is off his 2011 + album, is one of those songs.
The haunting lyrics - which include lines like "You're just a small bump unborn just for four months then torn from life / Maybe you were needed up there but we're still unaware of why" - tell the story of an unborn baby who dies in the mother's womb. Sheeran wrote it about his friend who suffered a miscarriage while she was five months pregnant, telling Interview magazine in 2011: "Yeah . . . it was quite a difficult subject to tackle. I wrote it from their perspective. It was my perspective looking on them to begin with. It's quite a touchy subject, so I wrote it from the perspective of actually being the parent." So touching.
