The Seriously Concerning Reason Frozen Hash Browns Have Been Recalled
Two kinds of frozen hash browns have been recalled for a seriously bizarre reason: they could contain pieces of golf balls. Yep, you read that right. Both the Roundy's brand and Harris Teeter brand of frozen Southern-style hash browns were recalled because of possible golf ball contamination, or "extraneous golf ball materials," as McCain Foods noted in its recall statement. The affected products are as follows.
- Roundy's brand, 2 lb. bag of frozen Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 001115055019)
- Harris Teeter brand, 2 lb. bag of frozen Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 007203649020)
Elaborating on the recall, the company claimed, "McCain Foods USA, Inc. announced today it is voluntarily recalling retail, frozen hash brown products that may be contaminated with extraneous golf ball materials, that despite our stringent supply standards may have been inadvertently harvested with potatoes used to make this product. Consumption of these products may pose a choking hazard or other physical injury to the mouth."

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my frozen hash browns extra crispy and with no chopped golf balls. While no injuries have been reported, McCain Foods urges consumers not to eat the hash browns if they have them and instead to return them to the store or throw them away. If frozen hash browns are a staple in your breakfast routine, however, we'd recommend going with one of our favorites, the Trader Joe's frozen hash browns.
