The Spaghetti Doughnut Might Be Worth It For the Instagram - but Not For Eating
I had really high hopes for the spaghetti doughnuts at Smorgasburg. It's a fun concept involving my favorite food group: pasta. I love the idea of my pasta being handheld so I can eat it while I browse the rest of Brooklyn's foodie festival, which is definitely what I did after taking photos; however, the grab-and-go dish didn't quite deliver in terms of taste.
I tried two of Pop Pasta's spaghetti doughnut options at Smorgasburg, the red sauce one and the mac and cheese one. Each doughnut is a decent amount of pasta to make a hearty snack, which makes the $5 price point completely tolerable. I tried the mac and cheese one first, and it was only OK. It definitely tasted like mac and cheese, if you made the mac and cheese last night, threw it in the fridge, and then reheated it in the oven today. Honestly, I don't hate that concept, but I don't love it either. The red sauce doughnut, which is what you'd consider traditional spaghetti to be, also had a leftover-pasta vibe to it. It was also a bit on the dry side.
Overall, I think there are better dishes at Smorgasburg to try, like several of the dessert options, but I understand the hype around the spaghetti doughnut. Judging by how many New Yorkers have it all over their Instagrams, it seems like this foodie trend is a hit.
