The United Passenger Lost 2 Teeth and Had a Concussion and a Broken Nose
An attorney for Dr. David Dao, the passenger forcibly removed from a United flight, said at a press conference that there will "probably" be a lawsuit. The attorney, Thomas Demetrio, also stated that Dao suffered a broken nose, a concussion, and two broken teeth.
In the press conference, Demetrio made several statements concerning how airlines treat passengers. "For a long time, airlines, United in particular, have bullied us," said Demetrio. "They have treated us less than maybe we deserve. I've concluded that based upon hundreds of tales of woe, of mistreatment, by United, is that, here's what we want as a society. We want fairness in how people treat us; we want respect and we want dignity."
Dao's attorneys filed a "petition" on Wednesday to keep intact all evidence of the flight. Demetrio also made it a point to not completely absolve the city of Chicago from the case. "Just because United is responsible doesn't mean the city of Chicago isn't responsible," said Demetrio.
Demetrio also mentioned United's apology to Dao. "I thought it was staged," he said. However, he did say the family accepts the public apology, but that no one from the company has actually reached out to Dao. United says it has tried to contact the family.
One of Dao's daughters, Crystal Dao Pepper, also appeared at the press conference to speak about her father. "My dad is a wonderful father," she said. "He has raised with my mother five great children who have gone on to do great things." She also hopes that nothing like this ever happens again. "What happened to my dad should have never happened to any human being, regardless of the circumstance," said Pepper.
Photos of people cutting up their United credit cards have gone viral on Twitter. It also appears that the flight in question was not overbooked, just full. A spokeswoman for United told The New York Times that it was simply that four employees who were needed on a flight in Louisville the next day had to be on the flight from Chicago to Louisville or else it would cause the other flight to be canceled. United, do better.
