Yes, a Protester Actually Tried to Hand the Portland Mayor a Pepsi
When the Portland, OR, city council convened on April 5, they probably didn't expect a protester to come "armed" with a Pepsi. However, that's exactly what happened.
The protester, who reportedly said his name was Carlos Enrique and that he used to formerly work at the Boston Herald, first spoke to Mayor Ted Wheeler. Enrique questioned how Mayor Wheeler could sign ordinances despite numerous protesters coming to the meetings. "It made me kind of wonder like how could someone just endure people people coming and berating you every week and everyone gets mad and you say I'm signing the ordinance anyway," he said. He went on to say, "What I realize is that the language of resistance has not been properly translated to you." Enrique then gets up, approaches the mayor, and hands him a Pepsi. Security rushes and takes Enrique away - but not before he opens up another Pepsi.
Sound familiar? It looks like the protester was trying to make a point about Pepsi's controversial commercial with Kendall Jenner that aired earlier this week. In it, Jenner hands cops Pepsi as a peaceful gesture. The video quickly drew anger from the internet and even Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter, Bernice King, for attempting to capitalize on a social justice movement. The commercial was pulled within a day and Pepsi apologized for the ad.
According to the Huffington Post, Enrique, or whoever this man is, did not work at the Boston Herald. You can watch the entire ordeal above, starting at 2:50:54. It's unclear who this man really is, but he definitely made a point that Pepsi cans don't solve anything.
