All in Favor of a Missy Elliott Statue Replacing a Confederate One, Say "Aye!"
One diehard Missy Elliott fan has come up with a perfect solution for getting rid of a Confederate statue in Portsmouth, VA. Nathan Coflin recently created a petition on Change.org advocating for the Supa Dupa Fly rapper to be considered as a replacement for the Confederate monument in Elliott's hometown.
"Who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award winning rapper, dancer, and record producer Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott?," Coflin wrote in his petition. The loyal fan also cited Missy Elliott's humble rise to superstardom as one of the reasons Elliott is deserving of a statue.
"[As] the only child of a power company dispatcher and a welder at Portsmouth's lauded naval shipyard, [Missy] rose to become a platinum recording artist with over 30-million albums sold," Coflin stated. "All this without even once owning a slave." Hard to argue with that, am I right?
The petition already has more than 13,000 signatures, and it's clear that fans are really into this idea. "Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it," Coflin concluded. Now excuse us while we add our names to the growing list of supporters for this switch to happen.
