This Man Stood on the Same Corner For 3 Years - Then a Neighbor Stepped In
Meet Ginger Sprouse and Victor Hubbard. Ginger passed Victor on the same corner for three years - and the story of how they finally connected is touching people across the world. Victor Hubbard had been battling mental illness and was sadly waiting for years for his mom to come back for him on that exact corner - until Sprouse opened her car window and her heart for Hubbard.
In December, Sprouse created a Facebook page called This Is Victor, where she would share Hubbard's story and updates on his new life. "I listen to people talking around town and keep hearing 'someone needs to do something about that guy,'" she wrote in a post. "So, I will be the organizer and I hope that we as a community can be 'someone' together."
Sprouse has led the efforts, taking care of Hubbard's doctor's appointments, giving him a place to wash his clothes, and welcoming him into her home. It's her incredible compassion and Hubbard's determination and spirit that have caught the attention of thousands of people.
A few days after starting the Facebook account, Sprouse started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Hubbard, "a sweet, gentle man that happens to be mentally ill." In two short months, the $15,000 goal was met and over $19,000 has been raised for him. "If you want to meet someone who is eternally optimistic, positive and humble go visit him," Ginger wrote. "He will out-bless you every time."
Hubbard's life has changed in more ways than they both could've imagined. He now has a job as a cook at Art of the Meal, a kitchen for cooking classes and private parties owned by Sprouse, and he's reunited with family members. Hubbard connected with an uncle also from Texas, and most importantly, he was able to get together with his mom last week.
Hubbard has recognized all the outstanding ways in which his life has been changed. "She came around and she kind of saved me," he told KHOU, a Houston news station. "She helped me. It's like grace."
