This Politician Just Equated Same-Sex Couples to "Affectionate Friends," and We Can't Stop Shaking Our Heads

Kevin Andrews is a liberal Australian politician, and his recent comments about same-sex marriage have left a lot of people insulted and very confused. Andrews recently appeared on Australia's Sky News, where the former minister compared same-sex relationships to those he shares with his "cycling mates." Andrews has not been shy about his opposition of same-sex marriage, but the comparison between these relationships and those he shares with his friends is just not comparable.

"Yes, there are all sorts of affectionate relationships," he said, as seen in the video above. "I have an affectionate relationship with my cycling mates who we go cycling on the weekends, but that's not marriage. Why doesn't the law have a place in those sort of relationships? It doesn't because the law has a place traditionally, historically, across cultures and civilizations because it's there about the protection of the vulnerable and it shouldn't go beyond that."

The host of the show made sure he understood what Andrews was saying, reminding him that these aren't people who hang out on the weekends or are friends, "these are people who are going to get married, this is a lifelong commitment."

Andrews responded, "Yeah, that's fine, and I have commitments to friends. I have affectionate relationships with friends as well. The question here is, what is the role of the law?"

As if this couldn't be more insulting, the hosts of the show brought up Andrews's colleague Tim Wilson, and Wilson's desire to marry his partner - who "isn't his friend" - despite it not being legal, but Andrews did not oblige. He said, "I hope he is his friend, as well as his partner, if you understand what I'm saying."
