These Cruise Lines Are Sending Ships to Help Hurricane Irma Victims

In light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, several cruise lines are doing something major to help rescue victims of the storm. Royal Caribbean announced Sunday that it would be "mobilizing ships and supplies" in order to send aid to those in need.

"In coordination with the US and local governments, we are dispatching ships to St. Thomas and St. Maarten and stand ready to assist Key West and other locations," Royal Caribbean said Sunday. "Adventure of the Seas made a humanitarian stop in St. Maarten on Sunday and Majesty of the Seas will make humanitarian calls in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to provide supplies and also assist in transporting evacuees in St. Maarten to safety. Additionally, we have Empress of the Seas ready to assist Key West once the impact of the storm is known."

Majesty of the Seas is built for up to 2,800 passengers and will transport evacuees to safety.

Norwegian Cruise Line also released a statement regarding its humanitarian efforts. "Acting as a responsible corporate citizen and supporting the destinations that our ships operate in is a core value of Norwegian Cruise Line. In the wake of this devastating storm, we have deployed Norwegian Sky to St. Thomas, USVI to bring much needed supplies and assist in a humanitarian effort that is currently being organized by the government," said the cruise line.

The Norwegian Sky holds up to 2,000 passengers. Another ship, Norwegian Escape, is sailing at full capacity with about 4,000 displaced guests from both ships in order to provide safety to passengers who were unable to get flights back home in time.

Because so many cruise itineraries have been canceled, there are many free ships that can be used to help victims; let's hope other cruise lines, wherever possible, can follow these examples in an effort to support rescue efforts.
