Why You Should Always Hang Up If You Get a Call About Bank Fraud

Each day it seems credit card scammers are becoming savvier than the day before, but this latest scamming trick is so clever, it will downright frighten you. A Reddit user recently shared their scary experience after receiving a phone call from their bank's fraud department.

"The call showed up on my caller ID as US Bank which is how I have it saved in my contacts," the user wrote. "He said there was a fraudulent charge from American Airlines and I was on that their website booking a flight about an hour prior to the call." Sounds legit, right? Well, what happened next is vital and just might save you from getting conned by this scam.

"For a moment I thought it was legit but then he asked for a pin #," the Reddit user shared. "Just be careful because the caller ID makes it seem real."

According to commenters on the post, the way scammers are able to do this is surprisingly simple. "Anyone can download an app and make their return number anything they want. Caller ID is never totally trustworthy," one Reddit user explained. So the next time you get a call from someone claiming to be from your bank's fraud department, it's best to hang up and call the bank directly to ensure you are speaking with a real representative and not someone trying to steal your credit card information.

Better safe than sorry, right?
