This Common Bedroom Item Can Cause Babies to Suffocate in Their Sleep
The very item you bought to keep your babies safe could actually put them at a greater risk of suffocating in their sleep, according to a warning the Food and Drug Administration released on Oct. 3. Sleep positioner pillows - which were created to make sure babies don't roll over into a dangerous position while snoozing - have actually been found to cause babies to sleep face down and suffocate.
Health officials at the FDA have advised parents to stop using sleep positioners altogether after several cases were reported of babies being put down on their backs and sides, only to be found sleeping in a life-threatening position a few hours later.
And this isn't the first warning that's been issued regarding sleep positioner pillows. The FDA released a statement back in 2010 urging parents to stop using the product immediately after 12 infants died while using the pillow. Additionally, in order to best prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, it is recommended that a baby sleeps without any extra products, including pillows, blankets, or plush toys.
