You Probably Missed This Detail About Gael García Bernal's Oscars Performance

When Coco star Gael García Bernal stepped on stage to perform at the 2018 Oscars, he sent a loud and proud message to his home country of Mexico before even opening his mouth. The actor, who voices Héctor Rivera in the touching Disney-Pixar film about the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, wore a special tie for his performance of "Remember Me." You might have missed the tie if you were distracted by the beautiful set or by Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade's impressive duet that followed Bernal's opening song, but it's an important detail: a red, white, and green ribbon bow tie modeled after the Mexican flag.
Coco is the biggest blockbuster in Mexico's history, and Bernal's tie is just one of many nods to the nation throughout Coco's Oscars presence: comedian Eugenio Derbez shouted "Viva México!" when introducing the performance, and 12-year-old Anthony Gonzalez (the voice of Miguel) ended the acceptance speech for best animated feature film with "Que viva México!"
Check out photos of Bernal's special accessory that you might have missed, then watch the creators of Coco give an emotional speech about inclusion while accepting their award.
