Ahead of the Oscars, Here Are All the Awards "Shallow" Has Already Won

Unless you've been living in a cave with no internet access, you probably already know that A Star Is Born's "Shallow" has pretty much become the breakout song of the season. Not only has it been covered by everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Alicia Keys to Lea Michele and Darren Criss (and inspired a figure skating program!), but it's also nominated for the best original song Oscar and is slated to be performed on the broadcast along with the other nominees. Although nothing is set in stone until the envelope is opened on the Oscars stage, we'd guess the odds of "Shallow" winning are pretty good, given that it's swept through award season and taken home a pretty big haul of awards so far!
At the Capri Hollywood International Film Festival in January, "Shallow" was awarded the prize for best original song; A Star Is Born also took home awards for its sound mixing and sound editing. Several critics' organizations have also recognized "Shallow" with variations on best song of the year awards. The Critics' Choice Awards presented the song with best song honors at its ceremony, where Lady Gaga was a dual winner: one for cowriting "Shallow," the other for best actress for her leading role as Ally. Meanwhile, the Detroit Film Critics Society awarded A Star Is Born with its recognition for best use of music, which includes "Shallow" as the film's signature song. "Shallow" itself was recognized by the Georgia Film Critics Association for best original song, and it won the same award from the Houston Film Critics Society.
Award season prognosticator Gold Derby holds its own awards each year, and on its 2019 list of winners, it honored "Shallow" and its songwriters Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt with the prize for best song. The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards also rewarded "Shallow" in the category of best song or recording created for a film. Similarly, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards handed top musical honors to the song, plus an award for music supervision in a film to music supervisors Julianne Jordan and Julia Michaels.
Of course, "Shallow"'s honors haven't been limited to smaller-scale award shows or film critic honors. In fact, it's been up for major prizes at some of the biggest award shows of the year - and it's done pretty well. At the Grammy Awards, "Shallow" was up for four awards, including the big two: record of the year and song of the year. Although the song didn't take home either of those awards, it did win in its other two nominated categories: best pop duo/group performance (for Gaga and costar Bradley Cooper) and best song written for visual media. This marked the first time "Shallow" was specifically recognized both for its performance and for its writing. Gaga also performed a rock-tinged arrangement of the song for the Grammys broadcast.
At the Golden Globes this year, the nomination for "Shallow" was just one of five for A Star Is Born. By the end of the night, the film had lost all of the awards it was nominated for - except this one. "Shallow" did take home the award for best original song, which seems like a good indicator of its status as the favorite heading into the Oscars!
