Say Hello to 55+ Cool New Emoji Coming Soon, Including a Sloth, an Oyster, and Garlic!

New year, new emoji! More than 55 new emoji will be hitting our Apple devices later this year, Emojipedia confirmed on Tuesday. Fun upcoming additions include an otter, a sloth, and an oyster (with a cute pearl inside, of course). Other inclusive additions include same-sex couples, an ear with a hearing aid, a deaf person, and manual and mechanical wheelchairs. There will be lots more options in the food section, too. We'll soon have a waffle, butter, falafel, a mate drink, onion, and garlic. Hate to break it to you, white wine enthusiasts, but there's still not a specific glass for you.
There are 59 approved emoji but technically a lot more when you consider the number of gender and skin-tone options. As the Emojipedia blog post explains, "Emoji 12.0 is comprised of 59 distinct new emojis; 75 when gender variations are taken into account; and 230 new emojis when all skin tone options are also included." It's only been a few months since the Apple iOS 12.1 update brought us new emoji like the llama and the bagel, but there's always more up emoji creators' sleeves.
For this newest release, which has no specific timeline yet, Apple partnered with the nonprofit organization Unicode Consortium after proposing more representative emoji in a letter last Fall. Get excited as you catch a glimpse of all the new emoji ahead.
