If You Don't Sit Through Captain Marvel's Credits, You'll Miss Something Important

Captain Marvel has finally blasted its way into theaters, which means Brie Larson can relax about inadvertently spoiling the film's many twists. But one thing everyone who's planning on seeing the movie should know is just how many postcredits scenes you should be prepared to sit through once the kickass Carol Danvers finishes punching the lights out of . . . well, basically everyone.

If you're one of the many who will likely flock to movie theaters over the next few days to catch Captain Marvel in action, then be aware that there are two - count 'em, two - extra scenes that play after the credits begin their painfully slow crawl. The first and most important scene happens relatively quickly, functioning as more of a midcredits scene. The second is much more lighthearted, but contains a special nod to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful objects, so it's not to be missed, either. Wondering what goes down in each of the postcredits scenes? We'll break it down for you below.

Warning: again, MAJOR Captain Marvel spoilers ahead, so stop reading now if you don't want to know what happens!

What Happens in Captain Marvel's First Postcredits Scene?

Not long after the first batch of credits for the film start scrolling, we find ourselves in the high-tech, top-secret lab at Avengers headquarters that we've seen in past Marvel films. There, Steve Rogers/Captain America and Natasha/Black Widow are staring in horrified shock at the screens around them, which are tallying the ever-growing number of people who disappeared around the world when Thanos completed his infamous snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. (We've seen bits and pieces of this scene in the Avengers: Endgame trailer.) "This is a nightmare," Captain America says, before Black Widow responds, "I've had better nightmares."

Then Bruce Banner strolls in, alerting the pair that the device found post-snap has stopped emitting its signal. They gather in front of the small piece of old technology, which is encased in high-tech devices of Banner's creation, no doubt trying to track where the signal is going. The device in question? The '90s-era beeper Nick Fury is able to send a message out on just before he turns to dust in the postcredits scene for Infinity War that glows with Captain Marvel's signature red, white, and gold insignia.

Obviously, having watched Captain Marvel and seen Carol Danvers personally give Fury the beeper to use in emergencies, we know where and to who the signal was going. Banner, Captain America, and Black Widow find out soon enough, too. Just as they start to fret over the fact the signal is no longer pulsing, Carol magically appears in her suit inside the lab, and asks the group, "Where is Fury?" So, yes: Captain Marvel can time travel, apparently, and will definitely be in Endgame.

What Happens in Captain Marvel's Second Postcredits Scene?

If you finish watching this movie and don't rate Goose the Not-Actually-a-Cat-but-Basically-a-Cat your favorite character, then we suggest reevaluating your life immediately. The cuddly little guy is actually a deadly breed of alien called a "flerken", but just happens to appear on earth in cat form. But whenever Goose decides his pals - Nick Fury, especially - are in trouble, he can open his mouth incredibly wide to reveal a GIANT, gaping mouth filled with tentacles and razor sharp teeth (so, not your usual house cat).

Over the course of the film, Goose drags a number of foes to their deaths and into his mouth, but he also happens to swallow something both familiar and important to fans of the MCU for safekeeping: the Tesseract. The immensely powerful, glowing blue cube is what powers the light-speed engine that Mar-Vell (Annette Bening) is working on earlier on in the film, and has popped up previously in everything from Captain America: The First Avenger to Infinity War.

Goose finally decides to release the Tesseract in the final postcredits scene, which happens after all of the credits have crawled by. In a lengthy, and hilarious, sequence, we watch as Goose climbs on top of Fury's desk (yes, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent adopts him as his own pet), and slowly coughs up the mother of all fur balls, which happens to include the Tesseract. Goose then offers up an adorable little meow, and casually saunters off. Honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better ending.
