Shrill Might Not Return For a Second Season - Here's Why

Hulu's new comedy Shrill is getting plenty of buzz for its honest, funny depiction of a plus-sized woman navigating the ups and downs of her life. The series is remarkably short, even by the standards of streaming platforms: it only runs for six episodes. With the positive reception, viewers are already wondering whether there will be a second season. Hulu hasn't made any announcement yet, but there are a few factors that would probably play into their decision.
As reported by Deadline when the series was first ordered by Hulu, Shrill is based on a standalone book. Lindy West's bestselling 2016 memoir, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, is the source material for the series. Initially, Hulu ordered the show as a limited series. Since there is only the one book for source material, and the series wraps itself up pretty well, this would seem to point to Shrill being a one-off series.
That being said, there have definitely been instances of standalone source material growing into multiseason adaptations. Big Little Lies continued on after the storyline from the book was exhausted, and it's rumored that Sharp Objects will be ordered for a second season. So it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Shrill would follow in these shows' footsteps and continue beyond its source material. West is one of the show's cowriters, so it would make things even easier to have the original author (and subject of the original memoir) on board.
What it will likely boil down to, then, is two things: whether West and her fellow writers are interested in pursuing a second season, and what Hulu's internal analytics have to say about the show's performance numbers. Like its fellow streaming platform Netflix, Hulu does not typically release much viewing data to the public, so the decision will definitely be made behind closed doors. We'll have to wait and see whether Hulu decides to take a chance on a second season of Shrill.
