This Indie Skincare Brand Wants to Change the Beauty Packaging Problem

At the heart of one up-and-coming indie brand is the goal to build a sustainable future. Kinship is a newly launched beauty company that houses its products in packaging that is just as impressive as its superstar lineup of ingredients.
Kinship uses completely recyclable bottles and jars made from postconsumer recycled plastics, paper, and cardboard. It skips the bubble wrap and plastic tape, as well, with most of its products free of any excess casings. Cofounder Alison Haljun told POPSUGAR exactly why she and Christin Powell decided to do so, and it boiled down to one thing: "It was critical to us that Kinship have a tangible impact on the planet and our global climate crisis," she said.
To source its packaging for the Kinship Supermello Hydrating Gel Cream ($22) and Kinship Insta Swipe Honey Lemon AHA Pads ($22), specifically, the brand partnered with a company in Denmark to gather ocean waste plastics. "The company's fishermen work in places like Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia, where the ocean and beaches are filled with tons of plastic," Powell explained. "They collect it. Then, the plastic gets converted into pellets and those are used to make our jars. Already this year, Kinship has eliminated 1.5 tons of plastic from our oceans, and it's just the beginning. We know there's a lot more to do."
Haljun and Powell actually allow their consumers to see exactly where these ocean-waste plastics come from. Inputting a scan of the QR code printed on the bottom of each jar to the Ocean Wastes Plastics website will get you the coordinates of where the material was sourced. "It's about traceability and thinking about the end-of-life cycle for everything we make," Powell said. "We're working toward using this material for even more of our products."
Kinship's ingredients are just as beautiful as its outer packaging, as the brand's definition of clean means nixing over 1,300 ingredients that are banned in Europe. Check out the brand's entire line of products ahead.
