This Genius Makeup Hack Compares Contouring to Wearing a Bra

When it comes to contouring, I've always been a bit cocky. "It's easy!" I'd tell my girlfriends, while painting lines on their faces: one for highlighter, followed by a swipe of blush in the middle, and bronzer on the bottom. I had no idea how badly I was missing the point. That is, until Make Up For Ever artist Lijha Stewart came into my office and blew my mind. She showed me a makeup hack - comparing contouring to a bra holding up breasts - and since then, my cheekbones have been on point.

Let's back up: Lijha was visiting, introducing me to Make Up For Ever's new Pro Sculpting palettes. These cream-color quads are offered in four shades for light, medium, tan, and dark skin and will be available in March ($45). The lightweight tin hosts a matte base color, bronzer, highlighter, and blush. It's almost impossible to mess up using these formulas since they blend so seamlessly into the skin. Lijha, however, provided me with a sculpting technique that took my skills to the next level.

In the photo above, you can see how I contoured using the techniques I am about the describe. The left side of my face (which you see on the right) is contoured while the right is not. Though the makeup application is light, it's visible how much smoother my skin looks and how much more defined my cheek is. Oh, the power of makeup! Boom.

Find Your Cheekbones

Lijha instructed to me physically feel where my cheekbones are and make sure to put the bronzer exactly there (rather than eyeball it like I usually do).

"When you're very first starting out, it's really important to explore your face shape and use your hands," she said.

I used to bring my contour line almost to my lips, but now I know that it should extend about two thirds down from my hairline towards my mouth, because that is where my bone structure actually ends. And I never went right up to my hairline - I always started about an inch in. Lijha instructed me to go right up to the hairline, because if I accidentally put too much product there, it won't matter - my mane can cover it.

Apply the Color

Drop the sponge or brush. Lijha advised to use your fingers. Tap the color on with one finger, and then use another clean one to blend it.

"You don't keep depositing color," she explained. "A huge issue when you're highlighting and contouring is that you get all of this beautiful product on, and then you don't know where to blend it, so you end up with stripes on your face or a really muddy, patchy look."

Follow the Order

Go from light to dark when it comes to contouring. "A lot of time I think people focus on the dark, but think about adding your light first because once you add your light, the natural depth in the face will come forward on their own," Lijha noted.

About That Bra Theory

The next time your significant other pokes fun at your 20-minute contouring routine, explain this sexy idea.

"My theory on contouring when you're very first starting out, you want to think of your cheek as a boob and a bra," Lijha said. "Your cheek has three different parts. It has the underwire, which is the contour and extends from the top of the ear and goes down. So where does your blush go? Right in the center of your cheek, and that's the fleshy portion of your breast, where you want the most volume."

She went on to describe the secret weapon, the highlighter, aka your cleavage. "We have all tricks when we're buying a nice push0up bra - perhaps it's getting racer back or a front clip that brings your cleavage up a notch," she said. "That's exactly what you can think of when you're using a strobing color. It's taking your cleavage, or cheekbone, to the next level and really pops that highlight. Apply it on the highest part of your cheekbone, where you want a lot of volume."

This Man Beauty Balm Will Be His New Best Friend

If you're looking for something special to give to your guy, make him an all-in-one beauty balm that will treat, well . . . almost everything! Use on dry, cracked hands or as pomade for perfect hair, and this concoction can be personalized with your man's favorite scents. Made from all-natural ingredients, the balm comes together in a matter of minutes, which makes it a great last-minute gift.

What You'll Need:

  • Small saucepan
  • 4 tablespoons beeswax
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Small heat-safe bowl
  • Kitchen towel
  • 10-20 drops essential oil
  • Spoon or wooden skewer (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda or cornstarch (optional)
  • Hand mixer (optional)
  • Small sealable container

Directions:

  1. To make the awesome beauty balm, create a homemade double boiler by placing a small saucepan filled halfway with water over medium heat. Now measure and add the beeswax and coconut oil to a small heat-proof bowl and place over the saucepan until the mixture has melted together.
  1. Carefully remove the bowl from the heat, and place on top of a folded kitchen towel. This holds the bowl in place and protects your countertop. Beeswax and coconut oil are wonderfully nurturing and great for skin and hair. To elevate the beauty balm, add a blend of essential oils, most of which are also antibacterial and antifungal. We used a combination of tea tree, cedarwood, and rosemary essential oils. Gently stir with a spoon or use a wooden skewer, which you can throw away when you're finished with the beauty balm.
  1. To add a bit of extra texture to the beauty balm, which helps exfoliate skin and hold hair in place, sprinkle one-quarter teaspoon of baking soda or cornstarch into the mixture before giving a quick blend with your hand mixer. If you don't have any on hand, the balm works just fine if you skip it.
  1. Once blended, carefully pour the beauty balm into the small sealable container, let set, and you're ready to give it to your favorite guy. We upcycled a metal tin and coated the top with chalkboard paint for a fun, finished look.

Makes four ounces of beauty balm. If stored in a cool spot, the balm is good to use until it's gone.

How to Get Victoria's Secret Bombshell Waves IRL

There's nothing more intimidating than being on a flight with 40 of the most gorgeous women on the planet - the Victoria's Secret Angels. Such was the case when I flew overseas last December with the stunning crew for the brand's annual fashion show. Obviously we can't genetically morph into these glamorous models (some of us were born shrimpy!), but what we can do is take note from their beauty books, specifically when it comes to hair.

While I was abroad, I met with GHD hair pro Lorna Moore, who was part of the official runway glam squad. She showed me how real girls can get model-inspired bombshell waves. "It's sexy, soft, touchable hair," she explained of the classic Victoria's Secret look. "It seems like you can run your hands through it, and you're not going to get stuck, 'cause there's nothing sexy about a head of hair full of hair spray. It's effortless hair. And that's what encompasses sexy hair."

To get you prepped for your hot Valentine's Day date, keep reading to discover our bombshell waves hair DIY. Then, learn two genius tricks to preserve your style.

The Standing Dirty Dog Might Be Our New Favorite Butt Exercise

First of all, how can you not love an exercise featuring the words "dirty dog" in its name? And secondly, it truly is a great butt-toning move. Since this is a standing variation, rather then being on all fours, you are going to work your core a lot more too. Bonus!

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your hands on your hips.
  • With your core engaged and a solid standing right leg, lift your left leg out to the side, keeping the left knee bent. Squeeze your waist and hip. Do not lean to the right as you lift the leg - really focus the work in your waist and hip.
  • Lower the left leg down, barely touching the ground with your left toes, then lift that leg up and repeat for a total of 15 reps.
  • Keep the leg lifted on the last rep, and make 15 small pulses in a one-inch range to concentrate the work in your glutes and obliques. Then switch sides. Do at least two sets on each side.

This Is the Coziest Way to Wear Nail Polish This Winter

As temperatures drop, all we want to do is stay inside, snuggle up in a cozy sweater, and binge-watch Netflix. Unfortunately, those aren't the most realistic goals (rent has to be paid, after all), but now our nails can speak from our truly lazy souls. Three-dimensional sweater nail art is here!

To create this look, nail artists use a dotting tool to carefully layer gel lacquer in cable-knit patterns. You can add pearls, glitter, and flocking powder to make the style look even more realistic. While the technique may be time consuming, spending that session in the salon chair is worth it! The finished manicure is supercharming and an adorable accent to any Winter look. Read on for proof.

Why I (and Everybody Else) Should Learn to Take a Compliment

I recently boarded a plane where I had a 60-second encounter I can't get out of my mind. After a few days in Southern California, I wasn't quite ready to transition back to my standard boots, scarf, and jeans that cool San Francisco temperatures require year round. I had a killer tan, wore a new short t-shirt dress, and rocked my favorite pair of camel wedges. I have to tell you: I was feeling pretty good.

As I stood in line on a silent jet bridge, the beautiful older woman with a long gray ponytail right behind me gave me a compliment I wasn't anticipating. "I have to ask: how do you work out your legs? They are gorgeous. So lean and strong." At first, I didn't flinch and felt the rush of her praise. I told her about the combination of yoga and SoulCycle I swear by and thanked her for the kind words. But 30 seconds later something strange happened. I felt a need to follow up with the following words: "You know, I think it's really just the combination of the dress and shoes. Wearing wedges helps." Her face dropped as she replied, "You don't have to do that."

Immediately, I regretted what I had said. Why didn't I just take this compliment? As I tried to figure out what had happened, this skit from Inside Amy Schumer played in my mind.

I really work hard to stay in shape, and I love my strong legs. There was no need to follow up an authentic compliment with any sort of half-hearted disclaimer, so what was so hard about receiving these words? This woman was being genuine, but some part of me felt I had to shrink after this encounter. A bunch of other people had heard our interaction, and I was consumed by the fear that I sounded self-centered.

There's a quote from Marianne Williamson I've heard at many lectures and yoga classes over the years that perfectly sums up my thoughts on what happened: "We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? . . . Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. . . . And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." These are words I do my best to live by every day, but it can be especially trying when it comes to my appearance. I have curves, and I'm muscular. My thighs touch, and I'm shaped like a "real" woman. It's been a long time coming, but I'm getting more comfortable with myself every day. Now is a more important time than ever for me to really hear these compliments. These were not empty words.

Playing small and being timid about my beauty or strength are not doing anyone any favors - especially me. Next time, I'll just take the compliment, respond with kindness and a smile, and use my long, lean, and powerful legs to walk to my seat with a little extra swagger.

The Reason Your Ab Work Isn't Showing Results

My stay at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, MX, can be summed up in two words: fitness heaven. As a guest of the award-winning retreat, every day brought a slew of new classes to try - from hiking to kettlebells, there was something for everyone. While each class had its lasting benefits, weeks later, l still find myself going back to a simple tip mentioned during the Ranch's Ab + Cycle class.

Feeling fatigued after an intense ride on our Spin bikes, the entire class seemed to be struggling with the Pilates portion of the class. There was grunting happening, people propelling themselves up with force, and more than a few necks being strained. Seeing the potential for back injuries, our instructor, trainer JayDee Cutting III, offered a simple tip that has had far-reaching effects on all of my workouts since: "Focus on the muscle, not the movement."

JayDee went on to explain that if you solely focus on mimicking a movement, the integrity of an exercise can be compromised. Instead, think about which part of the body the exercise is targeting. For instance, if you're doing a squat and find that your glutes aren't fired up, rethink your form - doing so will ensure that your quads aren't overcompensating and your butt is getting the workout it deserves. JayDee also suggests that whenever doing ab work on the floor, start the first exercise by placing your hand on the muscle being worked. As you go into the exercise, keep your hand there to make sure the muscle is being activated. If you find that it isn't, regroup, engage the muscle, and perform the exercise at a slower pace to see the difference. You'll also find that when doing ab work, it only takes a small amount of movement to engage the core; something important to consider the next time you find that you're pulling yourself up by the neck. Focus on the core, and you can let go of this idea of getting your head as far up as possible.

tHow Long Should You Wait to Work Out After Eating?

How you space out meals during the course of the day might not make a big difference in the calorie department, but it has huge implications on your workout performance. Not only can ineffectively fueling your body hinder your performance, but also, eating too much before exercise can interfere with your goals. When it comes to eating before exercise, it's all about timing.

No matter what time of day you choose to exercise, make sure to plan your workout two to three hours after your meal. Going overboard with too much food right before a workout will leave you feeling sluggish and can lead to stomach discomfort. The last thing you want is your workout habits to hinder your digestion process.

If it's been a few hours since your last meal, then most experts agree that you should eat a small snack one hour before your workout to properly fuel your body. A combination of carbs and a little protein, all under 200 calories, will do the trick. If you're not sure what constitutes a good choice, then check out these healthy pre-workout snacks for inspiration. And if you're going for an early workout session, then remember that exercising on an empty stomach - even when you first wake up - isn't ideal. It might feel tough to eat first thing in the morning, but fueling your body with proper nutrients is essential for your workout. Consider one of these light breakfast snacks you can enjoy an hour before your morning workout.

$15 For a Milkshake?! Why This Trendy Dessert Is Turning Heads

New York eatery Black Tap seems to be what every foodie's dreams are made of: over-the-top craft burgers, craft burger salads (yep), and milkshakes like you've never seen before. By the looks of its Instagram page, Black Tap goes big on everything - and we mean everything.

It's hard to choose which standout items really put this restaurant on the map, but everyone with a sweet tooth would agree hands down that Black Tap's special shakes are the star of this joint. The only caveat of these confectionary masterpieces is the $15 price point - about the same cost of the burgers. But before you shut down the idea of paying that amount, take a look at some of the most unbelievable milkshakes ahead and then let us know what you think!

You Won't Believe How Much This Swedish Woman Looks Like Adele

We had to do a double, no, triple take when we saw this photo. We're all entranced by Adele's beauty (mom hair and all), but despite the signature cat eye and telltale pouty lips, the woman you see before you is not Adele. No, that is Ellinor Hellborg, a Swedish fan of the singer.

Ellinor regularly posts pretty selfies showcasing her makeup skills on her Instagram page, but she fielded so many pleas for an Adele-inspired face that she took on the challenge. The end result is uncannny, don't you think? "I'm a huge fan of hers and hearing you all say I look like her is such a compliment!" Ellinor declared.

Seeing this gorgeous look has inspired us to test out our own Adele makeup skills - the singer's go-to style is classic, elegant, and, best of all, simple! Read on to see more proof that Ellinor is Adele's look-alike, then shop our favorite products to re-create the look at home.

You Can Have Oreos For Breakfast With This Latest Flavor

Oreo released an all-new Cinnamon Bun flavor yesterday, which features a cinnamon-flavored cookie with cinnamon-bun-flavored icing - but that's not all. Remember how insanely good Red Velvet Oreos were? They're also back by popular demand, and the good news is, they're now an ongoing offering! Thanks Oreo for making Winter just a little more bearable.
