Finally! Perfect Wine Pairings For Girl Scout Cookies

The only thing that could possibly make Girl Scout Cookies even better is a good wine pairing. And since it's officially Girl Scout Cookie season (insert praise hands emoji here), the experts at Club W have shared their suggestions. Whether you're planning a girls' night in or want to upgrade your solo movie night, you'll want to know which bottle(s) to pick up based on your cookie preference. Get ready for a match made in heaven.

Lemonades: Sauvignon Blanc

Citrusy iced lemonade cookies pair well with the tangy brightness of Sauvignon Blanc. A chilled bottle of white wine with lemony cookies on a warm day? Yes, please.

Shortbread: Grenache Blanc

What the heck is Grenache Blanc? It's a full-bodied white wine that's "about as universally delicious as a white wine can be," Club W explains. The subtle notes of vanilla complement the buttery cookie.

Samoas: Tuscan Red Blends

In other words, coconut-caramel-dark-chocolate cookies go well with red blends from Tuscany, Italy, or red blends with grapes like Syrah.

Thin Mints: Red Blends

Red wine and chocolate go together like macaroni and cheese. What complements irresistible Thin Mints best are deep, smooth red wines like berry-driven Noirs.

Tagalongs: Cabernet

Tagalongs are rich, chocolate-peanut-butter bliss, and they need a bold wine to match, and Cabernet can stand up to the layers of flavor in the soft and crunchy cookie.

The Best Way to Store Greens

If your greens are wilting within a few days of bringing them home from the store, you can prevent it with this quick storage tip. First, wash the greens thoroughly in cold water. Submerge them in bowl full of cold water at least three times before spinning them dry. Then line a resealable bag or tupperware container with a paper towel. Transfer the greens, then top them with another paper towel. Seal the bag (some air inside is OK) or pop the lid on the tupperware and store in the fridge. That's it! This technique should keep them crisp and fresh for well over a week.

In a brutal fight between police and two civilians last week in Pennsylvania, K-9 unit Aren was stabbed by a suspect and eventually died from his injuries. He was carried out of the vet clinic where he died, covered in the American flag, and placed into his partner's cruiser for his final ride.

Aren was a 5-year-old German Shepherd originally from the Czech Republic that came to Pittsburgh when he was about a year old. He was a four-year veteran of the police force and served with Port Authority Police Officer Brian O'Malley.

"It's a horrible thing. He's a member of that officer's family. He's a member of the law enforcement family," said Chief Matt Porter with Port Authority Police to CBS Pittsburgh.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers gathered to memorialize Aren in Pittsburgh. During the service Porter said, "Aren was fluent in three languages - the first being German, the second being English, and the third being 'Brian,'" speaking of Aren's partner.

Watch the video above to see Aren being honored by his fellow officers, and have a tissue handy - it's a very touching moment.

This Cop Was Just Doing His Job When He Found His Forever Friend

When Florida police officer Marcus Montgomery posted this picture on Imgur, we think his TL;DR (too long, didn't read) was spot on. He wrote, "humans suck. Leave pups on back porch in cold. He's MINE."

Officer Montgomery was called in to Panhandle Animal Welfare Society to handle some threats the shelter was getting. As he was leaving, however, he stumbled upon what would become his new forever friend. One of the shelter employees told him a litter of puppies had been dropped off the night before and left outside in near-freezing temperatures. Officer Montgomery instantly fell in love with one of them and decided his 4-year-old Pit Bull, Vader, needed a brother.

He brought Kylo Ren home as a gift to his girlfriend, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A Hands-Free Hack For Peeling Hard-Boiled Eggs

As easy as hard-boiled eggs are to make, they're a pain to peel, that is until I learned this hack. It involves shaking the egg in a glass cup with a bit of water until the eggshell breaks into a million shards. It seemed completely unfathomable until I tested it out myself and discovered it's completely legitimate! Here's how it's done.

Fill a glass cup or a mason jar with about 1/2 inch of water. Then add the egg. If you have a mason jar, screw on the lid.

Turn the cup to the side, pressing one hand over the open end so the water doesn't pour out.

Start shaking! Don't let the egg roll around the glass, but rather make sure it's hitting the sides of the glass. You'll begin to see the eggshell cracking . . .

Keep shaking until the shell slips off! Rinse the egg under cold water to remove any small shell shards, then enjoy.

I KonMari-ed the Sh*t Out of My Kitchen and Here's What Happened

I don't know when or where I first discovered Marie Kondo's first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tiding Up, but the second I saw the inviting title, I ordered it pronto. I've always struggled to keep my spaces straight - it just seemed to take too much time and require too much energy. However, after attempting the KonMari method in my own apartment and tackling the messiest thing of all, my kitchen equipment, I'm a big-time believer in the methodology.

When I moved into my San Francisco studio apartment five years ago, the kitchen bummed me out, but it wasn't a deal breaker. The cabinets and arched doorframe were original from 1928, and I tried to let that cool bit of knowledge overshadow the fact that there was no window, no oven vent, no garbage disposal, and definitely no dishwasher. I didn't ever feel inspired to cook, except for work or the occasional guest. As a result, the kitchen slumped into a random assortment of junk. I accumulated way beyond my means (I somehow ended up with five zesters and 50 kitchen towels . . . not to mention a drawer full of spare knives), and I avoided getting rid of anything! It became impossible to close cabinets unless they were fastened with rubber bands around the handles, and I always had to forcefully shove my drawers closed with my hip. And for years, I lived like this, with complete avoidance and neglect about everything.

I tackled all my clothes, books, etc., in the order presented in the book, and even though I successfully tidied up each group of items, I still felt a lot of hesitation about my kitchen. I was so embarrassingly messy - me, the food editor! And yet, the time had come, and the overflowing cabinets begged to be sorted. I started with removing the stuff on the countertop and discovered a rotten avocado just casually decomposing in my napkin holder. (Ugh, I know. Wasting avocado is a sin, and sorry for the TMI.) Instead of supporting my usual habits of tiptoeing away from the mess, I bid a sweet "thank you" to the napkin holder (and, don't laugh, the avocado too), and swiftly tossed them in the trash.

It became easier to purge as I moved along, to give away the kitchen tools that no longer served me, and to create a pile of the items I adore immensely. I let go of some of the things that had been gifted to me that I couldn't see myself ever using and focused on the items I had invested in. My VitaMix! My knife set from culinary school! My few but beloved All-Clad pans! And when it came to the food in my cupboard, I tossed the snacks and seasonings I would probably never in a million years crave while cooking. Instead, I kept the things I can never get enough of: red lentil pasta, dried mango, lemon-flavored sardines, and capers. Yeah, I know my cupboard is weird, but it most definitely "sparks joy!" (This is the main point of the book: every item you own and that takes up space in your house should simply make you feel happiness - aka "spark joy" - when you touch it).

For a good six hours on a Friday night, I scrubbed and tossed and reorganized. Then, I stepped back to take a look. I was overcome with an emotion I had never felt in my tiny apartment kitchen - excitement to cook and pride for the space I made my own. I'll have you know, I now make breakfast and dinner every night, and I never see myself wanting to return to my old habits again. My kitchen used to be a throwaway space for me in my house, but now, I find myself giddy at opening a drawer to admire and use all the tools I love.

12 Tips From Ina Garten That Will Make You a Better Cook

Ina Garten: queen of the culinary world. She's written nine cookbooks, starred in Food Network's Barefoot Contessa for over a decade, and won fans over with countless foolproof recipes. The woman knows a lot, and lucky for you and me, she's never shied away from sharing her advice. Read on for her best cooking tips. Before long, you'll be the one saying, "How easy is that?"

  1. Follow recipes to a T. When Epicurious asked her if she follows recipes when cooking at home, she said, "Exactly. To the half teaspoon. I measure everything, because I always think that if I've spent so much time making sure this recipe was exactly the way I want it, why would I want to throw things into a pot? I'm really a scientist."
  2. Respect ingredients. Simple is better, especially when cooking with fresh produce. "Buy things in season, and then only do what you need to do to make [food] taste as good as it can taste," she told Epicurious.
  3. Add coffee to chocolate. If you've ever seen Ina's recipe for brownies, you know she's a fan of enhancing the flavor of chocolate. "If you add coffee to chocolate, it gives it a depth of flavor," she said.
  4. When in doubt, add a little acidity. "Sometimes you taste something delicious, but a little hit of lemon juice or lemon zest or vinegar will just sort of wake it up," she explained.
  5. When entertaining, set out simple snacks instead of making elaborate appetizers. In an interview with IndieBound, she said, "I serve very simple nibbles like roasted cashews and good olives - nothing wrapped in phyllo. I never serve a first course, just a delicious dinner and dessert."
  6. Relaxing meals are simple meals. When asked what kind of meal she enjoys when she wants to relax, she said, "My favorite meal is a simple roast chicken with vegetables in the roasting pan.
  7. Don't be afraid to keep seasoning and tasting until your recipe is just right. When talking about her recipes with Food and Wine, she explained, "I just want something really, really flavorful, and I just keep going and going and testing things over and over again until I hear that sort of ping in my head that says, 'That's the flavor I'm looking for.' . . . I keep going until it's exactly what I'm looking for."
  8. Add salt to your microwaveable oatmeal. Ina is not ashamed to admit she eats quick-cooking oatmeal, but her tip from Bon Appétit makes all the difference: "Most people don't do their oatmeal with salt, and I think that without it, it just tastes like wallpaper paste. With salt, I think it's delicious."
  9. Riff off of your staple recipes. "I would say pick five recipes that are really simple - like roast chicken, macaroni and cheese, grilled fish - then do variations on those five recipes," Ina told Bon Appétit. If you can make macaroni and cheese, you can make lobster macaroni and cheese. . . . I think people get too complicated and spend too much time trying to impress everybody."
  10. Season your food throughout - not just at the end of - the cooking process. "It enhances the flavor of whatever you're cooking and makes food taste seasoned - not salty," she told Redbook.
  11. Think about every detail of a dinner party before it starts. Along with other hosting advice Ina gave The Kitchn, she said, "Music is the first key. Make sure there's music, so it feels like a party when people walk in the door. Put the drinks out on a bar so people can serve themselves."
  12. Make meals ahead of time as often as possible. She didn't write Make It Ahead: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook for nothing. Ina preaches the value of make-ahead recipes from a time- and stress-saving standpoint, but she also notes that some meals taste even better when they've had time to sit. "Salads like the quinoa tabbouleh with feta are better because the vinaigrette and freshly squeezed lemon juice really soak into the quinoa," she told Today Food.

Oscar-Winner Leonardo DiCaprio Is Opening the Eco-Resort of Your Dreams

If you had a mad crush on Leonardo DiCaprio in the '90s, then you probably fantasized about taking a romantic beach vacation with him (à la The Beach) more than once. Well, the romantic part probably won't happen, but starting in 2018 you can explore Leo's private beach while staying at his new eco-resort. The environmentally impassioned activist announced this month that he plans to develop his private, 100-plus-acre island off the Belizean coast - a place that he calls "heaven on earth" - into a luxury resort focused on restoring the overfished, deforested land.

"Belize is truly unique. It has the second largest coral reef system in the world, and it has some of the most biodiverse marine life, like the manatee population and almost every species of fish you can imagine. Then there are the Mayan temples and the culture," DiCaprio told The New York Times of the location, adding that he wants to change the world with the resort. "I couldn't have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren't for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement."

Dubbed "Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island," the development will contain both private homes and traditional resort villas. DiCaprio has selected Delos to head the project, which will also feature artificial reefs to shelter sea life and a seagrass nursery to nourish local manatees. In addition to a bevy of restorative features for the island itself, DiCaprio has enlisted the help of Deepak Chopra to design wellness programming for the resort's guests.

The actor and environmentalist's goal with his island development is to "create something not just environmental, but restorative," and it sounds like DiCaprio will certainly succeed.

This Instant Iced Coffee Hack Only Takes 2 Minutes

I'm an iced-coffee addict, but my clock and wallet don't always support the habit. Homemade cold-brew coffee is great, but let's be real - no one has time for that, and buying one every day isn't the way to go either. So I set out to find the solution to my caffeine needs, and this iced-coffee hack is it. You can get strong, creamy iced coffee in less than two minutes thanks to one magical ingredient - instant coffee.

I used Colombian instant coffee from Trader Joe's because that's where I shop, but you can use any ground instant coffee you can find. The recipe is beyond easy. First, heat up a couple tablespoons of water (either in the microwave, stovetop, or electric kettle) until boiling. Pour into a glass cup, then mix in a heaping spoonful of the coffee granules.

Fill the cup halfway with your creamer of choice (I used unsweetened almond milk) and a little vanilla bean simple syrup for sweetness (vanilla almond milk would work great, too). Be sure to leave enough room to top with a couple handfuls of ice.

And voilà - you're ready to walk out the door with your homemade iced coffee! This is quick and easy enough to do on busy weekday mornings or a great way to start off the weekend without having to leave your place.
